  • The kid is soooo cute!!! :)

  • You should take the first person who suggest that you take'em on another fishing trip with you with you. Oh would that be me?!?! lol :o)

  • Did anyone who thought the treatment of the fish was inhumane at all notice that the fish were not alive while they were filleted? They were using an electric knife, thats why the fish appeared to be "moving."

  • Whaaaahhh, snap their spines, hit 'em on the head, Whaaah. That just more work and extra steps on a small work surface. You think a bear of mountain lion gives a crap how much it hurts? No, they care about calories.

  • @TheReciprosity im with this guy, more cheese with that whine ladies?

  • You could have snapped their spines before cutting them apart while they're still alive :(

  • These haters are idiots, they don't realize that the market people kill them in a more brutal way.

  • It's not that it's cruel they're killing fish, it's that they're filleting them while they're still alive.

  • i love how frenchiely ( ??) you said Renée, well, if her name is really renée, at least it's what i heard

  • more traveling videos please...i love demos from your friends

  • Looks delicious!!!

  • i honestly want to look like john his mustache is amazing :D

  • just watched another video of a chef who is a fisherman and his funny trip to a flea market. ck it out.

    scott fredel fishing chef

    and he is cute!

  • Tell me a better way to kill a fish rather than drown it with air.

  • I'm a huge fan of the guy but I'm not going to make excuses for him. What I just saw was cruel and unappetizing . And yes, it's no nerves, they had just been caught and they were well alive! For people watching it, just kill it or place them in a bucket with water because it would be the same as if you suffocated for a few minutes and got skinned alive right before you died. I'm not a vegetarian, but there are better ways of being respectful to your food.

  • @viniciusb OH MY GOD, shut up! they were all dead, it's vibrations from the electric knife. Did you see the gills flexing or the mouth pacing? no! they were dead!

  • @viniciusb fuck you, go fishing maybe one time and see what they were doing.

  • @viniciusb Agreed.

  • Thanks.....no I want to fish...and am hungry....

  • Comment removed

  • I love your vies but seeing it filleted whilst still alive was disturbing. And I'm no vegetarian

  • @Dobsessed Shut upppp. They used an electric knife, so it appeared to be moving.

  • Oh my do you see that 1 fish spasming while he saws it in half at 2:08?

  • @intoximacated Nervous twitches. You see that in dead organisms, especially when handling something with as relatively simple a nervous system as a fish.

  • lol why does hunter have a black eye?

  • Why are people crying about the fish? Come on, its nature. Predators in the wild that eat fish are much more harsh than this.

  • that is soo mean... in my opinion that's cruel when they cut the fish when it's still alive.... that 's real sad

  • @hanghuy82 um dude its an electric knife so thats why it moved

  • @hanghuy82 it's actually a hassle to cut fish when they're alive because they simply move around way too much. seeing as how the knife used was an electric knife, that's probably where you're seeing the vibrations.

  • 57 seconds into the video he gave away his fish spot lol

  • You people are stupid, arguing about whether the fish should die. Well, that's life.

  • This video made me become a vegan!

  • ALL YOU FISH CRIERS

quit your bitching its a fish, its at the dead bottom of the food chain, its only point in life is to be eaten by a predator, Bear Grylls has eaten fish alive in so many of his shows just harpoons them and rips their flesh off with his teeth, do you know why? Cos thats life! thats the food chain! we are at the top WE ARE PREDATORS, some of us have bad DNA and somehow end up as herbivores but most of us are Omnivores, remember fish do absolutely nothing of importance.

  • @PPPrulez You know, humans are suppose to be eaten by predators too. And the bottom of the food chain? Oh please... please finnish third grade before spamming the internet with your stupidness...

  • @11moii Actually we're at the top of the food chain, dumbshit.

  • @ItsSomeDeadGuy No, in nature we're not, dumbshit.

Try killing a bear without a gun... Good fucking luck.

  • @11moii So, yeah, native Americans that hunted and killed bears for centuries totally used guns.

    You're fucking retarded.

  • @ItsSomeDeadGuy Are you kidding me? Honestly? Are you just sarcastic or something? I sure as hell hope so!

