Star Wars Vintage KENNER Commercial - Y-Wing

What I don't understand is why did they have a compartment for R2D2 on the Y-WIng, but not on the X-Wing? (The X wing had a button (which opens the s-fols(wings) into attack position. The button BTW looks like R2's head.)

Why did Kenner wait until Return of the Jedi to offer the Y-Wing? It was a popular ship in the original Star Wars movie years before.

@fflyingrabbit They could of probably designed it where if you pressed another button on the Tie-fighter, which I think you meant, the wings would of split open but they made a built in R2D2 part of the action of calling on R2 for to activate the buttons. Probably also due to the structure of the toy with electronics inside who knows.

The best part of this ship was the R2 or his robot buddies ie; R5D4 could enter and leave the back as it was was a special place for a robot crew. Remember the Wing had a non removeable R2 that you pushed down on to make the Xings go out. Always wanted a real action figure to sit in it like this one. Thats why I loved this obsure ship so well. Fragile plastic jet housings in rear however. Very well made toy and very expensive in 80s! cockpit had detail on ceiling too!

That seems right. They did put it out late, after "Return of the Jedi", but the toy was cooler than the films made it out to be. It had too many parts that wouldn't stay in place though.
