I bet the guys in suits at Tesco sat down and said "Right chaps, before we all go play golf all day, lets see if the money we lost due to that BBC programme was more than the cost of hiring extra staff on the counters. If the drop in profits is less than the cost of hiring more staff, do not hire any more staff" its like that one in Fight Club with the car recalls, same thing.
This is nothing compared to what goes on in the Canadian food retail system. Unlike in Britain however, investigative journalism is almost nonexistent in Canada. As a former British journalist and television reporter I was horrified after seeing first hand how such issues are downplayed or even covered up here in Canada.
Common practise in all super markets. managers are targeted on waste so they will break the rules to make sure they dont get a bollocking for too much waste. I know for FACT that major super markets will bend the rules to save money and to endanger customer wellfare. Temperature control is made up, no one takes it seriously, as long as the "paper work" is ok, nothing gets said. Supermarkets are focussed on sales, food hygiene is a second thought. YOUR local store will be breaking hygiene laws!
I bet it was the poor s*ds on minimum wage who were bullied and punished from the beginning that got sacked - not senior management. It never is. Some of those workers shown were appalling and immoral. Some were just quite clearly too frightened of management to do their jobs properly.
This company that I work for is well managed. Management is the key here, and these managers should be arguing with their general managers about the lack of quality and horribly non-food safe practices. The general managers if they get pressure from higher up should then be arguing with higher up.
This is why the restaurant I work in doesn't have profit goals, it has inhouse goals and delivery goals (pizza place). And then it has two seperate general manager inspection categories taht also influence our bonus. That's right every employee has a bonus that can be penalized for not passing something. Then we also have labor and food cost categories. The way those categories are setup, if quality is bad, those categories will fail to, due to regular inspections by the general manager.
staff are over stretched with managers breating down their necks on deli at tesco my manager expects me to be able to serve and get cooked chix out of oven by myself gad 2 not be there nemore
i work in lufthansa airlines and they change dates on old stuff EVERYDAY - and they practice bad habits with chopping boards and they falsify temprature records everyday. the company is lsg in feltham so if you ever get ill eating airline food on lufthansa, thai airlines, singapore airlines or air new zealand find out from your doc if you have food poisoning!!and not air sickness hmmmmmm
I read that book, but the contents were complete rubbish. I have always loved the BBC and upon finding the book in my local bookstore, I was rather shocked and so decided to research it. A lot of the claims were over-stretched and he used a lot of enjambment. Some were even made out of nowhere or out of quotes, rather than actual fact.
Be very careful with your description of this video! the Karsouris factory doesnt and never has supplied Sainsburys with food! BBC got this wrong!
Quote from Sainsburys website
"With regard to the suppliers featured on the programme, we would like to confirm that, contrary to what was reported by the BBC, Katsouris does not supply Sainsbury's with any ready meals (or 'TV Dinners'"
don'tjump for joy yet vegan, fresh spinach and lettuce had recently went through e-coli contamination alot of people got sick so unless you are growing all your breads grains veggies etc... yourself, your in the same boat as everyone else
Thanks for posting this documentary, heard alot about it but missed it when it was aired. Shocking, but i'm not really suprised that such things go on. The statements issued made me angry, they really do 'wash their hands' of any wrong doing! These multi billion profit companies seem accountable to no one. Although disgusted by some of the actions of staff, i do have a little sympathy for them.

Shocking indeed. But does not compare with the way the BBC is
poisoning minds - and has been for several decades. A must read is Can
we Trust the BBC? by Robin Aitkin - a real insiders story!

Vegans eat only plant-based foods They don't eat foods from animals including meat poultry fish milk eggs & cheese
Lacto-vegetarians consume milk products along with plant-based foods They omit eggs meat fish & poultry
Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat eggs milk & milk products such as cheese & yogurt in addition to plant-based foods They omit red meat fish & poultry
Flexitarians (semivegetarians) primarily follow a plant-based diet but occasionally eat small amounts of meat poultry or fish