So you're saying that 180 lbs, 5'9 pathetic ass people without tools or claws killed 1500 lbs 10 feet bears? Yeah, sure....

  • @11moii You probably have not graduated elementary school.

  • @11moii Your grammar is so pathetic that I honestly don't believe that you actually have!

  • @11moii I love how a little kid like yourself is trying to act eloquent and smart.

Part of what puts humans at the top of the food chain is resourcefulness and ability to adapt. Of COURSE tools are going to be part of the equation; human instinct and natural desire to live is what caused us to create tools in the first place.

However, there's no sense using science when debating with retards.

  • @11moii search up the food chain, you'll see humans on top

  • I don't normally do this but:

94 people thought meat was made by warlocks and are squeamish because they've seen how it really is...

Fucking hell that was the worst dislike comment of all time!

  • DUDE !!! remember to invite me next time you do this!.....two thumbs up my friend!

  • This looks delicious!!

  • who cares? they're fish. anyone of you ever actually been fishing?

  • Looked like you had a wonderful time thats just great.

  • Chef John your my hero! I plan to try this with some rainbow trout this spring here in Maryland.

  • With cornmeal it works just the same

  • white fish...white tuna work?

  • where i live, we can fish perch all year round. ive only eaten it once, and do remember that it tasted amazing. best fish ive ever tasted though.

  • Unsubscribe

  • awesome video again, I need to get an electric knife to make my life simpler for fish and meat, and a good idea for my own family to spend time together. The little babies that think animals grow on trees and don't need to be slaughtered to be eaten need to go home and suck their thumbs.

  • People are so ridiculous. It's freaking fish. Why argue? If you don't like the sight of fish being killed or if you don't eat fish. why the hell are you watching. the title said "FRESH PERCH" damnnnnnn

  • Perch and apple sauce - I've got to try it!

  • I'm scared to overcook the butter. Make it too brown.

  • lol

  • Fancy fishing you guys have in usa..

Icy lake, sonar, driller, battery & inversor, electric knife.

    what a gear.

  • If they weren't dead at that point from suffocating (fish out of water), then they'd be dead basically as soon as the electric knife made the first cut, so stop arguing. Also, fish have fundamentally different anatomy from that of humans, dogs, cats etc. Please don't apply our physiology to FISH. It's ignorant.

  • Sad, i hope you dont intend to post more videos like this or ill just stop being a regular viewer

  • The fish story that wouldnt die ......hes dead already , let him rest in peace....!!!....if the friggin fish was alive , the kid did not know it , and neither did the good Chef John , I mean really do you think he said , son that ones alive let skin his ass.....!!!! , come on people lets get real , it was nerves from the fish and if it wasent who gives a rats ass it was not on purpose , thats why we are all human and everyone makes mistakes ,give it a friggin rest......!!!!!

  • @bowhunter2439 Besides, that's how things always have been for thousands of years, minus the advanced tools.

  • Just because the fish moved doesn't mean it was alive. Ever heard the saying "running around like a chicken with its head cut off"? Bodies can still react even when they're completely dead and feel nothing.

  • I sorta disagree, the difference between fresh fish like that, and not so fresh store fish is like the difference between mc donalds and a perfect beef.

  • please stop the sexual references and the hate comments. seriously, how else did you expect them to eat it? this is a modern world and they use modern methods. and if you're vegetarians, DON'T CRITICIZE. if you're gonna criticize something criticize vegetables not something you already hate!

  • @peppysamy1 "An eye for an eye makes the world blind." - Ghandi

  • How many of you sad people are crying over the dead fish

  • As one of the people who makes lots of elaborate dishes, but stays away from fish, rest assured that you've convinced me to give it a shot later this week.

    Thanks!

  • Don't feed the trolls...

  • OH MY GOD THAT LOOKS GOOD :P

  • That blonde chick in the add was HOOOOOOOT........

  • grow some ball hair people theres way worse things going on in the world right now. sorry that your innocent little eyes had to see the poor little fish...pussies...

