  • I find this funny. It's like the Chinese feel as through Liu Xiang owes it to them to run. In America Michael Phelps, Jeremy Wariner, and Alan Webb train 365 days a year for themselves only if they are lucky enough endure during qualifying rounds can they compete for their country. The athletes do all the work alone, they earned the right to wear their nations colors they owe no one anything more than themselves.

  • This is stupid as hell. These people know nothing about injures. I ran the 110 and 300m in high school and i had constant achillies tendonitis. So i decided to "suck it up" during regions and i ended up completely ripping my achillies, I ended up having survey and missed a whole season in track. I was really dissapointed especilly my coach.

  • If you are an athlete, you will know that you can not just "suck it up" and do it anyways - it will only make the injury worse. He did what he had to.

And for your information, why would he even pretend? why would you even consider he would pretend? this is one of the biggest events EVER to come across in his life and he would do anything for it. So if he doesn't do it..he's not pretending.

  • Li Geng can go and try too hurdle with injury himself, lets see how well that goes.

  • Li Geng is a moron. His story is like this.

Mummy, do I have to be in the Olympics?

Oh honey go run the race!

    I'll fake it!

  • grown up, people! If you were an Olympian, will you pretend and miss such kind of big event, especially at your homeland? I feel sorry for people who are assuming he is pretending. I'd rather suggest those people to "Get a Life"

  • Pretending my ass! Idiots!

  • Why did the little boy get a female voice over?

  • i like how they have a girl talk for the little boy yu he

  • Is this guy still alive? Or did China send him to North Korea to do hard labor?

  • I feel bad for Liu. People never understand when your hurt. It's always, "suck it up. What's wrong with you?" They just don't understand. I think he did the right thing by stopping. He needs to heal up so he can give china a future.

  • Li Geng is a fucking idiot.

  • @Matt4Badgers he faked it... they sent him to North Korea to do hard labor... damn quitter!

  • I will always support Liu Xiang~~~

In fact, i think he did a lots for his country~

    Please never give up~~

  • to historico69: it will be more fun to compare, say 5 years, or 10 years ago, and 10 years, or 5 years later. or what about next year. you are a joke, pathetic.

  • its funny, even with alllll those people the Chinese economy is still 1/5 of the USA.

  • China was ranked 2nd on 2008 gdp table and just about 40 years ago, china was pretty much in stone age. You are just some typical arrogant american that thinks USA is the god. Get some facts and educated.

  • @historico69 Yeah Greedy Americans

  • wow! hardly an accent! usually they say "Loo Zang"

  • I'm Chinese .

    Liu Xiang will always support

  • i feel sorry for the guy who say liu xiang just pretending, I just want to ask him where it's u human feeling, u say something like animal. all people can see on the televison how liu xiang feel sorry for country and people of china. I thing liu xiang at that point it's really done something for his country, let face it he have all the money, so i thing he just really run for country. liu xiang do enough for his country, Question it's what u do to your country so u can give that comment?

  • lol hes telling the truth, a lot of ppl believed/believes that. liu xiang was under too much pressure

  • I run hurdles too.... and its NOT EASY! lets see anyone of those who bash on Liu stand on the track and run those hurdles like him! He didnt let anybody down. he has given his country enough to be proud of. Hell im proud of him and Im Mexican. Anyway... he should keep training. we all want to see him and Dayron duke it out. its gonna be a hell of a race to see those 2 break the record again.

  • They have the right to their opinion. I don't think he faked though. He's a still a great athlete and...hot.

  • ur a fuckin terd skid on my ass moron USA all da way

  • i think china is powerful than the USA

  • dggkamnl!

  • lame

  • i'm sorry ,u try so hard to interview the minors who blame liuxinag .actually if you ever been to beijing ,most ppl think he is still a good athelte . if you insist that he is pretending .well .go and ask himself ,ok ? don't try to mislead your reader anymore . do you have the courage to ask himself or at least ,ask a doctor from your beloved america to check his feet ,okay ?

newyork time . you are so happy to convey misleading message to the public .

  • Highly controversial. You also need to remember if he actually ran this race the Cuban's time would have been different. Who's to say with the competition the Cuban would not have gone sub 12.80! They said that the Cuban had also ran sub his own WR in training - only competition day counts! As it stands the Cuban is the worlds greatest. China have made great progress in an athletic event so should be very proud anyway.. These Chinese scum are pathetic disrespecting one of their own athletes

  • He faked the whole thing as his record was already beat earlier this year. He knew he would not get gold!

  • what i heard he ran nearly 12.80 in training b4 he got hurt

  • u all shut up,he faked it,he faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked ithe faked it,im sure....he is a lier......

