Pinetop Perkins infamously "co-opted" Pinetop Smith's Pinetop's Boogie. For an excellent interpretation look for Silvan Zing's version of Pinetop's Boogie.
Are you all unaware there were two "Pinetop"'s? The "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" Pinetop was born in the 19th century, as the tune was recorded in the 1920s. Ragtime and stride was out of style even in the childhood of the Pinetop who died recently, replaced by jump blues, which is what he played.
Won't go into my brief encounter at a small club, some years back, but had the priviledge of him setting down next to me between sets and buying him a congnac. If I knew where his grave was, I would make the trek and split a bottle with him. William
@9thWardJukebox i meant his timing his incredible, i could never play this piece and shout out "stop!" and "hold yourself!" and talk over it with the same timing as him. absolutely capable, thats why he was good at the caledonia parts with muddy. if you are a musician who struggles with coordination then you would understand
@elstroshitnonstop Oh! I'm not a musician but everyone who sees this song, no matter when they find it thinks Perkins may have died yesterday because of my dumb wording. Wasn't making fun of you, was making fun of me.
@WalkThroughBirdland There are at least 2 men with name "Pinetop" in the Boogie Woogie history. One is the Pinetop Smith which was gun-shot long time ago. This guy is Pinetop Perkins, well known as blues piano player during 70s. I hope this answer your question...
@dbaktiar There was another pianist named Pinetop Burks from Houston. He made some recordings in the 30s. Leadbelly also said he was influenced by a Pinetop Williams who never recorded.
@WalkThroughBirdland Pinetop Smith was shot dead in 1929. This recording is a variation on the Pinetop Smith recording. There have been a number pianists named Pinetop. Pinetop Smith, Pinetop Burks, Pinetop Perkins etc.
I didn't see that Pinetop had passed away. Thank you for your info. I saw him back around 1994 and he really put on a show. It was in a small venue and he stole all our hearts ...AND rocked the place!!! He will always be remembered and missed. Thanks for all your music and memories, Pinetop!
RIP Pinetop. Saw him here in a VFW in MD back in the early 90's with Hubert Sumlin. Taj Mahal was in the crowd, in town for a concert at Wolf Trap in NoVa. He got up onstage and starting channelling Howlin' Wolf while Pinetop and Sumlin COOKED. Great night.
Thank you!

@elstroshitnonstop I suppose I should be clearer on the date he died but I sort of like your cryptic comment.

@bobblehead67 RIP Pinetop. Amen.
I saw Hubert Sumlin with James Cotton in S.F. two years ago.
What a great show. Bluesmen are absolutely righteous, giant talents.

I had the privilege of seeing Pinetop many times over the years, both with Muddy Waters and other groups. He will be missed. RIP