  • If you go to 2:10, the fish has a spasm while its being cut. I'm not sure if the electric current cause that reaction, but I hope the fish was dead so it didn't go through that.

  • @portelli91 No current flows through the knife blade itself, just to the motor that drives the blade.

  • @tcphelps01 Thanks for the explanation.

  • @portelli91 The electric current's energy is converted to mechanical energy at the motor of the knife. The movement of the blades have no voltage relative to the fish. The movement was not due to electricity.

  • @mathfreak123 Very good explanation. Thank you!

  • brruuuuuuh..... people eat hamburger but dont want to kill the cow =_+ Stupid way of thinking. BTW, Jesus ate meat, duds =_+

  • why must treehuggers always ruin a good thing...

  • Oh man, I haven't eaten fresh perch in years. They're really abundant in Finland.

  • man im so envious...fresh fish :o

  • @ASkyofHeads lol .. fuck you though

  • @ASkyofHeads Sigh... I don't want to argue with you, you might be right, but that guy said that he has a lot of experience with fishing, and he accidentally filleted a live fish before, and the fish was flopping like crazy. Kind of makes sense that the fish would be flopping around like crazy, and not just move its gills if it was getting skinned right?

Again, i don't think chef john would be that cruel to animals.

  • THE GODAMN FISH IS DEAD!!!!!! HE ONLY STRIKED THE NERVES!!! I ALWAYS HAPPENS WITH FRESH FISH!!!! AND HE IS ALSO USING AN ELECTRIC KNIFE, THAT GIVES SOME OF THE MOVEMENT TOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @ASkyofHeads Well, i've never filleted any fish so i don't know anything, but again, I'm pretty sure chef john and that family are pretty experienced, and most likely would have already killed the fish.

Again, the previous highest rated comment stated that the fish are already dead, and the knives are only striking the nerves.

  • To be honest, I never noticed that the fish were still alive when they were filleting the fish.

  • the previous highest rated comment said that the fish are dead, and the knife is just striking the nerves. So chill everyone.

  • Oh lord, people are crying over a fish fillet on the internet. Someone alert the media before this injustice continues. Oh, never mind, it's just a fish and nobody cares.

  • That looks wonderful, I can't wait to try it on some fresh Crappie.

  • fuck animals they all the time and there souls go to heaven after that the bodys end up in ur market or my plate

  • for fuck sake people (like me) get stepped over in the middle east and you all cry over a fish ..

  • Damn people dont like it unsub. Jesus i love animals but, you animal right people are fucking annoying.

  • Lol reading the comment section is just as good as watching chef johns show I LOVE FoodWishes

  • btw, i cant watch ur new video.. its sais ..not avaiable in my country >_<

  • People say here, eating fish is disgusting are disgusting people.. guys, wake up.. this is the real life and not a kindergarten ..even eating plants is killing one potential life on earth so.. its makes no sin..

Just learn how icefishing goes and cook the meal perfectly for honor and respekt for the animal, it would be thanking to be a meal for a very, veryproffesional and awesome cook like chef john ^^

  • You people are retarded O_o The fishes were dead already and that "movement" of that fish was OBVIOUSLY caused by the electric knife... THINK before you write some unnecessary hateful words...

And stop being hypocrite. Unless you are vegetarian you've got no right to say such stupid things... You think that the "meat" you eat killed itself? You should see how big meat companies manufacture animals on a big scale. THAT would SCARE you...

  • @NurikoDB It's not hypocritical to have the opinion that an animal should be killed as quickly as possible rather than being carved alive. Cattle must be bled, but slaughterhouses employ the captive bolt gun to spare them the experience of bleeding to death. How is it hypocritical or "being a pussy" to support such practices? Do people *really* believe that skipping the whack on the head before filleting the fish keeps them from being called a pussy?

  • @tcphelps01 The fish was dead, dumbass. The movement was due to the knife.

  • @ItsSomeDeadGuy My personal experience of many, many fishing trips suggests otherwise, douchebag.

  • @NurikoDB still it is inappropriate to be posting animals being flayed alive.

