I seems that Ubuntu's policy is: "Linux users are a small market so we need to make everything as smooth and simple and possible to get more users". Upgrading to a new distro or downloading regular updates is a MILLION times easier in Linux than Windows.
Windows never gave me a choice to update my computer, I would maybe take a shower and it automatically restarted the computer and the once an update broke my computer.
Wow has higher FPS on linux, Cod works on linux but fails at ubuntu (some other distros will work), crysis is said to work im not sure though and i dont know bout gta4
okay ubuntu is an operating system. it is completely free its softwares are open source, which means you dont have to pay for it like in microsoft. ubuntu is a linux distribution (operating system) it is a linux operating system. there are many linux operating systems there like openSUSE, Linux Mint, Mandriva, Fedora, i recommend fedora it is the best linux ever! but now the latest fedora is fedora 10 but they will release fedora 11 on june 9 2009 - hope this helps! also can you pls sub to me!

I want to install Ubuntu but I need Windows for school. Will I be able to write my programs for Windows using Ubuntu ? I use Pascal and Visual FoxPro.
It's all explained on their website, you have all details required installation and so many other things. Recomandation: First install windows, second ubuntu..you will never regret to try it..
I'm about to buy Asus Eee PC 1000HE, and I like to install Ubuntu 9.04 on the Notebook. Is Ubuntu faster and compatible with most things than Windows XP?
Because I like the look of it, and I like to try something new. I will be using this Notebook mostly for making scholwork (office programs and such) and browsing trough the internet.
Well IDK, ubuntu comes with all the things you'll need to make school / work related things, and by going to system, administration, synaptic package manager then search for WINE. install, and you'll be able to run most windows applications as if they were made for ubuntu.
Bleh, Mac OS X theme... Get something better (theme) or get the actual OS. It's just bleh to use a theme that's misleading. It's like people using windows themes on linux.
of course, unless you know what the hell your doing, then windows isn't too shabby. I do, thus, I haven't had any major probs with it for the past 7 years. I also use Ubunto, Mac, Redhat, etc. They all are good in their respective senses. If I want to play Fallout 3 on max resolution and settings, I wouldn't go to my Mac, Ubunto or Redhat. I would use my custom built PC.
linux is shit!!!!!!!!!!!! i had it and nearly though my laptop out the window you need windows or atleased mac dont download linux you will regret it...
I can't speak for mc1mitchie, but 7.10 live CD crashes my system worse than my XP ever did. Even in video safe mode. GParted and Firefox crash within my first few operations and sometimes I don't even make it to the desktop before my system freezes.
That sounds like an awful OS experience. The OS must have shoddy compatibility with your hardware. Either way, an experience like that definitely justifies your feelings. Good luck with your current OS.
It is a free distribution of Linux which has its own flavor of operating system. Its basically an alternative to installing and using Microsoft Windows or Apple's OSX.
how about games, does it support all the games and maybe even this *Games for Windows* and have u ever experienced any problems with drivers for ur hardware, and software in general-which worked fine on windows?
hey PCWizKid, are you using 8.10 right now or are you waiting for a new LTS like me? I tried 8.10 but it was really buggy for me and my speakers or compiz fusion wouldnt work on it.
You got me! yup I just upgraded to 8.10 last week, I couldnt wait, I'll be making tons of videos on that very soon. 8.10 fixed a lot of problems for me.
i know this is off topic. But have you ever tryed portable ubuntu for a flash drive or linux for a flash drive. The program is called pendrive i have tryed using it before but i get a boot load error i was wondering if you could do a tut for me to help me fix me problem
cause it's a radically better operating system than mac (not to mention free), but they like the look of mac? thought it was fairly obvious. unbuntu doesn't really have a "look"
What naryanr said...of course Linux (any distro) is actually way better and more advanced (NOT because is free) than Windows and Mac (Windows being the crappiest) but I think everybody likes the Mac Leopard look. It looks beautiful I think. The only problem will always be the acceptance so Microsoft and Apple (not as much) have way more third party support for certain software and such.
I'm currentley downloading Ubuntu 7.10 iso so I can burn it to have the live disk. I'm going to later install the OS onto my PC from the live disk. But the question I wanted to ask is...how do you go about upgrading the Ubuntu version? Is their a prompt everytime you log on? Or do you have to go through your file menus, ect. to retrieve an upgrade option?
Thats right! Ubuntu has a built in Auto update that checks over the internet for updates and notifies you. So when an updated version of Ubuntu comes out you will be notified.
can you not run games under wine alright? not into games just one of the many things you read about when running ubuntu. not sure all te stuff you learn is a good thing or makes you more depependent on computers!
Hi im building a high end desktop and deciding on what OS to use. So far it looks like ubuntu is going to take the cake (only con is that I don't like the mac looking windows as much as vista). But what's my best choice for speed and compatability? I will be playing games on it.
You can customize Ubuntu to look like vista, thats not hard. I just didnt want to. As for playing games, you can, but directx 9 games, not directx10, you may want to dual boot your PC with windows just incase.
hey never mind. I should have just found out for myself in the first place. Anyway I don't think i will dual boot just because that would mean another 200$ spent. Tho I might eventualy. In my research I'v also found out about open gl. Could Open GL replace my want for directx?
Man I wish ubuntu 8.4 would have worked for me, For some reason fire fox crashed every two minutes. If it would have worked perfect I would have switched from windows to it. Ubuntu in the future will be awesome Cant wait, learning a new Os is fun.
