  • yeah I agree, Salvatore first mimics the ugliness of the devil, then points at his face. "Ugly as Salvatore, eh?"

  • Yes, he's saying "ugly come Salvatore, huh?", that is "ugly as Salvatore, huh?". I also think he's not saying "la mort e supremos", but "la morte e' sopra a noi" instead, or maybe "la morte e' supra nobis", as suggested by Saga. The translation in both cases is "death is upon us"

  • i don't think he's saying ugly cum salvatore. it'd mean ugly with salvatore (cum, latin for with). I think he's saying "habli cum salvatore" habli = spanish for you speak. so: you're speaking with salvatore. like he's infact itroducing himself to Slater.

  • @rippedandfunky In my opinion he said "ugly cum Salvatore". You're right that "Cum" means "with". Therefore, in this case, "Cum" should be read as "come" in Italian ("as" in english). So, the text should sound in english like "[the devil is as] ugly AS Salvatore". Pay attention: in the scene Salvatore did an impression of the devil, showing the tongue. Then he stated "ugly cum Salvatore" pointing to himself and, finally, did again the impression.

  • superb acting from Perlman!

  • Greatest performance he's ever done, and so underrated :( Deserves more than a pat on the back for this masterpiece.

  • La morte è supra nobis!

  • 1:24 best ever !!!

  • Best acting in all film history: Ron Pearlman as Salvatore. Fantastic!!!

  • Watch out for the dracul who cometh in futurum to gnaw on your anima!

Lol, "Watch out for the vampire who comes in the night to eat your soul!" Hell of a first impression

  • Ron Perlman is absolutely brilliant as Salvatore. Really one of the best roles in this movie, even though the whole thing is brilliant. But Salvatore is especially disgusting. :) Amazing!!

  • "...el diabolo....bääääääääääääääh...muhahahaha!"

    A M A Z I N G !!

  • I love this scene and especially Ron Perlman's acting. He is superb.

  • Rough translation: Penitenziagite (Jesus came to earth; all must repent).watch out for the blood sucker who comes in the future to gnaw on your soul (or spirit). Death is supreme. You think of the apocalypse? There! You have a devil. Ugly as Salvatore, eh? My little brother! Penitenziagite

  • Ron Perlman acting was so good they didn't even have to dub him in the Italian edition, he was crazy and believable with his own acting already

  • This actor is amazing. I love him dearly. As i love the character of Salvatore and the mix of languages he uses. Through this figure, thinking about languages (conceptually) escapes me, and at same time, enchants me.

  • @MaseratiGT100

    not latin.

Nel romanzo di Eco salvatore dice: la mortz est super nos.

Nel film invece dice: la morte è suppra e noi.

Questa frase è più simile al napoletano.

  • @jesuisDominicus

L'interessantissima mistura di lingue in questo brano --"Penitenziagite!"-- fu tradotta diversamente in diverse lingue.

Eco ne parla nel suo _Dire quasi la stessa cosa_.

This most interesting salad of languages in the "Penitenziagite" passage was translated differently into different tongues.

Eco discusses this in his _Experiences in Translation_.

    @MaseratiGT100

In the film and book it is not latin. The same is true for what you wrote. That's definitely not Latin either... close but no cigar :)

Mors, mortis is "death" in latin (morte in Italian). The word belongs to the 3rd declension. Therefore the phrase "Death is upon us" would be "Mors super nos est".

    Best!

In latin there is no such thing as "La" as a female singular article.

  • @freakqnc LA bas is french no latin

  • @bastiaanvb20597 The "La" you referred to is not the same I was referring to. I pointed out the one in the phrase "la mortz est super nos!" where I was validating what the user MaseratiGT100 stated. Please read comments before starting unhelpful critics. Je sais bien que "la bas" c'est un mot de la langue Française et il n'est pas Latin mon chere amì ;)

  • it's "ugly como Salvatore" not "ugly cum salvatore"?

  • Oh I love his movie but I love better the book by U. Eco , read it and you'll never be the same ;-)

  • it's a call to repentence, but it was significant because a few years before this story takes place there had been a violent revolt that involved the followers of Fra Dolcino attacking all of the rich and powerful in the name of an egalitarian poverty semi-inspired by the franciscan movement. they were extremely violent, considered heretics, and by association the franciscan order of monks was nearly banned by the church authorities. Salvatore is using their call, so he was with the heretics.

  • @irgy709 Time to do it again in the 21st Century.

Warren Buffet notes he pays a lower tax rate then his secretary. Remember Jesus and the money changers. Or - youtube dot com slash watch?v=gXZVhKvvMVU :-)

  • Very good!

We would like: Salvatore with mouses and Salvatore singing on the fire.

  • It's spelled penitenTiagite, pronounced TSEE

  • well, it comes from two latin words written together which are Paenitentia and Agite (which is the 2nd plural person of the imperative of the verb ago, -is -itum -ire). This expression is in medieval latin and it is Paenitentiagite.

  • the kid looks like he just came out form happy days. too bad. great movie though.

  • PENTINEZIAGITE!

  • faites pénitence !

  • Pentitevi e agite, questo il motto di fra Dolcino.

  • giusto,levitico 87

  • Penitentiagite, abbreviato da Poenitentiam agite, cioè "fate penitenza"!!, non pentitevi e agite

  • Great book.....good film...thank you.

  • Thanks! Very very thanks for this video!!!

  • one of the best book and film EVER! Salvatore's voice is nice in english.... but I prefer the italian voice :)