If i went to your videos and posted a reply video of some cat or dog being flayed alive, you'd have the same reaction.

The fish obviously was reacting to the knife

  • @NurikoDB Your statement shows a lack of understanding of how an electric knife works. Electricity goes through the motor, which converts that energy into mechanical energy to do work. There is no potential difference between the blade of the knife and the fish, so no electricity goes through the fish at all. If you want to understand how the knife works, search for "how electric knife works."

With that said, the movement of the fish was due to being alive.

  • @NurikoDB Copy Cat ^_^ lol.

  • @NurikoDB the electric knife part is bullshit, but i agree with the rest.

  • @NurikoDB uuuh... You can clearly see the fish that was supposed to get killed later twitch, although the electric knife wasn't touching it. Also, it's gills were moving. Dumbass..

  • @11moii IT WAS CUTTING THROUGH A NERVE the fish are all dead, why don't you try going fishing for once in your life instead of showcasing your lack of fish knowledge on the internet

  • @PPPrulez Are you completely brainless??? The impulses from the fuckign nerves have to process in the fucking brain! ANd the fish next to it? It tail was flopping, the saw wasn't even touching it. Grow the fuck up, get some brains and please stop using the internet. My IQ is getting lower by the second. Really.

  • @PPPrulez lmao you're an idiot

  • @11moii actually, the fish that the electric knife was cutting had its tail go up because of the whole nerve thing and it just happened to be that the fish that "twitched" had its tail laying slightly over the tail of the first fish. If you rewatch you can see that it didn't move after that.

  • @NurikoDB

To see such factory farms, and their methods of production, watch the documentary called Earthlings.

  • Camping and cooking is always a win.

  • Thats just disgusting

  • There are three types of people I hate in this world: Hipsters, Republicans, and Animal rights psychos

  • 1:53

Look how the (almost dead) fish reacts to being skinned... ugh! =(

  • @sextusloverlord it want alive, then knife thingy touched th spine and it moved.

  • They were still alive. Bastard

  • Those fish looked dead already to me

  • mrfadi was right. the fishes are not alive. its the electric knife shaking the fish. get over it and leave chef john alone.

  • "why did you fillet the fishes when they were still alive??" Geez people, do you eat meat? You know cows, chickens, and pigs got SLAUGHTERED when they were still alive, right? So unless you're 100% vegan, stop b*tching!!!!

  • @nguoithutu You know, vegetarians don't kill animals while they're alive. So your statement about having to "100 % vegan" to inform people about killing an animal while it's alive is pretty.. not good..

  • @11moii Eating 1 egg = killing a potential animal for me. Anyway, eating vegetables = killing plans. So we all can shut up and enjoy the video, don't you think?

  • @nguoithutu An egg isn't an unborn chick yah know... Because they're unfertilized.... common sense buddy. And the last time I checked, plants can't feel pain... or move... or have nerves... or bones... or muscles...

  • @11moii You're totally right, buddy. Plans don't feel anything so it's okay to kill them. However, animals can feel pain so it's not okay to kill animals. Let's put lions and tigers in jail!!!!

  • @nguoithutu Please, think before you speak. it's getting really REALLY dumb now. Did you know that humans benefit from not eating meat? Did you know that lions would DIE if they'd stop eating meat??

    OMG! So cool huh?

And humans are suppose to know what's best for them... tsk tsk...

  • @11moii OMG!!! I DID NOT KNOW THAT! Lol. Take it easy, buddy. It was supposed to be a joke. Did not eating meat make you that angry? I kid, I kid. =D Well, I know that we get most of our protein from eating meat and everyone has a choice for eating meat or not. So chill out. Props for you, vegetarians and vegans. Life is beautiful, look at the sky. :D

  • fish sticks

  • haha what a great day!!

  • remember just because something moves doesnt mean its alive, not saying the fish were dead but it doesnt mean they were alive. Ever seen people sprinkle salt of raw frogs legs? Look it up here on youtube. Bro.

