  • Paul, you asked a question about how the real new and other honest media can do better, grow faster... the answer GO FOT IT. Become a non-sarcastic and more scientific version of Alex Jones

  • Domination of one or two corporations is a problem in all sectors of our society. We need to reassert our anti-trust laws.

  • one thing about this that just struck me as odd (yes, i'm still thinking about the content of this video) - you are surprised that few people studying journalism want to be reporters? in the whole video, you're basically arguing that the reporting community is fucked... and either you sell your soul to mainstream media or hope you'll be able to survive (literally, it seems?) as an indie. where would there even be a place for new, idealistic journalists?

  • Conclusion: Journalism, rating(sponsor) base or subscription base(sorry, Paul), & capitalism don't mix together.

It was obvious from the beginning. It's a wonder the end didn't come sooner.

Whether you like it or not, model like BBC (funded by gov. but no obligation to) seems to be the only solution.

  • An oligarchy of well financed journalists and men of unashamedly non-academic venal and public integrity is not to be considered good news is it now.

  • i thought more about this issue and realized what that calculation that was being done means. it is incredible what could be done with the support of as few as 50k people! i mean $500k per month... that could probably pay for a whole team, great equipment and reporting around the world. and all it would take is $10 from 50k people... astounding. and quite disastrous if you think about how many people consume news regularly but... just not from indie sources that would make better use of money.

  • There's never been any such thing as an unbiased reporter. That's journalism school myth. Most early newspapers were extremely biased toward one party or another.

Since the late 50s amerikan journalism has been dominated by commie infiltrators. Only since the early mid 90s has this begun to change.

Commies like this guy are whining because the amerikan communist insurgency is losing its grip on American minds.

Don't understand? Follow my links. Read the quotes page first.

  • Report real stories that will inform the citizens, instead of the same narrative regurgitated in the mainstream news and I guarantee more people will donate. If you actually report, for starter: what really happened on 911 objectively and scientifically without the governments narrative, I for one would donate. How about asking real questions about our dire straits and dig into controversial but very important issues such as, Chem-trails and the corrupt system we try to live under.

  • Remind me which journalists told us that WMD was a fake idea??

  • Excellent example of how NOT everything NEEDS to be profitable to be worthy to society. I can think of a few other examples: Health Care; Air Traffic Control, the Penal System...The obsession with privatization in this country is yet another nail in its coffin. Thanks again to TRNN for "keepin' it real".

  • It's a crisis all right. But it's a bit like reforming politics. How are you going to remove those with agendas? The news organizations are run by the same folks that run the government and they're more interested in manipulating public opinion rather that working towards informing the citizenry. We've got propaganda and lies we've got a system which seeks to provide misinformation and slight of hand.

  • There are still real journalists out there, but they are few and far between, check out. corbettreport@com mediamonarchy@com for some good independent journalism, Keep up the great work Jay. @ = .

  • The problem with the Press in the US is not government censorship, but a form of censorship by the ownership of the media, largely by huge corporations ir billionaires that are uninterested in civil rights and educating the Lower and Middle classes with the kind of journalism that is unbiased and without an agenda. Case in point, Rupert Murdock's Press and TV Stations AKA Fox News is completely skewed toward the ultra-right-wing and new right-wing Republican / GWB mentality.

  • Journalism never had a structure to begin with that could collapse. From what I can tell it was always driven by the interests of established wealth and power.

  • We've been lucky, in Canada, to have excellent public funding for journalism provided by the CBC but I'm very concerned that this could be ending shortly. Canada, for the next four years, will have an ultra right-wing government and, of course, the right wing always considers any intelligent journalism to be left wing in nature. Canada's conservatives hate the CBC and I fear for its survival with the Tories holding our nation's purse strings.

  • excellent video.

  • what a great interview... made me thing about something i haven't given much thought until now. 10-20 years ago, i would actually pay for magazines and newspapers. or pay for satellite/cable. now i read/watch everything online for free and even though as was mentioned here, the actual price of a newspaper probably just roughly covered the printing costs or something and most was advertising/subsidies, i guess it would help indie news a lot if people would consider news worth paying for again.

