@mrsh I own every Quinessence LP on Vinyl thanx to my dad,i started listening to them in 1991,when i was 16, after he put Giants on a Comp With The Incredible String Band!! I find this video INTRESTING but would rather see & hear Quintessence!! KALA im not sure!!!
Phil Jones and the Unknown Blues had another single which charted well, entitled 'If I had a ticket' and had a film clip for it. If anyone has it , could they upload it, or advise if a copy could be provided. The original band are wanting to find a copy. Thanks.
Never heard of them. Strange film combining go-go dancers and people picking cotton. I did a little tribute to the music which influenced not only mod bands but many others musicians as well.
I did an animated short film. A tribut to R&B Man JIMMY REED. Maybe you like to watch it. Just click on my name.
there used to be a milk bar in Rosamond road opposite the Rosamond bowling club, Maidstone and I kid you not..on a wall next to the entrance had "Phil Jones and The Unknown Blues" written in navy blue pencil..some keen fan must have scrawled it there in the late 60's and it remained there well up until 1980 i always wondered who Phil was when i saw it as i walked in to get the sporting globe..now i know who the unknown Phil is!
PS This song by Phil and the Unknown Blues was performed 'live' most nights at Beethovens disco, in '67 and it was due to the enthusiatic response of the audience that this song was recorded. Was far better live i must admit.
Just because it was recorded in the 60's doesn't make it a 'classic'. Never heard of it myself - not saying it's good or bad, which is pointless anyway. Seems more like a failed attempt by a garage band to make a hit record. No shame in that either.
You're right just because it was recorded in th 60s doesn't make it classic. It is simply a pretty fair remake. Actually what does make it classic is the songs heritage... this was written prior to 1934. it was considered and documented as a "Classic" chain gang song by Alan Lomax. Some beleive that it may have roots as far back as the American slavery era. The song definitely influenced American blues musicians as well.
I think the word 'classic' would be a comment made from someone who 'was there'. Phil Jones was an innovative performer and though this may not be a 'good vid' his intentions to promote this kind of music in the 60s was certainly ground breaking stuff.
Australia has cranked out so many GREAT bands over the years...my faves being the Aussie garage & psych bands of the 60s and the punk bands from the 70s...Too many to name! This is the mod sound that 60s djs today crave...Thanks for sharing it! Any NZ rarities? Chants RnB Live pehaps?
zackW1034 thanks for your reply. I ve been playing quintessence today which sounded good. I recently went to the lyceum theatre london, and was reminded of the quintessence concerts and great atmosphere there. I also wondered what all the other members were doing now. I saw raja ram with quintessence 2 in the late 70 s and simon who used to dance at the front not long ago. I m vegetarian, so know about vegemite which is okay. keep well and get into good music and good things.
Phil jones is a rare breed, last of the mohicans,it's not arrogance, bragging or being conceited, if it's fact, which it most definitely is! I'm sooo proud of you dad and miss you sooo much, can't wait to see you again, hopefully in the near future, love you guys more than words can be expressed. All my love,Hanuman
hi lynette kodimar I remember all those places funny hardly met anyone since those days guess they all bald.I still buy all that old stuff ahh frenches wittys et al.lotsa stories whats that web site of yours?I think it is bethovens which the building is still there.
My motto is,if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it, keep it to yourself!Don't even watch Phil's vids.,and in addition,if you have a problem,I'm confident I can solve it!518 589 5122,by the way I'm one of his sons and I don't appreciate idiotic remarks.People like you are at the bottom of the food chain,so i should'nt be surprised when rats and roaches decide to speak their mind!Just leave my dad alone, cause you don't even know the meaning behind the song. Will always defend my dad!!
I remember phil jones well and yes I do have the 45 Though trying to pick where that is made is not easy maybe melbourne.I remember beethovens, wittys wine bar and frenchs etc.Ausie music of the 60's was as good as if not better than most american and englsih stuff purely down to the distances we were away from the "scene".Dont think much of the d kuepper version sorry.
hi I went to Whittys, Beethovens, Rhubarbs, Surf City, have a 60s site. I assumed this vid was Beethovens. Have you been to Phil Jones site ... there's old images etc.
aussie music of the 60s better than the british music ???? and american, ill name 6 from each ,name 6 aussie bands that wee better, beatles, rolling stones, the kinks, small faces, animals, hollies, american, beach boys, the byrds ,temptations, four tops, jefferson airpane, supremes, also yardbirds, the searchers, hermit hermits, cream,,far to many to mention, bee gees were british ,
This is the real Quintessence, what planet do you come from?Obviously have no taste for Quality music that's far from bland.Keep lookin',you won't find it.Thanks for trying to tarnish my fathers music, too bad it will never destroy his legacy and monumental achievemnts as a musical legend, nice try though, none the less!
zackW1034,it seems there s been a great misunderstanding, mainly my fault.I was looking for quintessence gunga mai etc who were one of my favourites and would love to see live again and could only find jazz rock and heavy metal units using that name which caused my comment.I should have put it on one of their pages and got flak for it, as it bothers me that the opposite meaning I intended has come across. I like the mod clip especially the strong rhythmic singing of P J. I wish you all well.
I thank you greatly for having the integrity to state what you meant more clearly, something that is very hard to find these days with most people.Me and Phil send our love, but this Art72 guy needs serious anger management, nothing vegemite won't cure,ha,ha,ha!(you'd have to be an aussie to know what vegemite is)
'Bend don't break'...i thought that was a cool Oz tune(thanks to countdown for that one )

Surprisingly good. Uncontrived, which is a hell of alot easier said than sung.
Forty years later I hear about this.
Cave life. Not recommended.

Quintessence - wonderful, brilliant. And I can hear that unique, beautiful voice here in a rhythym and blues band.

Bloody awful. The only decent band to come out of Australia since the 60s was The Masters' Apprentices. This chap sound and looks horrendous.
