  • I think, he was defiantly the greatest Briton ever.

  • epic engineering, what a genius for his age. thank you for uploading

  • Hm, the Great Eastern was originally called the Leviathan (a name that would have suited it) and was launched with this name. However the original owners went broke and the new owners of it renamed it Great Eastern.

Also, Clarkson is wrong about nothing bigger being made until the Lusitania. In 1899 the White Star Liner "Oceanic" was longer than the Great Eastern, and in 1901 the "Celtic" surpassed the Great Eastern in tonnage as well.

  • To achieve what he achieved in 30 years? Wow.

  • Is Clarkson not on the original list? What a fucking legend,

  • inspirational

  • @insaaanestuff Wow is this all you can say after watching this? Piss off.

  • thank you very much for the song ... :) you made me happy

  • @633aaron most retarded comment i have seen lol (add this too bookmarks to come back and laugh at this comment in future).......

  • @happilystoned

note the lack of grammar also. AN american. its actually difficult to say " A american"

  • I mean absolutely no disrespect to British people or Brunel he is an engineering genius but I can not call him the greatest Briton of all time. Nope. I will call him the second greatest Briton of all time and the reason for that is one name and one name only and that is Sir Isaac Newton. Brunel took Britons from Bristol to new York but Newton took humanity to the moon and beyond comparing Brunel to Newton is an insult to Newton.

  • I'm with you wholeheartedly, Jeremy Clarkson. Brunel is perhaps the god of engineering, and your documentary on him and his works is an excellent tribute to the man who made the modern world.

  • Is there any long documentary about the SS Great Eastern??.

  • @Sooksawaspakdee961 There's one on my channel you may like 'Ships Bones And Bad Breath'

  • @Sooksawaspakdee961 Yes, you can watch Men of Iron on 40D which is effectively a 3 part series about Brunel.

  • What a great documentary and more than that: What a great person!

Thanks for uploading, it is just awesome!

  • Clarkson does SUCH good docs... I REALLY wish that the Beeb would put them onto dvds... they'd sell well, his Brunel is superb, his VC doc is so moving since it centres on his father in law & the St Nazaire raid doc is wonderful

  • Liverpool? Ugh...

  • absolutely astonishing documentary ... what`s the name of the song at the end ? it`s pure poetry :)

  • @ExoticBrain the song at the end is Aphex Twin - Rhubarb. Off his album Selected Ambient Works vol 2.

  • @drstupid1 thanks exoticbrain - this doc was on last night 23 Jan 2012

  • Legend, absolute legend brilliantly portrayed by JC! Been wanting to watch this documentary again for ages, thanks for the upload :)

  • Thanks for uploading this magnificent documentary. You can tell Brunel is something of a passion subject for Clarkson.

  • One of the best documentaries Clarkson has done. I watched this as it was broadcast, back in 2002 I think it was, and this is the 3rd time Ive watched it here on Youtube (as the bastard bbc keep deleting it). Thanks for posting, Pashby

  • Props for using the music of Richard D. James. Another genius from the same island.

  • thanks for the video, been wanting to see this for so long. thanks again :-)

  • Thanks for the upload, great doc.

  • @FeignofCordor I don my stovepipe!

  • Cheers for uploading - loved this when it was first out and love it now. He's a very clever bloke, Clarkson, which makes it all the more frustrating when he pretends not to be on Top Gear...

  • crazy guy

  • who won the vote tho was 6 parts long that and i wana know now,obv ikb should win

  • @boltonuk i think it was churchill. diana was second i maybe wrong.

  • @77EVERTONFC Brunel was 2nd

  • Thank you so much for uploading this brilliant documentary. Ive been looking for this programme for ages! This ending is perfect for his case with Brunel.

  • One of the greatest documentaries I have ever seen.

  • I love his comments about Princess Diana and Shakespeare.

    I never liked either.

  • That has to be one of the finest closing parts of a documentary every. John Lennon - I am the eggman, I am the walrus. Classic. Thanks for uploading/
