  • the guy who plays the guitar should listen to Doobie Brothers. Get the funk out!!!

  • He seems awful happy singing this sad song.

  • Not bad... But watch this great cover by Slovak singer Peter Cmorik!!!

    watch?v=CKaBsUafYCs

  • Tom Johnston of The Doobies who originally sang this did not sound all that well, white! Total lack of soul I thought. Sort of like if Vanilla ice was to sing this is the vibe I got.

  • Randy , You of all 3 , know Rock Music , the other 2 are idiots ! You don't write the and play the music and sell music like this band has and continues to do year and year again without knowing the business , I think you need to regroup and think before you open your mouth !

  • @RicksBarber and long train running is one of the most overused karaoke songs in the world. fact.

randy was spot on point with his summation. it's not a song to highlight the vocal talents/ranges of a singer. he never said doobies were shit... think you've gone off track here and not really thought in depth about what randy was saying.

  • WTF ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT? NOT A SINGER'S SONG????!!! THE DOOBIE BROTHERS FUCKING WON THE FUCKING BEST VOCAL BAND AWARD! THEIR VOCALS FUCKING MAKE THEIR MUSIC! THESE JUDGES DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC! THEY JUST HAVE THE FUCKING PERSONALITY AND THE LOOKS AND THE FUCKING POP CULTURE BACKGROUND, THATS FUCKING IT! NOTHING ELSE!

  • @sharkark I'd normally agree but Randy played with Journey and he knows a bit about music but He is right on this performance.

  • @sharkark Randy Jackson didn't say the Doobies were shit or couldn't sing or that their vocals were shit. He was talking, in particular, about the TRACK! What he means is that track was a BAND type song not a song for the solo vocalist wishing to highlight the BEST of his/hers vocal range/ability. Frankly Jackson is on point with that comment. Any singer would know that. I have to disagree with you that it's their vocals that make their music since they had a few lead vox over their history...!

  • this guy should sing a Tom Jones song

  • Having been a long time Doobies fan, I thought he did a terrific job...didnt find it "pitchy" at all, Mr. Jackson...He sang it with emotion, and had the right souifui vocals for a song that is very tough to sing well.....

  • His vocals are very good,

but this is not a happy song, it's a song about personal tragedy,

and he's all smiles and hand motions,

    totally innapropriate.

  • 1) Yo yo yo, check it out Dog...

    2) I'm still looking for a Paula Abul song that has a range beyond a few notes,

    3) Simon owns the show, so the bigger the prick factor, the bigger the ratings.

Myself, I have hated A.I. for quite a few years now.

My point? None. I just came across this while looking for Doobie Brothers stuff.

  • He sang it brilliantly. it is a very difficult song to do justice to in Gm7. What a load of wankers the judges are

  • I've heard better!

  • yer this song to me atleast....has always been about the music....i mean the vocals was pretty much decoration for me

  • not the right attitude.. way too laid back.. the vocal line should be more aggressive.. like the guitar (which sucks in this performance)

  • i bet you could play it better right?

i liked the guitar part, as for the singing not too much

  • not bad at all

  • I kinda agree about the song choice: the star of this song has always been the driving guitar strumming, not really the vocals.

  • no 'flow' in his performance.

  • good boy!

  • this was really good!

  • its weird but i actually loved this, and ever since this aired i thought he should have gone on for weeks and weeks...

i still don't know years later what the judges didn't like, and paula please listen back to 'straight up' and 'you knock me out' before you ramble on about a lack of range of notes.

  • Maybe not the best, but should have been in the top10 that season.

  • No one'll top the cover version by the all-girl band featured in 'Harry and Tonto' (1974)

  • My problem was, he obviously wanted to get up there and have fun. So why pep up what is essentially a sad song about tragic loss? (He was cheesing while singing that Lucy had lost her family.)

  • mmmmmmNAH.....

  • what a feelgood performance!

I love it when he POWERS UP at the end of the song!

  • This is one the few performances where I

adamantly disagree with Simon, and the

rest of the judges. I still remember watching this performance, finding it excellent, and then being bewildered by the response. Yes, his final body motion was a bit cheesy, and he didn't interject anything really new from tthe original, but his pitch was right on throughout, and the performance was full of energy and confidence. He did not deserve the criticisms.

  • I remember him, I didn't think his performances were so bad, I just didn't vote for many people back then, even David Cook who was my favorite from the start, I didn't give him a whole lot of votes at the beginning either..

  • every time i hear this it reminds me of hanson they do an awsome cover of this song

  • I heard some guys named the doobie brothers do an okay version.

  • hope you were jokin....plz tell me you were joking....

  • u talkin to me? I was being satirical bc its ridiculous to hear this song and think of hanson rather than the doobie brothers

  • Wow I think I just got rickrolled.

  • hahaha I found this guy so funny. His dance moves were sooo cheesy, especially the smiling to the camera. He did have a good voice though and seemed like a nice guy... but not a star.

  • well they are right in their commentary

  • Jason should be at the top 10... he had a high range of voice... the proof..? just listen this song...

  • jesus, how could they say he was pitchy? It sounded great to me. That's IMHO. I want to find an instrumental version of this song...but I can't find it. I want to sing it without hearing the lead singers voice (I don't know his name...)

  • Brian Adams is the name you're looking for. (You're welcome! :)

  • yeah...that guy....still haven't found the intrumental version....if you can find it..that'll be great too....but you don't have to..infact, don't do it....forget that I said that... :) lol?

  • wow man great voice. you're amazing

  • "It's a song that has not many notes in it!" WHAT? Was she around when it was playing? If she had nothing clever to say, she shoulda shut her mouth! And as far as singing goes, you don't sing "she lost her home and her family" with a wide smile, shaking like Elvis! He has some voice, but A LOT to learn!

