@SansAuthoritas People enlist to support their family, enlisting is ensured paycheck, where as the American economy is sucking so bad right now you cant be sure if you can find a job to get a pay check. All the people that I know who have enlisted have done it as a last resort. Now I know not all are like that. But most go to support their families and further themselves in school. So yes, once they enlist, they have no choice but to follow orders or go to jail or dishonored discharged.
Their primary goal of fighting is pay. That makes them mercenaries. Not that there's anything wrong with being a mercenary, in itself. But if you're helping kill innocents (and I've heard too many tales of soldiers carrying around an AK to plant on an unarmed person when it turns out they kill the wrong people) you need to do the right thing, no matter if you're put in prison or dishonorably discharged. You can't fight in an unjust war. "Just following orders" doesn't cut it.

Well above what they would make in any civilian job they would land, plus health benefits, plus base housing. All told, the average soldier makes about what the average American makes.
Now, if they don't join for pay, then I sure don't see them going overseas, volunteering on their own dime to fight the guys 4,000 miles away who allegedly pose such a great threat to our liberties and lives. They wouldn't go unless they were paid to go. Doesn't make them missionaries of freedom.

I saw what happened on 9/11. Where was the biggest uprise? All the militias? All the people that I know who have enlisted have done it as a last resort. Now I know not all are like that. But most go to support their families and further themselves in school. So yes, once they enlist, they have no choice but to follow orders or go to jail or dishonored discharged.

Their primary goal of fighting is pay. That makes them mercenaries. Not that there's anything wrong with being a mercenary, in itself. But if you're helping kill innocents (and I've heard too many tales of soldiers carrying around an AK to plant on an unarmed person when it turns out they kill the wrong people) you need to do the right thing, no matter if you're put in prison or dishonorably discharged. You can't fight in an unjust war. "Just following orders" doesn't cut it.

If I kept the job I had in High School, I would have made just as much, if not MORE money than I made in the Marine Corps. I did not do it for the money. I didn't do it for the "fame". I did it because I felt it was my duty to fight for my country.
