The LDR is pretty cool, I like it.
I have an LDR in my room, it's connected to this three way outlet converter that has a mini LED in it.
If it's night time, it comes on, if it's daylight, it goes off. SIMPLE.
If it's in a dark room with no lights, and someone comes into the room, it lets current flow threw it. Alarm System.

electrons go from neg to pos, but conventional current goes from pos to neg. As you mention, a number of people have tried to correct this. Have you been taught differently?
