you have to remember field events are far more technical then sprint events, so sprinters will seem to be producing more consistant better performances because of this
I remember having seen the live broadcast late at night in 1968 with two school mates and we were tired and about to go to bed when Bob Beamon flew like an arrow and seemed to float through the air...it was unbelievable and is ever unforgotten. Unfortunately the clip is of too low quality to really relay the feel of the moment....
no, but it took 23 years to beat. The greatest moment now must be Bolt with 9,58 at a 100m.. will take years and years to beat, if it even is possible
I think I disagree. Bolt's 9.58 was an improvement of 1.1%. Even going back to the pre-Bolt record, it's still "only" a 1.67% improvement in 15 months. By comparison, Beamon improved the record by 6.5% in one jump--that'd be the equivalent of Bolt taking the 100m record down to about 9.13. Which puts Beamon in some perspective.
That is one way to look at things, but if an "average" Olympian came into the final of the 100m and ran 9.20 (The rough equivilant of Beamons improvement) but tailed off, would you say he only had "one good race"?
He would be one of, if not the greatest Olympian ever. There are no 1 hit wonders in Track and Field. If you can do it better, you are better. As much as i respect consistent athletes, it doesnt show up in the record books.
I was replying to someone about the olympic record. This isn´t the worldrecord anymore...but Powell didn´t beat it in the Olympics, it still stands as a championshiprecord for that competition.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
im hispanic and i know that blacks are naturally the greatest athletes why cant the ignorant aryans realize that white is out and the blacks are faster us spics cant do anything
Broad jump...now that's an elite event, and so fiercely contested at international athletics meets. Chances are that nobody has bothered trying to better Tvervaag's mark because....well, nobody wants to.
You Mex are filthy, disease-carrying Spiks who infected half the planet with your pig virus and killed loads of people around the world. Fuck you, filthy Spiks. Trying taking a shower with soap once in a while.
You're not a Spikophile, are you? Even if you are, take my advice. Don't go to Mexland. Nearly all of them Spiks carry this vile virus. They think they're got it under control. They're wrong. The virus is simply in its incubation period. When it decides to come back, it will come back with a shuddering vengeance. Stay away from Mexland and the US, and if are in the UK, stay away from anyone who looks Spik (ie. greasy hair and slitty eyes and has a lazy demeanour.)
some people don't got anything better to do thaan talk shit. i suppose ur white? it's time for another black plague i suppose. *to be racist back* just to start something haha.talking about showers...
best jump ever, considering the circimstances; one of the best ever Olympic moments. not the best long jumper, though. to break the record by as much as he did was incredible. it's like hitting 90 home runs or something. even at altitude, it was crazy.
Bob and I grew up in the South Jamaica projects. Quite a guy and quite a B-ball player then too. Tribute to a good friend who had to overcome many adversities. And tribute to coach Larry Ellis who made our successes possible ...!
You need to realize that on this jump Beamon became the first person to pass 28 feet AND 29 feet.
You can talk about the altitude and wind all you want, but no one else that day, including the defending world champion, came with two feet of Beamon's jump. No one else that day broke the previous world record.
And 40 years later it's still the 3rd longest jump ever.
The record in the long jump had been broken 13 times since 1901. The average increase was 2.5 inches, and the longest was 6 inches. Beamon broke the record by 21.75 inches and it's still an Olympic record to this day.
beamons was better because the one who broke the record before beamon's was 2ft shorter. Beamon did a jump that no one thought was humanly imaginable. Powell broke the record by only a couple of inches. What made Beamons also more astonishing is that they didnt have measuring devices prepared so obviously no one thought it was possible
Beamon's second best jump in the competition was 86 cm or nearly three feet shorter than his record jump. That was because he was pretty much in shock, and if that's what the jump did to Beamon, imagine what it did to everyone else who entered the competition thinking they might go home with the gold.