  • you really are a dumbass arent you?

  • asshole stfu, the man was plastered with pain while you sit comfortably behind your screen making unfounded accusations. you're the lowest of the low. it's because of people like you, that he's been burden with so much pressure.

  • You have no basis for that, loser.

  • well he given all he have, so i think he still look cool

  • i hope he is coming back and take the medal next time

  • The man goes to the Olympics, willing and ready to jump hurdles to win a gold medal for his country. It is found out that he is injured, but he still steps up to compete. The gun fires, he limps forward, only to have to return to the start line. False start. By then, he knows, he can't compete with such an injury.

The way I see it. It was lose, lose from the start. At least he tried. That's more than anyone else can say.

  • ppl lyk dat scurty grd shud strt realizng dat it's nt easy 2 be an athlete esp in liu xiang's spot.bcoz of d high expectations nd pressure d ppl in china gve him,he tried to enure d pain he's goin through.i mean his injury cud get worst f he ddnt gve up d race.he tried nt 2 disappoint dem.y wud he fake it wen he cud yet agen win a gold medal easily?his coach even cried who knew how much pain liu xiang was goin through.i noe i'm exaggeratin a bit..plz dnt mind me :P

  • Erm ..... What does the guy have to do, run till his leg falls off at the hip before everyone recognises he is only human? They would probably forget after a few weeks then. The security guard should try working out for a few months and then try out. See how fantastic and easy it is to get his shortass frame over hurdles.

  • poor guy. it doesnt help that his face is plastered all over the place in China.

  • this video is the biggest piece of s**t EVA

  • I hate i´t but i love gumnastics

  • how can that guy say he's faking it?? his mom and dad cried! even his coach! why would he give up a historic moment? that is a stupid security guard..

  • faked it after he lost

  • I don't think he faked it... If he still continued racing when he was injured, he DEFINITELY WOULDN'T get a gold. Would the nation be more disappointed in him if that happened? Besides, I don't think anyone would FAKE an injury just to quit such an important event. I mean, you know, once in a lifetime, pride of a nation. He must have been really painful to make such a decision, and at that time, I think he might not want to cause further injury to his foot. It's totally understandable.

  • maybe ur right

  • yea i think

  • I don't get it. What separates this guy from other Chinese athletes? China's already won over 40 gold medals in the Olympics. Why is he oh so special over the others?

  • The reason why this one is unique is because when have you ever, seen a Chinese athlete on any event in Track & Field that traditionally dominated by blacks or other foreign athletes? He is the best that China has to offer, and he is the fastest hurdler on this planet. No other hurdler had come close, even the one who just won the gold for this event. Lui Xiang does it effortlessly as you can see from some clips on youtube.

  • He was the face of the chinese team; advertisers and sponsors backed him to live upto the legacy and be the "seen" symbol for the nation to look up to by the young and old. No doubt he has passion though it was too much to bear on his shoulders, everyone adored his golden boy facade. Good luck to him in the future.

  • Sorry Li Chaomin, you're fucking ugly.

  • Anyone who is not a pure Chinese, pls raise your hand, shut the f* up and step f*k out of this topic. Otherwise each one of you will be hunted by a dedicated communist soldier - watch out, every one of your Chinese neighbors can be a dedicated communist.

  • who is the hottie with the red wig or hair?

  • me :D

  • heard that people cried over it...

  • he should've thought about it being the olympics. when its the olympics... nothing stops you. even if you're injured... you give it all you can for the gold. its just the way its always been... but i feel sorry for him

  • Liu will come back for sure.

  • FengLiuChicago ,

many ppl in Mainland China thought he is faking.

    injuring is better than losing.

  • i cried when i saw him limping...he could never race ofcourse bc he was in so much pain. I wish him the best come london 2012. But then, a new set of racers would probably out run him. good luck liu!

  • watch?v=1UEOZGFzPas

  • A "historic choke"? How's an injury a choke? I'd like to see Jimmy Wang get injured and do hurdles. No, check that. I'd like to see Jimmy Wang do it period.

  • Wow, I can't believe that guy who was saying that the athlete was faking it.

  • i kno ryt.. his wife prolly faked it last nyt too. LOLOLOLOL

  • Hahahaha...

  • CHOKE? What stupid fucking comment...an injury is NOT a choke, irrespective what these people might say or think.

  • Twisted!

  • I posted a comment!!

  • After all that Liu Xiang has done for China, I can't believe there are still some people who bear down on him. Shame on them. It took a lot of courage to walk away from it, knowing that had he competed, he would've ruptured that tendon and never raced again. There are MANY more races than the olympics.

