In a lot of CD compilations "One Hit Wonder" I always saw AWB with PICK UP THE PIECES........then you call yourselves MUSIC PROFESIONALS, theres more to AWB than 'PIECES......YOU GEEZERS
I saw AWB for the first time at 'THE BLACK SWAN' in Sheffield before they were really known, and a couple of times after they were a household name. One of the best concerts I saw them was with KOKOMO in Blackpool, WOW what a night......................................
@mliorfido I had the pleasure of seeing both acts do this song live.....PHAT groove all the way around. AWB's version (original) is a bit slinkier, but both are gonna be classics.
Ned Doheny wrote the song and performed the original, then AWB, then Chaka. No matter - it's a great song, a 70s gem, and just one highlight of those wonderful, soulful times.
Before discovering Elvis, Col. Parker was reputed to have said if he could find a white man who could sing and dance like a black man, he'd make a million dollars. Judging from many comments here regarding the US Black Soul Music disciples known as AWB, I'd say Parker knew what he was talking about. No one is looking for a Black person who sounds like Meatloaf, The Partridge Family, or Nirvana...for very good reason.
Wow! I didn't know AWB actually recorded this. I know Chaka once announced that Hamish Stewart wrote it. This one's very, very nice, very AWB-ish. It's just weird hearing it for the first time having grown up with Chaka's version. I also know Hamish Stewart worked on the "Chaka" album in 1978 and both Stewart & drummer Steve Ferrone worked on Chaka's self-titled album in 1982, so the Chaka/AWB connection was always there. AWB was and is one of the best and most underrated bands ever.
@hmsheppard they also performed together as well on the live dvd chaka khan did live at the roxy in the 80's if you ever get a chance you need to pick that up it is a powerhouse performance EVER SONG sounds better than the record i got the AWB live in montriux Jazz Festival..O My GOD..POWERFUL..here is the punchline-it was done in the 70's..amazing says uzipolo king of decatur
This is overall a good classic song. But if you want a good hype version, then it's Chaka Khan. If you want a good mellow version, then it's AWB. Both versions are hot to me.
JUST KNOW THIS, WE LOVE THESE BROS OVER HERE IN THE STATES, MUSIC IS UNIVERSAL

AWB was more than Pick Up the Pieces. Check out A Love of Your Own. That's my fav. They were good doing the smooth stuff as well as the funk.

To my ears, I hear a lot of Frankie Beverly / Maze influence on some of the phrasing and tone of voice on the lead vocals. Great tune!

Saw AWB in concert with War one time, the best show I ever seen.
I stood on my feet dancing next to the stage for the whole show, at the end of the Show the drummer from War gave me his drumsticks.

I love AWB. They are, perhaps, the funkiest scotsmen to walk the face of the earth. However, Chaka Khan blew them out of the water on this one...

I never knew that they performed this song, much less wrote it.
I grew up with the Chaka version and LOVE it.
But I must say this version is GOOD. It's right up there with Chaka's in my opinion.

Classic Hamish Stuart on vocals, this rates with one of my all time favorite AWB Ballard, and there are a lot more.

George Benson`s 'Turn your Love Around' sounds similar to this jam.

I think the two have different vibes. This is more smooth jazz, and CHaka's is more rock & roll-ish. I like both.
