this is excellent, except for the voice. the musicality, expression and pronounciation are excellent. I understand every word. "c'est comme une main" is great, just slimy enough. and "ah s'il était ici, s'il me voyait ainsi, il me trouverait belle", she really sounds like she stopped focusing on the jewels and is thinking of the man she loves (or has a crush on).

Ecouter Callas ne demande pas plus de culture que d'écouter Dessay ou autres. Apprécier son art requiert par contre une certaine intelligence musicale: car cette grande et belle voix, à la technique (quoi qu'on en ait pu dire) exceptionnelle, fait avant tout de la musique, et fonde son art sur une vision totalement objective de sa partition. Grande tragédienne certes, elle n'en sert pas moins et surtout l'écriture du compositeur, parfaitement intériorisée. Et quelle perfection dans la diction!

@PezunaProducciones Yes!!! The funniest bit is when somebody lets the parrot (Iago?) into the recording studio and he cuts in with "I CAN HEAR YOU!" very loudly in one of the quiet bits. Castafiore answers with "Sacrilege! Who dares to interrupt?" and a very tiny voice in the background says "cut!" Another good one is when she called Professor Calculus "Professor Candyfloss". She died too young, and she had terrible trials in her life, but while she still had her strength and her health, she shone so brightly!

Elle est loin d'être accessible à tous publics, car un public non avertit n'écoute instinctivement que la voix et l'art de Callas se situe bien ailleurs! Les maniaques de l'opéra ou plutôt du (beau) son, la critiqueront toujours puisque sur ce point elle est critiquable. Callas a apporté à l'opéra le jeu d'acteur qui était inexistant avant elle et a fortement contribué à la redécouverte du bel canto...

@braveheart030 She learned it from her teacher, who spoke fluent French, and she lived many years in Paris herself.. She was adept with her ears.. and really to learn language you need good ears, and a musician the calibre of Callas, had GREAT ears.

My only regret is that Callas did not record more French roles.. as she had superb French, and could have shed some light on roles that ... other sopranos have glossed over.. this is very lovely... Her Depuis from the same year is also lovely.

Si vous prenez modèle sur son art des couleurs et surtout son génie à trouver instinctivement le climat musical du compositeur, alors bravo, mais ne prenez pas exemple sur sa voix qui à cette époque était bien endommagée! Callas à chanté durant toute sa carrière avec une urgence suicidaire, au début avec ses moyens flamboyants et à la fin avec une voix très diminuée mais toujours avec la même urgence, c'est très excitant mais aussi très dangereux! Oui, je sais que sa voix était très endommagée à l'époque. C'est dommage. Je m'inspire effectivement de son art des couleurs et le climat musical qu'elle fait si bien ressortir.

Beaucoup d'autres chanteurs ont une meilleure voix, mieux entretenue si je peux m'exprimer ainsi. Mais peu ont une si grande musicalité. Je trouve que Callas exprime très bien l'idée des oeuvres qu'elle chante. J'aimerais développer cet aspect, très important à mon avis.

IL est vrai que vocalement elle est dans ses années de déclin. Elle a choisit de graver l'air des bijoux premièrement parce qu'il est incontournable du répertoire français et qu'elle voulait laisser une interprétation différente de celle qu'on a l'habitude d'entendre. Elle voulait traduire un rire intérieur exprimant l'émotion de Marguerite devant ce trésor et pour ma part je trouve qu'elle exprime fort bien ce qu'elle voulait faire passer!
