Forgive me if you know this already but the little steam plant that you have was to a design by Peter Arnot and was described in a series called Starting in Steam and published in the magazine 'Model Boats' in 1988.
The boiler was made to be fired with solid fuel tablets. These would only run for about 10 minutes, so there was no danger of running the boiler dry. There was therefore no need for a water level gauge. The boiler has a good safety gauge which releases pressure well below the danger level.
Anyway, none of these instruments would be visible when the boat was being used on the water.
Nice engine, John! But the boiler's a little enigmatic to me. I see niether pressure guage nor, more importantly, water gauge! I'd say it's a little hazardous to run without these handy fittings.
Still runs like the wind (or would that be steam?) though!