  • Stubborn people's ego needs to be broken, and that is destined in the future, it will only take time. Perhaps this type of discourse should be enacted after this has occured.

  • Some comments others have left here are disappointing - armchair speculation about e.g. what citizens care about, is useless and tedious, and that the nature of corporate media and independent media is a major research topic involving some very clever and hard working people indeed - please let me recommend 'manufacturing consent', 'no logo' and the 'medialens' website, and also please consider checking whether a given opinion is supported by evidence, especially for such an important topic.

  • I was super-excited when TRNN had their fundraising webathon and really hoped this would start catching on. It's upsetting to hear Paul tell us it hasn't gone as well as planned. Makes me want to up my monthly from $10 to $20, if I can convince mtself I can afford it.

Does anyone know what the intellectual property rights are on TRNN videos? I'd love to help promote by reposting videos to my open video blog.

  • Go Real News Go!

  • Divide and conquer.

The reason that so much independent news media struggles is that it is unfortunately very dispersed. Pooling resources and consolidation is not inherently a bad thing. As long as there is direct accountability (in this case to the monthly donors, i.e the public) it can compete with mainstream media on a larger scale without selling out the institutional structure.

  • At 7:00, McChesney makes the practical argument AGAINST government intervention in media. How do we involve politicians/gov. in subsidizing journalism without giving it the power to regulate in favor of its corporate sponsors?

  • Real independent media -

    The Max Keiser Report!

    The Corbet Report!

Paul Jay grow some balls interview: Ellen Brown, Walter Burien, Paul Craig Roberts, Dr. Ed Ward

  • The people who imply the idea there has been a free press in the 19th, 20th, and 21th is part of the public relation spin. The notion of free press in the 19th, 20th, and 21th is laughable.

Paul Jay is a twisted fuck and with no balls!

    TheREALnews is TheNOTREALnews.

The solution "Trust your gummit to support RealNews". ROFL!!!!

  • @911truthncDotOrg Sure, 911truthncDotOrg. No point in participating in this discourse, it's clear as day from your name the single issue that you are interested in.

  • @Arkinight Please listen to Ellen Brown, Walter Burien, Paul Craig Roberts, Dr. Ed Ward. See if I have a point. It ain't all 9/11 my friend. Very lil matter of fact.

Everyone please search - How the SEG Operates and Eliminates Radiation

  • @911truthncDotOrg As usual they generally lead to one whacko: youtube.com/watch?v=zWqO6i_x0MY

And I have read and listened to these jack offs.

I'm sorry I need to listen to a select few people who are saying what is agreeable to you, but not anyone else? Everyone else is a sellout or a liar unless they say what you want to hear - fantastic logic.

  • @Arkinight Arkinight you are jerkin off right now.

  • As a potentially useless suggestion -maybe have a blog w/ a paywall that is dedicated to discussions about what you are doing in the coming week/s. This would allow interested parties to comment, and participate as things are being put together. Perhaps the 3 out of 4 journalists currently in the PR industry might be appreciative of a heads-up on their concerns, and might be more likely to provide guest speakers. TRN becomes a stronger institution, and a vicious cycle of win ensues.

  • I think that Paul and others confuse the cause and effect. It is not bad journalism make self-government impossible, it is non-caring citizens make real journalism unnecessary. You think people did not know that Iraq war was not about Saddam's WMD? That actions in Lybia are not about bringing democracy? That arrest of Julian Assange was not about him raping a prostitute? People are not idiots and they know that. They just do not care, or are too afraid to care. Journalism will not help.

  • @LeadHammer julian assange raping a prostitute?! who ever said that?

  • @notthere83 Well, not a prostitute, some girl. Does not make a lot of difference. He was framed just like Strauss-Kahn. The higher powers are not very inventive with the charges.

