Why is Dream Theater ALWAYS a topic when listening to ANY progressive metal band? Why?

They are all fantastic bands. Lets not stoop to the level of 8 year olds fighting over small things.

Appreciate SG, DT, and Symph X, they deserve it greatly for the music they put out there for all of us to listen too.

the moment the other aspect, which is music appreciation, is completely negated. Personal preferance is fine. I prefer DT over SG and Symphony X. Does this mean I hate Sg and SX? No. It just means I prefer DT's sound. If you really want to get niddy griddy about music composition on who is better, study all their albums, study creativity, theory used, chord structures, and everything else many people have a lack thereof in knowledge about.

So, lets share opinions, not argue.

Clearly, everyone here needs to have their minds reset.

So...

Here is the issue, the definition of comparing is distorted by people to the point where the word "compare" means to see who is better than another. Almost like to see who's balls are bigger. Since that is how the modern day and age think(sad right?) its almost assumed that is what compare means in terms of bands. So to clarify, to compare is to see any similiarities or differences. The moment is a ball size contest.... (cont)

if by comparing apples to cherries you make a useless point about the two which barely has anything to do with the topic it is supposedly related to, you are making it hopeless, then at any given time somebody somewhere may compare cherries to apples since by doing so it makes all hope lost. Yet at the same time they can't since not all hope has been lost before they do compare them.

The new lead singer is alright. Not nearly as powerful as Mike Baker was. Though, this is the first album without the lovely Mike behind the microphone. RIP Mike. Your legacy is not left behind.

Do I really read comparisons with SG and DT?! I hate it... comparisons are just the attempt of people to strongen weak ideas. Especially comparing apples and cherries; they are both from the same type (fruits), but they differ. Do you compare them? No! Only when all means are lost.

@MIND4eva I can compare cherries and apples just fine. Cherries have more of a bite, but are softer to chew on than apples. Also apples are more of a meal than cherries, those are more for snacking.

If one cannot compare bands with each other, than there´s no way to say if a band makes good music. Of course to a certain point they are incomparable, but let´s face it: This song sounds like DT with Queen influences.

@puddingball Finally somebody said it. It seems that nowadays people don't know what 'compare' means anymore. Only if things are different there is a point in comparing at all. It does not mean to equalize, it means to make out differences.

It took me long enough to accept DreamTheaters singer, but goodness there is no way I can get by these vocals. The musicians sounds pretty good though.

great song, also good vocals, brian ashland's vocal's sometimes remind me of geoff tate of queensryche. Btw, this song is far better than under a glass moon by dream theater, although that is a good song as well. such power and emotion in this song, a masterpiece!

@dicktravolta I mean...dude writes some solid melodies, and hes got the range...I just really dont like the tonal quality of his voice, it sounds like hes got a stick up his ass to me... I mean, I know he's a solid vocalist, I cant in good conscious argue that, but I really dont dig him...personal taste