  • look at his butt

  • The original PDSTM (Dallas version) ending! :D

  • I agree with the judges.

Poor choice of song, but he sings better than me!

LTR is guitar riff and tight vocals.

  • Lisa Bell on Canadian Idol was so much better!! Jason was OK, not that great.

  • He was great,,they are hating them

  • he is so hot it's ridiculous

  • i kno!!!!

  • I didn't like the vocals, but I thought it was entertaining, well until the end where he was moving his arms in very weird way

  • That was a rather self-congratulatory and boring intro. Having said that, I think he was sent home too soon. It's a travesty that someone like Danny stuck around longer.

  • Ummm, Actually, Danny had such an amazing voice. If you bought the high quality version of 'Superstar' on iTunes, you'd see how amazing he was vocally.

  • Guys, you just need to rethink it. Why are you being so mean? At least give him some compliments. I actually liked him, not just to show an example. And also, sell an album, I'll buy it, and listen to it cause you rock!!

  • He over-sings a straight-ahead funk rock song. All you need do on that song is clip syllables and hit notes. Its strength is in its angular sound, with the rolling percussion creating smoothness behind the sharp, sparse vocal and guitar. Just be rhythmically tight and it'll sound great. The judges are right about it not being a singer's song. His voice is ok but he has a solo artist's sensibility and this is a band song. Cowell's still harsh, though. It wasn't drunk-karaoke bad.

  • I agree, Simon didn't need to get that nasty about it -- the performance was amiable to the point of being smarmy and saccherine, but it certainly wasn't that bad.

This is why I dislike Simon Cowell. He knows he has a reputation of being overly harsh so he goes the extra mile to be a prick.

  • This guy is very talented and has a nice voice. He went home too early!

  • yeah, and you're stupid...

  • He wasn't very good, but Idol has seen worse, FYI.

  • yeah i.e. sanjaya

  • Good singer, he lcan learn to move better!! Paula could help him there!! LOL

  • I love it when someone belts out a perfect, unique singing tone, great lively performance that dwarfs the other bland contestants, and the judges shoot them down.

But when Brooke White or some ghastly singer who can't hold a tune gets up there, it sure was great!

    Why?

Because the whole thing is staged.

The winner is picked before the voting even starts, and they try to make a smooth show with twists in it to boost ratings until the end.

  • This is going to sound mean-- but this guy doesn't not sound that good. At all.

And if the thing was staged the other David would have won, because the judges were gushing about him all season.

  • If you think American Idol is real, you are just a very simple person; that's all there is to it.

  • @TheBanyanEmperor If American Idol was "real" nobody would watch it and the show would suck. Plus there would only be one famous judge out of the three and the producers would have very little say and the top three for this season would be Garrett, Alaina, and Colton... and none would make it big. And to be honest, every reality show is like this. AGT, Th Voice, X Factor... But otherwise it would basically be the equivalence of people singing at a bar only with judges and a camera.

  • Why do you think Paula messed up her lines that one night?

Or why do you think after that Amanda chick would vomit all over the microphone, they would praise her for her singing ability!

  • Ew, I don't remember the judges praising Amanda's singing, but then I was never around when she sang. How did they let her make it so far... Oh! That's right, it is all staged.

Paula's comments were made b/c the judges were watching the rehearsal for the live show, and she had taken notes. (If that is the night u r thinking of) I do not think that the show is staged, but I do think that the judges comments can sometimes effect how America votes. DC is a strong exception to that, however.

  • I'm not so sure about that last sentence. I think that in DC's case, he was put down for his great performances by Simon, so the praise may have backfired on DA and benefited DC.

  • Yeah... it could be that. That and the fact that America realized that they did not want someone who made every song sound virtually the same, had legions of young female fans, an inconspicuous personality, and a stage dad. :)

  • ew. this was awful.

  • i saw him in person during my trip to branson missouriw he works at a diner where they sing to you and stuff. it was awesome

  • I thought this was one of the best performances of all that I have seen so far, it is a shame that he was so lambasted by the judges, especially Simon. This is a guy who obviously enjoyed singing and the song he chose is awesome and was crucified for it. I hope he makes an album and this song is on it, I will buy it for sure. Keep singing Jason, you rock!

  • Wow! I actually thought that really good!!

  • he thinks he's so good!

    haha.

  • wow

  • He's really good looking, and he has good vocals but his movements on stage looked awkward. Simon said it rudely but I agree with him that the dance at the end was really bad.

  • Don't see why you all think he shot himself in the foot... He sang it well and has an interesting voice, the only problem was like gmomgg pointed out he didn't have a definite image like Jason Castro, but did Kristy Lee Cook at the beginning, did Danny Noriega, did Ramiele??

No, yet they got further- I think this Idol is in some ways ageist, he shouldn't have gone this early. Think he was short-changed...

  • omg please warn him never to dance.

  • this guy had decent vocals, he just chose bad songs for this competition. he should've been the first one eliminated. he could've gotten really far if he chose good songs. look at jason castro. no one knew who he was before the top 24 men show, he had a image and sound that could relate to today's viewers (dreadlocks, playing guitar, etc.) and look how far he got.

  • Out of all the great songs made in the 70's and he chose that piece of sh!t song. And the dancing was horrible completely out of sync with the song. You're in a competition where viewers vote, you choose songs that are recognizable and that will connect with them, not crap that you like.

  • Omg! Jason Yeager .. dont end now! I was at Hard Luck Diner not too long after you got back, (im assuming). you sung the song, im not sure what it was called, it was a religious song "but i was crusified..." "and yet i live" i remember that much! =) I cried, and got cold chills the whole time through, i really enjoyed it!!!
