Parts of this show have been officially released on Picture This Live (1998) and Blondie Live - Philadelphia 1978/Dallas 1980 (1999), but neither with JT. The next song was Jet Boy, and JT played on that one, too. Thanks for this!
alrite gotta CHIME in here. Yes techniquely johnny emerged with his talent fully formed and it was bett!er playing in alot of ways techniquely BUT! the sound got thicker surlier and (even) more evocitive as the years waned. BELFAST NITES! so your totally wrong suker
Johnny Thunders applied himself to guitar in the Dolls, under the tutelage of Sylvain. Before the Dolls, Johnny played bass. After the heroin took hold, JT stopped practicing guitar in general. He would say in interviews that his philosophy was that musicians should not be competitive, and that's why he doesn't practice, but really, he had changed priorities. What impressed me about his guitar playing was how far he could stretch a 10 riff repertoire so far.
@firstcat Yea ,your so right about Johnny's playing philosophy, thats what inpired so many of us young punks to make the scene only knowing "three chords" ,that whole event ,momentum thing ,all that energy and bad attitude gave us hope without false asperations , never heard this track before tho ,l think its great ,loved hearing it ,l remember seein Debbie join Johnny on stage once at a great ol punk dico in NYC called " Heat " once ,oh say maybe in 78 ,or somewhere around then ...
Johnny could do something nobody else could: he gotmorethings right-right in front of you than anybody ever did ......( repeat 100 times) Imean: the sound always/ his attitude always ( lou reed is found fishing for his own often) and always hes better that you or anyone, it breakneck paced shit...he gets on stage to make fool of alot of people.....it seems...OK he hit a wall after Gangwar...everyone else has "boxes" "record deals" he remains true (repeat) to the chrome grail.........
Of course Johnny was no B.B.King. He never needed to try because what he did was about attitude, fashion & lifestyle methinks.
That's not to say he didn't get better over the years but his sheer joy doing simple stuff with attitude touched a wound in perfectionists & the public alike.
@pauldbenton Actually I'm a pretty big Thunders fan and I think his guitar playing got worse over the years......not better. Did you see some of his guitar shredding when he was with the Dolls? Fucking genius. It kinda seems like he gradually just started to give up on his guitar over the years or at least trying to get by on minimal effort at least. He was still great don't get me wrong but I think your right....later on he got by on attitude and creativity.
@Flipper79able I disagree, he got even better on guitar as he got older. Im a huge JT fan and have just about every bootleg, official released stuff you can think off. He wasen't always fucked, but when he was super gone he did play sloppy, but when he fine for the most part of gigs he played top notch and his playing got way better. I suggest you get some 85-91 bootlegs and really listen to his playing, some really good shows out there.
it's interesting to speculate as to what aesthetic standards debbie harry possesses if she considers johnny thunders to be "the best" in any sense of the word. he was an idiosyncratic, interesting performer. i can understand why he has a following. but i'm not even sure he was "the best" guitar player on the bowery during the early seventies.
ooo, debbie, marc and jonny i'm in heaven, lol
