I won the arcade wizard of wor. Bought it in 1984. It worked until 3 years back., I was playing it and it went off, Got to get is fixed. I tried to find a fuse box, but have no manual.
This game did to me what Alien movies did years ago. And is the reason why F.E.A.R. and Doom 3 failed to do what they were supposed to - playing for hours in shit-filled pants. I had real nightmares of finding myself trapped in a maze with hooded invisible death running around at 100mph. The sound of this game gives me the creeps even today, when I'm 28.
Yepp, best game ever. :) We (my sister, my brother and I) played with it first on our cousin's C64. And after we bought our own C64, this was the first game we started on it. :)
C64 emulator the best download I've done in years. This game is a classic, even watching a utube of it is huge. Is'nt the tune the same as Grog's revenge?
I would love to play an updated 3D co-op version of this game. Of course, whoever made it would probably ruin it horribly. But man, it could be so sick.
Hot Damn! One of my alltime favs rite here! I still remember the place that I had first played it at...Great Game...Back then that music was so haunting!!
this song has the most terrifying sounds EVER.. the sound of when things start speeding up in the levels gives me chills still almost 30 years later, as does the sound of the worluk escaping... and such an electrifying noise when you shoot the wizard..
I play like you...^^ I was so dumb, and sold the C64 to my parents, they love it, too. And today, they don't sell it to me... That's a pitty, but for this reason there is something like ebay...^^
Brings back memories of playing this game on my cousin's Commodore 64. Unfortunately he died from a bike accident 4 years ago. Oh well, I would love to experience the wonder of the C64 right now. Too bad I don't have enough room for one in my room.
@nibelung34343 No of course not. I just need to get one for outside my room that's all. Sometimes I just want to spend some time alone, but then again, it probably wouldn't hurt to get a Commodore 64 for outside my room. It won't be that easy as my house has a lot of stuff in it.
Loved this game - many a quarter found it's way into the arcade version. The "shooter" always reminded me of the late Vaughn Bode's "Cobalt 67" character in profile. Thanks for posting!
still remember the sound track that would come on when the game was not being played.
A voice would say "you will find me the wizard of wor - knock knock knock . The Knock part was him laughing but it sounded like he was saying knock knock knock!
the best part of this game was the two player option and the art of working together or not working together.
I cant count the many times i've played with someone with the intention of working together only to have the inevitable fall out and ending up going to war trying to kill eachother.
I have a C64 emulator and of course this game. Sweet to be able to play it again. I also like the "organ" theme. I hope it plays wel with my new USB joystick.
This game was......scary, nervewracking, it hurried you to do something even if the last monster was on the opposite side of the maze. but I was amazed at the music....."Double Score Dungeon" and the music gets a little bit stuck for that extra chill!
this is one of the most fucked up badass c64 games ever! very disturbing. should be rated R. played it to death with my brother when I was a child. great stuff! thx
One day we found a floppy diskette with no label. We were so young.. we don't known what is the game title, then we called it "spiting bear" beacause the yellow monster like a bear with children eyes and that was my fav monster. We had terrible joysticks and we often killed each other and the game was very hard. But it was funny and I never forget that feeling.. :) sorry for my english.
* Death Race (Exidy - only saw one once, age 6, cabinet art alone gave me nightmares)
* Cliff Hanger (gallows scene)
If you think you're beyond that now, imagine coming across a vintage Wizard of Wor one night in a darkened arcade with no one there but you, and 1 credit mysteriously in the machine ... DUUUHH DUH DUUUUH DUUUUH! ;)
I would roll up my sleeves step up to that machine pop a piece of bazooka joe buble gum look right at the machine and say" al right you computer bastard come and get me"
This one freaked me out too - beads of sweat pouring down my brow, awaiting with chilling trepidation the surprise emergence of the slippery and chaotic Worlord, only to be startled again at the retina-burning display of psychedelic excess when you finally pop the sucker... that's got to have an effect on a kid, I tell you.
The first player was on the right, the yellow worrior. Wizard of Wor is one of the few arcade games where the first player [yellow] is on the right, and the second [blue] player is on the left.
i loved to play this game with a girlfriend, when i was ten years old. this and bubble bobble! we played all night (obviously it was only until 11 pm, but anyway...) childhood memories!!!
wow! I had this on my Commodore 64, back in ye olde times. Not my favorite game, but good to pass the time when I should've been doing homework

"After all these years I'm still scared of the music in this game. I've never feared anything else more than this music."
It's odd, isn't it, how often old video games were scary. I don't think it was just because we were all so much younger.
Something about stripped down, raw visuals. If it's handled right, your imagination will supply the fear.
Way to spank that dickhead Wizard at 5:04 and 7:43! You were always psyched to see someone peg him in the arcade.