  • Omg, just laughing .. xD ..ohman, i like this video such proffesional filleting by the kids in this young age ...they have skill :D

i've doin also because a friend made clearly a same trip and it was awesome so tasty, ok.. my version was with some onions and some chinese noodles ..but the hole freshness was blowin up in my mouth and taste the sea in my heart :)

Soooooo delicious and i clearly enjoyed it ^^

  • I think the fish was happy that he was cooked by Chef John!

  • after seeing the fish squirming through the pain of having their muscles cut off and then watching you eat it made me sick

  • WHY FILLET THE FISH WHEN THEY ARE ALIVE???? THIS IS DISGRACEFUL AND SICKENING!!! COME ON CHEF JOHN, THIS IS CRUEL!!!!!

  • @portelli91 They were going to die anyways......

  • @dynamite4life If you knew that you were going to die, would you rather go instantaneously or have your insides ripped apart in front of you? It was inevitable, but I thought that it was terrible to see the fish go through so much pain.

  • @portelli91 How you do you think the fish should be killed then?

  • @dynamite4life I'm no fisherman, but I've went fishing a couple times and the most humane method was to use blunt force against the head. It keeps the meat fresh and doesn't put the fish through a great deal of pain since its a quick death.

  • @portelli91 But i think the fish was already dead when was filleting it

  • aww the kids are so cute!

  • Thumbs down for the ads!

  • please kill the first first and then fley it.

  • guys for real calm down they are not alive fishes watch the video again and they was shaking only because of the electric knife that all so thank chef John and i am really glad to see how you looks like

  • We know the Fitzpatrick family -- great people!

  • I envy You, I want to Ice Fish In a remote location before I die!

  • I am sure none of us would like swimming around in FREEZING cold water covered in ice like the fish in this video, it would be extremely painful and would kill us if we stayed too long, but somehow miraculously it doesn't seem to bother the fish in the least, in fact they seem to love it?! hmmmmm...how is this possible? I guess maybe we'll have to admit that fish are not humans and stop assuming they feel things the same way we do.

  • Here i sit eating my mcwrap.... sigh.

  • Hey Chef John i'm a massive fan you may remember me from such comments as 'high heat and teflon is poisonous' and now on february 11th 2011 i see you deglazing teflon. i mean you gotta do what you gotta do, but don't force me to hold my own 18-day vigil on your internet comments, with hourly twitter-like updates on the status of the president of pans and his apparent refusal to step down. PEACEFULLY!

some people don't kill their fish immediately after catch it seems. we always did. most do.

  • ! Yum all up

    Chef John, you're awesome

    Thanks for being awesome :o)

  • why do so many people just like to compare a human to a fish?? if you are a fish i'm gonna eat you alive... PETA is screwing your mind with naked women... fuck PETA..

i dont even care anymore about dogs' 'rights'... but fish? com'on... why dont you say with you treat vegetable cruelly??? they are alive too, you know?

  • GO OUTDOOR JOHN ....ITS THE FUTURE

  • Great video, Thanks to the FitzPatrick Family and Chef John for sharing.

  • I doubt that most of the people whom are actually complaining about the how the fish are treated actually check how the fish they eat and buy have been treated.

  • some people think meat comes from supermarkets

  • Awesome video chef John!!

  • Wasn't it already dead? I thought the fish was only moving cause he used an electric knife. bzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • @paxchs watch from 2:10, the Fish was in pain when the guy was cutting it with a non-electric knife.

  • Comment removed

  • @chickensaurusrex711 And i wonder why people still eat cow -.- see how they kill that. then this will look like a peanut.

  • @soappop And i wonder why people still eat cow -.- see how they kill that. then this will look like a peanut.

  • @chickensaurusrex711 buuuuuuhhhhhhh....

  • @chickensaurusrex711

don't worry, fish don't have souls

  • @gariono People don't either.

  • @chickensaurusrex711 dude. every fresh fish that's being cleaned and prepped is not alive, rather unconscious. ask every fish butcher in supermarkets, i bet they'd be glad to show you how it's done.

  • @chickensaurusrex711 That was seriously disturbing. I agree.

  • @chickensaurusrex711 Have you seen people cook octopus, half the time it's alive. The best way is the freshest way.
