built one that cost bout 35 bucks shoot easy 50 yards same hight but instead of a counter weight were using a bungicord the wraps over the point 4 times and it throughs pretty nice
@redsyris if it dosent have a counter wieght and it uses a tension building device suck as a spring ( or in this case a bungy cord) it is not a trebuchet it is a catapult

Shit materials=waste of building time.Anyone out there who wants to make a decent attempt at making a trebuchet.....invest in good teak(v.expensive) or oak(good stuff expensive).Price around and CHECK THE GRAIN!!Last thing you need is a weakness in the wood when such pressure is in the equation!!
You definitely need a trigger mechanism for something that big.
I think it's not a case of too much weight but it looks like a case of too much force exerted on a small point. The chains you used to hold the CW on is very thin and your lever seems to have split with the grain of the wood. I'd suggest you hang the CW off a peg running through the CW hole or something that'll distribute the weight better. Mount wheels too for a more smooth throw & distance.
that.. was my thought too. there's a pickup a couple feet from it, and they are firing along a public road. thats a tiny bit irresponsible right there..
If you guys add three screw-in, eye hole things, and make a firing pin (a nail tied to string for example), it would take the human element out of the firing process and make it a little more safe. But yeah, too much weight.
not too much weight.. the dynamic force of the weight was too much for the wood.. if u re try it, put a metal plate on both sides and put your hole for the weight bar in the middle.. secure it with about 4 to 6 carriage bolts and u wont have this problem
Anyone else expecting someone to get really hurt?

Truly, you have got to be kidding me. Get that thing the heck out of town before you rebuild it. This kind of crap gives hurling a bad name.

Where is this? It looks like Langley, BC, near the rockies.

Langley is near the coast range not the Rockies. You're only out by a couple hundred miles.
