Russell Hobbs is a huge tool. Not even kidding. The Prophet Bar has had some great performances even in recent times (Peter Murphy, for example), but The Door is the worst thing you can ever add to it. On a happier note though, Trees, Club Dada, The Liquid Lounge, and the Double Wide still remain
I live in Deep Ellum and love it here. After living in the Dallas area for 10 years, I've lived almost everywhere: Plano, Lewisville, Irving, etc. But no place is as awesome as DE.
i grew up in dallas and remember deep ellum around this time and through the early 00s..
deep ellum is one of the most important cultural places in dallas, unfortunately since around 2003 or so it's seen hard times. i used to party down there, it was a taste of real night life for a teenager. saw some great shows at club clearview and the now defunct gypsy tea room.
How about The Bomb factory,,,anyone remember that? I honestly liked DE better when you could give a bum 5 bucks to watch your car for you. Damn those were great times. Gone forever, I guess
I used 2go 2 Deep Ellum often in the early 00's and was just there last week at Rudy's meat market and OMG! .....everythin is gone.....It is a shame that the city was too late to save it...Hopefully they learned their lesson and next time when ppl say they need more police in an area they'll listen.
Deep Ellum is on the rise. ArtLoveMagic, Trees, and the local galleries have a lot to do with it. Though, as times past will reflect - the TALENT is what really calls to the people, and the art is coming home. The old sculptures were recently repainted and look amazing. The Dog Park is kinda cool. Residential properties being occupied and the green movement by Jeff Kiec is inspiring. girlShow is going to pack Deep Ellum out!
Why no mention of The Twilight Room (1982). There hasn't been a more authentic, underground scene since. I saw The Exploited and The U.K. Subs play there when I was just 14. Changed me forever. Fucking Legendary.
Theater Gallery was pretty cool. Deep Ellum was dark, not really any street lights worked, no hot dog stands, definitely no 7-11. It existed somewhere between no man's land and the end of the world. Loved it while it lasted.
I had not been there since 1994 and went through there in April 2009. What the hell happened? My youth has been erased and not by time. It was so lame there.
Lived in D E had Xpose Mag, Suite X Gallery. I mourn DE's death, happens when $ buys "soul". Wonderful & creative spirits that didn't sell their souls, but had to leave. Still contact wt some. My G Father, muscian/artist played wkends at 1 of the "hotels/?" wt ladies of "easy virtue", drew nudes of them. G Ma (E TX) raising children, didn't appreciate his "talents". DE changed my life & introduced me to living life as an "alternative" artist. In FL. older, wiser still "alternative".
1991 was the year I started going down to deep ellum. That was about the time the old guard from the 80's started complaining about how lame it had become. It's funny that now I say the same thing.
deep ellum is coming back...just watch. I lived there at 2538 Elm from 95-98. It was amazing and fun. Was down there last week and saw the new rail station being built on Good Latimer just north of the old tunnel. Lot's of change. There's now a 7-11 and a Subway on Elm right where video bar and the arrangement used to be.
whoa the spin - cue us folks who found a way to dance at baylor! deep in the heart of texas yeehaw. like i said before, back in the day and feelin the years right now but also seems like moments ago. i do miss trolling those super cool, super cheap ellum vintage shops on a saturday afternoon. thanks for the memories, philtex
damn. deep ellum aint tha same no mor. sad. i remember it bein so sick. i remember throwin dozin parties down dere. but now its a ghost town. i hope life comes back soon. memories.
Nice documentary video, i'd like to see more of this kind of stuff, and interviews with the people like the mary interview. She was always so damn cool.
Can't believe how much it's changed. Just had lunch at Brazilian Cafe today. It's sad to see how many of the local shops closed. Would love to see it thrive again...
that was awesome. it brings back lots of great memories seeing those clips of the spin and pop poppins. those were some of my best times ever. any more clips?
lol saw the front of slipped disc studios worn my shoes thin on those sidewalks....lame pick of live bands lmao ..as turner once said...fuckin hippies suck!
Wow....so many memories of deep ellum in the early 90s. Seeing Spin...and poppins, a band I say probably 100 plus times in Deep Ellum, to my first Bob Mould show (night after the infamouse Nirvana Trees show)....it was truly a coming of age place.
I miss it but that was the period of time for me. Glad it was there when I was. Thanks for a great vid.
I just found out some sad news... Alex Magocsi, the music writer who appears in my documentary, passed away in New Mexico last year (2006) Alex, you were a kind, intelligent soul- you will be missed. Phil
Wow, I found this on accident. I had tired to find Alex a year or two ago and had foud out he had died. We were best friends in 6th grade, but lost touch when he moved back to NY to live with his dad. He was a great drummer back then and a great friend. RIP, bro.
Is it true that there are talks of demolishing Deep Ellum, and a movement to save it? I used to live in the area but moved, and I hope it's not in danger of disappearing.
Very well done video of Deep Ellum~! I've been coming down to Deep Ellum since the early 80's, and met my wife at the original Club Clearview in '85. Long live Deep Ellum!
