I have been told that Maggots are now used in Hospitals to eat away Dead Flesh tissue. I was also told that on certain Animals, the Maggots will also eat the Living Flesh as well. Rabbits are apparently one of those Animals on which the "Maggot Treatment` doesn't work. Perhaps this Reptile is (for Biological/Genetic reasons), another one. Or, it could be that it`s internal Organs were badly damaged. Thanks for this interesting video . Abe

Besides, this is a RATTLESNAKE, so you don't want to make hasty decisions in handling it. If it weren't poisonous, we would have had more options.

poor guy I was always told by my mom that if I was about to run over an animal just to close my eyes and do it not to swerve out of the way cause I could potentially wreck but I still always find myself swerving out of the way.
Sometimes the only thing you can do for an animal, especially a wild one, it euthanize it. The stress of being taken into captivity probably didn't help its condition any. You can tell how far gone he already is as he's not fighting back at all.

Very sad that things had to go the way they did for that beautiful animal. I don't know what I'd have done myself. If I knew it was absolutely hopeless, I think I might have wanted to give it an injection and put it to sleep or something. I came across a Canebreak Timber Rattlesnake in South Carolina once while traveling through a swampy area that had just been hit only minutes if not seconds before. I loaded it into my car and took it back to my motel for a better look but she died on the way.
I tried to alleviate the situation by soaking it in a very mild solution of bleach and water (like pool water) to kill the maggots - and it worked for the most part - but it was just too weak to survive.
the maggots are probably a good thing here.....at least they can keep the stink down by eating flesh as it dies. But I would have sprayed iodine providone on it with a spray bottle or syringe, might have helped??
That is pretty intense. We just covered talking about canerous tumors in corn snakes that looked a heck of alot like that. The maggots are next to impossible to get rid of once they get under the skin. There was talk about how an injection of a super high potent vitamin(I don't remember which) could kill them off...but on a timber, forget it. It's a shame she didn't make it through the night.
