I bought the Maria Callas version of this from a second hand shop, and had no idea this aria was on it. But this lady sings it so wonderfully, it is like it was written for her.

I have never heard opera, but you know Good when you hear good. I also like that gust of wind that came during the end of the vid, like that shit was powerful. even some epic force agreed. Without decending to the usual "this diva kicks that diva's butt" (how sick I am of all that nonsense!), this is absolutely stupendous, and shows what you you can convey just with your voice, standing stock still in the wind.
@SymphonyBrahms i don't know - since opera is one of those arts where the new builds on the old, don't you think that someone might come along who has a good instrument and can take the best of these 'old masters' and make it her own? for my sake I hope and wish that there could be such a person and such a voice. The world cannot survive is such sounds as these are silenced forever.
When I was a student in Vienna in the 1970s, I was also an "extra" at the Staatsoper. I remember being on stage close to Caballé in the 1977 "Norma" that she sang there with Cossotto, Roni, and Cossuta. She was stellar.

I was there that evening and even 37 years later it stays in my mind as one of the greatest evenings I've ever spent at the Opera. The performance was delayed in the hopes that the Mistral would abate - when it was obvious it wouldn't the orchestra clothes pegged their score to their stands and battling the non-ending wind Caballe, Vickers and Veasey gave what was to be in many ways the performance of a lifetime. I knew it had been filmed that night - thank god!

I'm not really an opera lover, but this is purely magic. I mean that there's too many factors to considerate, too many things that can get out of control even at such levels of technique and discipline.. .We can consider ourselves very lucky to have this night documented,that this magic moment happened on tape and was not lost, like other moments surely have been lost. Go search for flaws and compare it with other performances to death if you feel like it, but I don't see the point.
This must be the most beautiful Casta Diva on record. Although I personally prefer the Callas Norma as a whole, Montserrat is a superb exponent of the role. The breath control, phrasing, pianissimi, final trill, fantastic! This 1974 Orange performance is her best ever, the 1972 Scala also very good. The 20th century saw just these three great Normas: Ponselle, Callas, and Caballe. Gencer, Suliotis, Ross, Scotto, Verrett, Sills, Eaglen had some inspired moments. Sutherland? No chance whatsoever.

What's impressive about Caballe's Norma is how well she coloured her voice, to pertain to the heavy role. She no longer sounded like a mere lyric soprano and matured into quite a formidable spinto.

caballe was one of those hot and cold singers but oh my! when she was hot, there was no better singer in the world. there are no words for the perfection that is this aria.
I would not take it to the point of striking the diva abssoluta out of the ring...she will take a 3rd place in my opinion. Beautiful voice, great technique, but...La Callas is unique in this role!

I am not a particularly religious person but when I hear Caballe I believe in God because only God could impart that kind of beauty to anything, including a human being. Caballe by the way loved Callas and all singers have their fans--it's musical baseball but for me Caballe is the voice that brought me to opera and I will always love her apart from and slightly above others.

What's impressive about Caballe's Norma is how well she coloured her voice, to pertain to the heavy role. She no longer sounded like a mere lyric soprano and matured into quite a formidable spinto.

Je suis subjugué, et moi qui pensais ne jamais aimer l'opéra étant adolescent ! Heureusement que l'on évolue ! J'ai 27 ans à présent, la fleur de l'âge, et le temps d'accueillir ce que l'amour et le tragique ont de plus beau. L'opéra en est la quintessence. Montserrat Caballe est tout simplement divine !

caballe was one of those hot and cold singers but oh my! when she was hot, there was no better singer in the world. there are no words for the perfection that is this aria.

I would not take it to the point of striking the diva abssoluta out of the ring...she will take a 3rd place in my opinion. Beautiful voice, great technique, but...La Callas is unique in this role!

I am not a particularly religious person but when I hear Caballe I believe in God because only God could impart that kind of beauty to anything, including a human being. Caballe by the way loved Callas and all singers have their fans--it's musical baseball but for me Caballe is the voice that brought me to opera and I will always love her apart from and slightly above others.

@hydra333 I agree with you, and yet this particular performance by this soloist, chorus, orchestra, technicians on this particular night, as presented here, warrants something more than just brava! But yes, Callas performs this aria marvelously.

This is a gorgeous video of Montserrat Caballe, the definitive Norma of our time. Montserrat sings the music beautifully, unlike Callas whose voice was flawed even in Norma, one of her best roles.
