I can't see music from these two ever aging into the "unhip" archives
their voices are mysterious but pleasant, the music is very swingy and orchestrated well but has this maniacal edge to it and the lyrics are very intriguing
Absolutely phenomenally under-rated and under-played. Why do we hear Louie-Louie a million times and Hang On Sloopy a billion times but NEVER hear ANYTHING from Nancy and Lee on oldies radio? They shove crap down our throats but NEVER indulge us with these great tunes.
i heard this song on the radio the other day in Adelaide, Australia! thought it was a brand new triple j song like little red or something, then realised it was on an oldies station hahaha took me for ever to find this! love it! i'm showing all my friends!
I was in the USAF when this came out. I can't remember how many "NANCY & LEE" 8 tracks LP's I wore out but there were many. Lee will never be recognized for his accomplishments for there were many.
When I first heard this song a few years ago, I kind of had the same thought, but I don't think it was a tribute to her. I have no clue as to what the title is a reference to. ;)
These two made a great duo. While Nancy has a good voice she always did better with a partner. She had limited range but she was great with harmonies. Her brother sounded just like Frank Sr. but never had his fame. Maybe lack of being able to work an audience like his father could.
I always thought of good music as works of art. I asked myself "how does a piece of art get OUTDATED?" To me, songs like this are timeless. I will always love Nancy and Lee's music, regardless if its the 1980s, 1990s, 2000+. Some Velvet Morning, Lady Bird, and Summer Wine are 3 masterpieces. Timeless treasures I wish more people would open their eyes to. Timeless treasures......
I know I'm going to take a huge amount of crap for this statement but.....If nancy sinatra's father wasn't frank sinatra no record company would have given her the time of day. There is absolutely nothing special about her voice......flat, dead-pan styple of singing with no range.
@inkey2 Technically this is true but there is a huge depth of subtle expression going on with her voice that just taps in with some people, and it def works for me, I've always preferred her voice to her fathers, I hear singers with a much wider range and still nowhere near as interesting as this for me.
Art Bell used "Some Velvet Morning" as one of his "bumper music" songs. He wondered if the name Phaedra would start becoming popular in, say, nine months, or so. };-]
Dave here. I learned of this song and "some Velvet Morning" while listening to the C2C Art Bell Show. His taste in music is very much like mine, tending to favor the late '60's thru '70's.
I'm impressed young folk listen to this style of music; it takes a little getting used to, like old black&white movies. I hope all people learn to appreciate all styles of music, because it's the greatest gift mankind ever gave to one another.
@GabbyGraffiti That's great, I think the reason I'm so open minded to all forms of music is that I was exposed to different styles when I was very young. At 8, I got into my stepdad's 50's music collection and am still a fan of that genre of music (but that's just an example). Keep your mind open, and good listening to you.
@RaubhamsterXXL I think you're right, it must've been great. I sat with 7th graders today, and when they told me the music they listened to, I, like Jesus, wept.
Fantastic song. I absolutely love these two! The collaboration of Nancy & Lee was one of the best things to've happened to music. I wish more people my age could appreciate such legendary brilliance. Not many teenagers I know of are open-minded enough to do so. R.I.P. Lee Hazlewood.
Seventeen. Whenever I try to introduce this kind of music to people, they get completely turned off. And that also goes with a lot of music that should be listened to. I mean, I like all kinds of music, so I'm definitely not biased in that department. But everyone else seems to be, to a somewhat depressing degree.. retreating to their Soulja Boy or Children Of Bodom. There's certainly a lot of brilliant music out there that shouldn't be left out. But I suppose some people have tenacious taste..
EnviousElk, I know exactly what you mean. I'm nineteen, and listen to classical music, and all kinds of genres from, say, the 1920s till nowadays songs, but the latter takes over only a small amnount of my MP3 player. When I listen to songs from the 40s and 50s most of the people my age don't really get that (; But let's hope that youtube introduces our generation to songs like this, and make them like it! (:
LETHLSS: I heard them interviewed on "C2C" with Art Bell. Believe I have them on cassette tape, somewhere. Nancy said she didn't know what the songs were about. She said something like, "Lee writes the songs and I sing 'em." Re: "Some Velvet Morning," Lee said Phaedra was his favorite "loser goddess." Nothing ever worked out right for her. Art wondered how many girls would be named Phaedra now that they repopularized that song. She fell in love w/stepson, Hippolytus. Hanged herself.