To reiterate, Mr. Beamon does still hold the "Olympic record." Not the "World" record. Bob Beamon is quoted as saying "...during that jump something popped and I knew something significant had happened because I was still flying an hour later." 8.90 meters is a LONG way to jump. The world record is 8.95 meters...which has already been mentioned as being done by Mr. Mike Powell.
you all that saying that mexico air helped lol, you all reading too much wikipedia, if it is so then how come no1 had jumped that far in new mexico again..... and that some1 else broke the record in tokyo..
Do you know about anything about the physical effects that higher altitude has on a traveling body? Since air pressure is less at higher altitudes, such as in Mexico City which is way about 5000ft, people and things can travel faster and farther than at sea level. That is why there are more home runs hit at Coors Field in Denver, CO than at any other ball park. And that is also why so many records fell by substantial amounts in Mexico City. It took 23 years before this record fell.
Although it can be harder for a person who is not acclimated to breath initially at higher altitudes, most people will become acclimated over a short period of time. Also, this was a 400m race, so it is not as physically demanding the lungs than say the middle or long distance races.
You're not a distance man, are you? They often see things differently.
Me-120y/110m was the farthest I ever ran, outside of practice, and form and technique played a big part.
But the 1/4milers...in the old days they called it the 1/4mile run. It was upgraded to a 'sprint':440yds. flat out muscle burning lung searing sprint, no strategy, no pace, just guts and heart. At least that's the way I saw the 1/4milers train.
While he was by far and away the best, they were competing at high altitude and he had the maximum allowable tailwind. So this would have benefitted everyone right? Well after he won, the heavens openned making it too wet for the other competitors. Not that any of them would have come close though.
why are people giving you thumbs down? You are correct; it was raining hard after that, the wind was 2.0 (max for records), and the air was thin in Mexico City. Those were absolutely perfect conditions, can't get better, and Beamon made the jump of his life, literally (after that, he never NEVER jumped over 27 ft again), so it was the perfect jump, at the perfect time...BEAMONESQUE!!!
he does still own the Olympic Record, the World Record was set at the world championships, not the olympics, in Tokyo (I believe) in `91 by Mike Powell
One of the highlights of my stay in Mexico City (a very underrated city by the way) was the visit to the Olympic Stadium, where all those records were beaten.
hiprocka, do you think Mike Powell juiced? I met him by pure chance at a Tokyo nightclub and had a drink with him and his agent and coach. It was the same night after a track meet in Tokyo in 1993 in which Sergey Bubka broke yet another pole vault world record. Only one other Black American guy recognized him at that club.
And then he collapses in tears.....for me, the altitude, tail wind, temperature, are all minor details. There was a profound spiritual struggle occurring at that time. Let's not forget that the stadium was surrounded by armed troops who had killed many demonstrating students a few weeks earlier. I believe that the athletes were, in a sense, also demonstrating but FOR something, not against anything. They showed us all that nothing is impossible with determination, discipline, and teamwork.
I had the good fortune to be there and see this personally. It looked like a regular jump, except that he got his feet level with his head. I recall realizing something special had happened when they couldn't measure his jump because the chain wasn't long enough. It was very hot that day for Oct and the air was thin at the 7,000 elevation. Both of which contributed to the length of the jump.
This is the most staggering achievement in sports history. The world record had only advanced about 8 inches since 1936--Beamon broke it by nearly two feet.
That jump shocked the track world and captured its imagination at the time. I could not get a grip on it as I remember. The pole vault record was 17'8" and someone would have to jump 20' at the time to be more amazing. The best moment in modern track and field by a mile
If you're talking moments and miles... what about the 4x400 men's relay? And the non-believers can't detract from that effort with crap about 'altitude'.
Not as much because Powell had something to shoot at but it is a close 2nd no doubt. I was sort of shocked at Powells great jump too. Also he had Carl Lewis pushing for years. Competition makes better results in all sports. But great point. I had forgotten about Mike
Powell broke Beamons record by a few inches. Beamon broke the previous record by a few feet lol. Do you see the difference. THEY DIDN'T HAVE A MEASURING DEVICE LONG ENOUGH TO MEASURE WHAT HE DID. No one thought it was in the realm of thought, if they did they would have had a measuring device. Also, to make this more spectacular is that he didn't get anywhere close to breaking his record after that.
Awesome movie!
