Actually I find that Sephiroth does rather well even in vertical stages like Planet's Core and Edge of Madness. Chaos gives me little to no trouble, even in Inward Chaos. Divine Punishment is easily punishable by Heaven's Light, which is fantastic in vertical stages.

The costume details for the characters come from concept art by Yoshitaka Amano, for example the dangling gems on the characters appear in these works (google "yoshitaka amano ff" for some examples), but tend to be left out of the actual game due to the limitations of the hardware at the time. They are a callback that nonfans won't understand, and thus are part of said tendency. A common name for this trend in entertainment media is "fanservice," which despite misconceptions isn't always sexual.

Makes sense in terms of making vids (certain alienation effect), but how do u interpret that feature in terms of the games overall concept? It's standard for Fighting Games, where you can have fights like Cloud vs Cloud or Sephiroth vs Sephiroth, to have an alternate costume for each character, and from game to game, the types of costume alterations vary, ranging from Pallette Swaps (same costume, just different colors, Street Fighter 2 as an example), to completely separate costumes (which tends to be more difficult because you have to make sure all costumes work, like a cape doesn't spaz about.)Continue next comment

Dissidia uses both types, but are always a mythology gag for the games the characters are from. This works with Dissidia's concept as a sort of look back at all of the Final Fantasy games before it. While several are obvious, some are subtle, challenging fans to pick apart the costume's elements. It could be said that this is to make fans feel like they are part of an exclusive, more acknowledged "elite," like an ad might do with its wording.
