Man that was awesome!!! congratulations! Are you really sight reading this at this speed or just checking the overall contour of the piece? if you sight read this piece at that tempo that's unbelievable!! and also, who the fuck is turning over the pages? hahaha! amazing man!
Loved the video description, it´s almost dedicated to that (rather big) number of silly people that put emphasis on things like "If you don´t altertante pcik all this notes this is worthless" or "I dont use hammer ons and pull offs because I see it as SHORTCUTS" (That one is Al Di Meola in his REH video) (what the hell?) Instead of enjoyng the musical moment, the actual artistic product. Chet Atkins would use a capo just to make his solo on a song, does it make him "less" amazing?
@insaneguitarfreak I don´t think so, that shows how clever he was in getting the sound he wanted. i think there´s a point in musical (and emotional) maturity, the way of conceiving things, (it´s not the hell of an epiphany though) that many people don´t seem to reach, that allows you to see through BS and pay attention to more important things, such as practising instead of critizising, or enjoying instead of trolling. Marshall, your videos ROCK i love your playing. Facundo from Arg.
I don't like it this fast...but if must be played this fast, then this is the way to do it :O)
There are some vital tones and dynamics missing by the very nature of this particular tempo. But that's okay because this is a demonstration I can appreciate it.
is that the effects of your amplifier or is that just a semi-hollow body? you're hitting the notes quite with ease. I want to know if its just legato, pull-off/hammer-on exercises that got you that fluent with the language of the guitar. or is it dedication to the metronome? or is it just practice in general? I'm a guitarist too... but I have NO knowledge of it. I have a good sense of melody and tension between notes. I just can't write or play complex pieces like jazz or neoclassical music.
Scary stuff. I've been working on and off playing it, as an excuse to refine my right hand technique and play something technically challenging. I'm trying to memorize it though since i can't read that fast.. Heck.. I can't even play it that fast yet (by fast i mean non-virtuoso speeds and tempos... not even 1/8th the speed this is zipping by at!).
@Timotheedle Christopher (nothing draws forth his ire faster than calling him "Chris", btw) Hitchens is dying of cancer as we speak and since I consider him one of the greatest champions of secular humanism and rationality I felt I had to dedicate some sort of tribute to him. This man has unlocked more minds and fought against evil despots using nothing more than a dialectic and pen. He is a great writer but an even greater human being. Everyone should read his book "God is NOT Great"
careful, you might start a religious debate. the bible seems repulsive for all the stoning, slavery, and violence, but there are ways for a christian to respond to that without being stupid. i won't argue that there is a lot of brainwashing in the religious world though. if i didn't find any scientific answers for things in the bible i would probably have turned atheist long ago. thankfully, i always check out both sides of the story though.
@RozarSmacco Beautiful technique and you have Great taste in books ;) Hitchens has been the biggest inspiration in my life for many years now. This is the perfect piece for dedication. Good job. It just goes to show how much music has evolved since Paganini.
"fast classical arpeggio pieces"?? Should I even dignify that with a response? I hate to have to say this but it sounds as if you've never listened to very few if any real musical compositions....There's more than just arpeggios in this magnum opus by Paganini.. ..please study hard...study study....I recommend Piston's Theory book.... thanks Shadow for ironically shining a light to help out our decidedly unlettered friend.
i can appreciate this kind of technicality.... but wheres the melody.. i havent seen you post much of anything other than lightning fast classical arpeggio pieces?
There is a melody. The beginning part is where you hear the melody. I can memorize it. Plus melody means the succession of single tones in musical compositions, as distinguished from harmony and rhythm. Moto Perpetuo isn't meant to be heard one note at a time but as a mixture of notes. You must have not been listening to classical music much or even study composition. The more you study music and play it, the more you have an ear for music like this.
It's called economy of motion. If you really concentrate, you can make your wrist move less instead of just moving it a lot. I just can't move my wrist fast because I would play sloppy if I do.
@RozarSmacco 6:21:3:11 !!!, you sight read that ,? OMG totally insane well done , i just cannot imagine the hours you have spent getting your technique , it is truely the most inspiring thing to watch , i cannot even read english that fast , you would be great in one of those continual numbers memory testers , you know when they recall as many #`s as they can, is there any of Ron Thals playing that has ever pricked up your ears ,? , he is also a master of the Deft of hand ,cheers 2u. the best !
I'll sell my soul to the devil hhhhh a hell of a player and a perfect technique you're one of my faves always waiting for your vids but i didn't find your album yet
How can the middle finger (RH) helps out? Can you please, Marshall, explain this? I play guitar as a hobby, mostly composing some solos for my rock songs, and I would like to understand this in order to improve the performance of my own compositions. Cheers
I liked the "slow" performance cause is more similar to Menuhin's performance, but this let me speechless. Very inspiring, excellent job Marshall, you are a real virtuosi indeed.
@houstonbiker Hey John....I've been trying to play your moto perpetuo for years...it's really tough!! Can you compose a piano accompaniment to play along with? That's why I keep playing this piece here because I have a piano accompaniment to play along with that's what makes it so fun!
Dammit, can't you at least PRETEND it's difficult? The fact that you're cruising through this insane piece at such velocities, barely even glancing at the fretboard, just makes it all the more amazing.
This may sound like a very clichéd request, but have you ever attempted other violin pieces by Paganini, such as the Caprices, on an extended scale guitar like that Schecter? I'm picturing a caprice-to-end-all-caprices in the form of a 5th Caprice on one of those guitars.
Damn...this makes me want to practice for 24 hours before i make the decision to sell my soul and become like Jack Butler and then Practice for 9 years to attempt what Harrison just did.
Oh shoot forget what I said about the last video. This is definitely up to tempo. Sounds a lot better hearing it faster than slower. Man you should do a Paganini caprice or Chopin video, which you used to have but not anymore. Oh yeah what is the tempo? It seems like a hard tempo, even you was breathing hard at the ending of the video.
Amazing. I would really like to learn this piece as played by you Marshall. Do you have a TAB for this? If not, do you know where i can get one from? Also the backing track you played along to? Would be great if you could reply to this post to let me and all the rest of us who may want to learn this know. Cheers.
I thought the previous take was fast! this take like the last one is just amazing except this one is even more incredible.
You must get so many compliments but you genuinely have been the biggest inspiration for my economy picking and of motion, you a long with shawn lane and Holdsworth have inspired me so much and have made me the guitarist who i am. Let me thank you for all your helpful videos and the continuation of your ever growing youtube videos.
