The buwered powered Launchpad has it's disadvantages though. I threw mine away for an APC20. I had a problem in traktor when I mapped the Launchpad to show my cue points. It couldn't handle the data transfer of multiple leds wanting to activate at same time. According to Novation this is a hardware issue and this could not be fixed. I even tried delaying the midi signals coming out through Bome's Midi Translator. The APC20 is far more suitable and works with everything!
@thisisfraa That sucks, good to know thanks for the heads up. I guess as it was designed for Ableton they didnt test it with other packages, still surprising it doesn't work though.
@TheDSPproject okay, I think I'm going to go with the APC40, because to get one refurbished on Akai's site is only 20 $ more then the APC20. Thanks for the reply and thanks for your time!
@TheDSPproject thanks for the reply! However I don't know what was wrong with me when I write that; let me rephrase it: Which is better for performing live remixes with, the APC20 or APC40 with money in mind? By saying this, I mean without touching the computer.
@JakeMccloskeyMusic This is a hard question to answer re:money as its all about perspective / how much you have. Watch my APC20 review video where I explain the differences between the two. You have to decide if you need the extras that the APC40 gives you and do you mind the lager footprint.
Hey this video is great thanks so much. Which would you say is better to make remixes with? As of now I have my (midi) setup is an akai MPK Mini. I know it's not much, but which would you say would be better to use for primarily remixes with the mpk mini? Please write back and thank you!
@JakeMccloskeyMusic it depends on what you mean by remix. In a production sense Its really live thats doing all the work, the controller is just a way to CONTROL live. So for creating remixes neither really has a clear advantage over the other.
See my Akai APC20 basics video for a complete run down. The fader thing yes, the loop thing yes but not with the standard config. Custom mapping would be required.
Can you use the faders to control the volume, pan, aux values etc of audio tracks? Also, can it be used to loop audio inputs which are fed into ablteton live via an audio interface e.g. NI Kontrol 1? Your vids are great btw, very informative!
@TheDSPproject ive had real trouble mapping them it said plug n play on the box but it isnt that simple. The monome doesnt even come with a manual, i thinks tis got an inbuilt reciver or whatever you call it. That auto-maps. Do you think im having trouble because im trying to run it on Vista?? Im really stuck, few tips would be greatly appreciated!
@chanilla1 your telling me apc 20 sucks and you would like to get a monome then the reason you give is the monome doesnt even come with a manual? Very confused.
What do you have?
what are you running (versions of live / novation drivers) ?
what is the problem?
Visa is a F***ing dog that needs to be shot on the face but you should still be able to the gear work.
@clem597 Start with the software only. Learn that first, once you know what you want to control you will be able to make a better decision as to what to buy to control it with.
Sorry just saying....but it was a great review! I just picked up an APC 20 about a month ago and am having the time of my life with it! just got into this whole music production thing and the APC is an amazing tool. Been watching you vids and am learning new things every day.....sorry again about the hair comment but it is a bit greesy. Other wise you are an awesome producer!
i am in the market for a new pair of studio monitors, i am trying to identify yours, but am having no success. what are they, and how do you like them
im looking for my first dj ing setup and im looking to create things like progressive house , kinda like deadmau5 and that kind of music, which do you reckon would be a better choice for me???
@DuBsTePRaVeR97 Well he just said the apc 20 is better for a dj setup. I agree, just because of the faders ext. you need to be able to controll the volumes while djing. I am getting an apc 20 to use with seratos bridge. It seems to be the best choice for that. But if your planning on djing using only ableton live and no dj software. Then the launchpad might be better if you had some other toys to go with it.

How would you manage eq with the APC ??!?! i know there are ways to do that with the launchpad, as the pads become eq levels... (or at least thats what ive been told?)
@neopandorex2 You have a few options depending on how much control you need. You could map the custom banks for the faders, or you could use a button like solo (if you didnt need it) to trigger a preset eq movement (see my "Trigger an automation envelope" video for a how to).
You can use the pads out of the box on the LP to control volume, pan, sends but not EQ however you could custom map this.
thank you so much, this vid was exactly what i was looking for. deffinately getting the launchpad already having the nanokontrol, should make for a pretty sick combo thats portable as hell.
awesome vid! is the Launchpad as 'out of the box' as the APC, will it just be ready to go the second you plug it in? I know the APC has this sorta thing going on.

Question!!
Can you hook a synth piano to both of these (most preferable the launch pad) and designate sounds and instrumentals to different pads?
What hook ups does the launch pad have on the back ?
TheRedDash 2 months ago
@TheRedDash Not directly as it only has USB, see my launchpad basics video for exact details of what it has and can do out of the box. Cheers