  • Cool Video! 5@@@@@!

  • WTF, pause the video at 1:10 and it looks like he has the smallest foot ever.

  • hey, NYT,

plz upload videos in 'High Quality', 640 x 480 resolution, THX

(try more file formats, wmv, mpg, mov, etc)

  • BigRed3117 ,

    wow, you're still pro-Nazi and pro-Beijing Communists,

    WE ALL miss one here,

    lol

  • Beijing hasn't been Communist since 1976.

  • You don't get it. Some BlueTroller needs a cummi for finishing his masterbation and LOL

  • Gogfreak1984 ,

then who has done the bloody killing in 1989 in Beijing ?

citizen kill themself by the thousands ?

  • he's still great actor

  • poor guy :[

    hes so cute :]

  • historic choke? geeez. they tryin to skewer him hard. and that second interview.. damnnn. where's the love in that guy's heart.

  • Wow lol everyone chill... I didn't mean to offend anyone, i'm just saying it is possible that he did fake the injury.

  • that sounded a bit harsh in the translation. No NO BAD TRANSLATION NYT!!!

  • the translation is wrong.

  • It's so pathetic when people turn a NY Times video into a space to spew their venom. No respect at all. GC. You are trash

  • A competitive spirit is honourable but this cross section of Chinese seem to be more preoccupied with the medal count than care about the state of health of the athletes. And apparently silver and bronze is not even good enough.

  • you people will say anything to discredit them. pathetic.

  • Get a life! I have nothing against the Chinese. I am just commenting on the video. Does everything have to turn into talk of prejudice. Not everyone is into discrimination.

  • Whatever I dont care. I'm just glad Great Britain is up there in third place while shitty countries like Canada and New Zealand, especially Canada with its vast population that dopes up just like everyone else, are so pathetic that they barely make the ranking charts. Meanwhile China is way up there impressively racking all the golds.

Your undermining cynicism is much expected.

  • Good for you. And you call me prejudiced, negative and cynical while you make sure to put a dig in people who are from countries that don't agree with you BS. You are an empty barrel so go ahead take the last word.

  • I'm just laying out the facts "buddeh". I don't give a fuck what you think about China. They have 45 golds, your desperate attempts to discredit them only draw attention towards the fact that Canada is doing pathetic in the Olympics

You really have no room to talk about competiveness when your nation is an underachieving sack of shit

Which reminds me, the US at least had the balls to fight for their independence. You pussies stayed a British colony until we felt sorry for you

  • your.stupid. you know its just what people think or feel about it, it doesn't mean you have to be a complete DOUCHE about it jeez lighten up.

  • No no, they were being the douches and now you're being one.

    Jog on, retard.

  • Whats your info on Luka Magnotta ??? the 411

  • hey if you didnt give a fuck what they thought why go on more about it hm? and jog on? wtf? how about you go die.

  • No no, I never said I didn't care about THIS, I sure do. I definitely care about the olympics.

I just dont care what the detractors below really think of China, as it seems everytime I replied to one of them they start out with "I'm not discriminating" or "I'm not being racist" and obviously giving it away that they probably are rofl

  • the chinese keep havin golds thats why they keep sayin "Chinese seem to be more preoccupied with the medal count than care about the state of health of the athletes"

just like when a basketball player, say kobe, gets 80 points in a game, so they call him a "ballhog"

crazy.. yea its true, any successful person/country has a bunch of jealous haters following em.

  • agree with u. u know chinese love gold

  • he's still good actor

  • I agree, I think he faked the injury. However, I still have a lot of respect for him. Imagine having that much pressure on you. He got the gold 2 years ago, and he had a very slim chance of winning this year. He had way too much pressure on him. If he lost, he would be a disgrace to China. I really do feel bad for him though, having so much pressure on yourself is extremely hard, especially when it's the entire nation of China.

  • he had a record breaking practice run

  • Actually he didn't. The record is 12.87 seconds, he ran 12.90 seconds.

To anyone that says I'm trying to discredit Liu Xiang... I'm not! I'm just saying, it's very possible that he did fake the injury because he didn't want to lose and because a disgrace. I'm not discriminating anyone. I'm just saying, he had a LOT of pressure on him, and it is understandable for him to fake an injury! I mean honestly, he trained for so long, how on earth could his muscle get pulled all of a sudden?

  • "Well-known CCTV presenter Dong Rina cried in front of the cameras after revealing that Liu Xiang ran 12.80 seconds during practice last week. That would have broken both the Olympic and World records."

I didn't accuse you of discriminating anyone. You said that, not me. Not that I care though. Just don't make it so obvious next time.

  • Poor guy :(