  • @LeadHammer We're too comfortable chasing what the advertisers are telling us to chase. Now, I had a point to make... hold on... just a minute it will come to me.... just gonna see when 'Survivor' is on. Ah shit, my neighbor just rolled up in the Murano I wanted to buy... now I gotta pick a better model. I will not be out done by the Smiths and their prissy fuck-fuck loud mouth children! Screw it all... I will just vote and hope that THAT makes a difference (and it won't because it never has).

  • Truth came before "journalism" whatever that is. If people just tell the truth who needs a "journalist"?

  • I really appreciate how YOUNG independent and responsible reporters do reports for Real News...

  • I donate $5 every month to Real News... I listen to their news every day...

  • Maybe I wasn't listening closely enough, but I didn't hear a solution except for supporting Real News. I do, but I don't see how this one tiny network keeps journalism from collapsing.

  • @BogusDichotomy We are supposed to buy the book to find the solutions.

  • @BogusDichotomy The solution was that government is supposed to return to providing subsidies without strings to spawn independent journalism.

I'm afraid the reason that independent journalism doesn't get enough donations is because the people who go looking for independent news sources are the ones who know how far gone things are, meaning they're the ones also most effected by bad policies and economics, and thus they're also the ones with the least money to give away. :(

  • @Sarandib22 thanks much & I'm going to relisten as I obviously wasnt listening well enough. You're probably partially right about what you say about those who watch outlets like the real news, but I know several folks (including myself) who give regularly to real news, etc. & aren't (yet) the worst affected. Best wishes.

  • This is a problem, and no doubt about it.

The Internet has brought the relationship between goverance and governed to an impending crisis point and unless some way can be found to increase the raport between the parties in a trustworthy way, we may well hit the buffers.

Its sad to say, but I'm afraid Media is in large partly to blame for this situation.

There is just so many times people will take being miss informed before they pull away, and as you highlight - its a devil to sort

  • Uhh. Didn't you get the memo?

    Fixing things is for luddites.

The way forward, the path of progress, will be found by creating bigger and better problems that make your current problems seem inconsequential.

  • This is atrocious.

  • And thanks for a very telling interview and book.

  • "The news isn't lucrative.." sad statement - was it ever supposed to be?

    Citizen journalists unite!

  • It was the "traditional" journalism throughout the 1970s that delivered the US into the hands of the likes of Nixon and Reagan. Politicians have no monopoly on corruption and the newspapers have always served the establishment. Now people feel that the internet provides a much wider choice of sources and the traditional model is dying and so what? Of course if your job depends on it...

  • Wow, who would ever have guessed that a guest on this channel would be promoting public funding for the field they work in?

  • iPods ipads don't provide a donate option. Is there a Real News App.?

  • Dont expect this channel to change journalism... its just like RT good stories but not always the full one. double-edge sword glory theory

  • I've been a journalist since '75 and am now based in France, and it's as bad over here as you could imagine. I've done PR and corporate communications, with no shame. That's a job. But I can't even find work as an actual journalist anymore except to do my own thing here on YT. I have to look at ROLLING STONE for a couple of good articles in English? We still have LIBERATION over here but they are not making it. Even the straight radio journalists here cannot even think to ask the right ?s!

  • Pot, kettle, black; 'therealnews'.

i.e. "Why Kill Bin Laden Now?" - because they found him now; ur insanely populist conspiracy premise makes u look like a typical bunch of vanity publishing arseholes, sometimes.

  • Journalism now has the chance to free itself from participating in mainstream news. I don't think its dead, your just not looking at the places its at. It's on youtube blogs, no more the kowtowing to the news to change the results into more public approval. This is also happening in the movie industry more indie independent movies on youtube and other media sites are coming out that are thought provoking than the movies in theater,

  • @Emil246 Yes, just about the only lively debate is here on YT, but I struggle to get actual corroboration. It's so much a rumor mill. It's something and I'm trying to be supportive when I see someone working hard.

  • Public relations individual= Squealer from Animal Farm.

  • Can you please stop wobbling your head please!?

    Thank you.

    Great show!
