Je suis émue et touchée par ce que cette musique évoque en moi! Les voix humaines alliées aux instruments donnent un goût de ciel et nous transportent! Très belle cette vidéo de répétition, les atmosphères de répétition sont inspirantes!

Sorry, but i just don't understand your issue with "I did not die".......I think it's just splitting hairs, really. Not being awkward about this, i believe that we have lived a zillion times before and we will again. I did not die, seems to sya it all - my opinion only, but I think so much time is wasted on nitpicking and in so doing, miss the message. This is my opinion only - I don't want to start a huge thread here.
I have a HUGE theological issue with Goodall regarding #5 Lacrymosa. It ends with the statement,"Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I DID NOT DIE. I understand the nuance Goodall is trying to portray... but it fails miserably with Jesus saying,"I did not die." PLEASE, allow me to sing,"I am alive." or "I live again." or ANYTHING else that portrays RISEN FROM THE DEAD instead of "did not die". Most discerning christians SHOULD have a problem with that kind of theology.
@GaryBuster This is a poem written by Mary Frye and I love it. The statement is not to be taken as literally my body is not dead, but that I am an eternal being, therefore 'I' am not dead. This corpse is only the remains of my body. I agree totally with this and Christian theology does support an afterlife where spirits continue to exist in spite of their bodies being laid low.
We just had a school concert which included this. Howard Goodall himself stood up and gave a few words about it. I was really moved when he was talking about the hymn. It's a lovely piece. Ten movements though, I was so tired!
@1401JSC It's more a reflection on contemporary classical music and simple economics that this is what 21st century (modern) music sounds like. No one really wanted to hear Schoenberg apart from a handful of people and in order to keep the orchestras and the tradition alive, they had to start playing things like more aurally-acceptable (to the masses) film scores and the like.
@1401JSC As such, contemporary classical music has branched off into two very separate lines - whether it's the abstract modernism of someone like Thomas Ades or Mark-Anthony Turnage or the more crowd-pleasing Howard Goodall. There's a market for this stuff, and people will come to hear it. Classical music drove itself into this situation and it's music that this which will keep orchestras and concert halls in business.
haha i'm from methody too ^^ do not stand at my grave and weep is my favorite of the songs, though i wish there wern't so many solo's! doesn't leave much for us to do!

@GaryBuster The text is that of the catholic death mass, the same text as both Mozart and Verdi used for their Requiems

The Austrian emperor found Mozart a little too modern!
Schoenberg? Try the first string quartet, Pelleas & Mellisande, First Kazmmersymphonie. Romantic!!
JSC1401 1 year ago
Not denying Schoenberg's Romantic beginnings but that's really not what he became well known for ;-)

@1401JSC Incidentally, I'm playing this in a few weeks and some of is it actually pretty cool, even if it is very Orffean in nature.

@1401JSC Agree!
Have you listened to the music of Gerald Finzi? How about Howells?
