  • jeez watch how nervous the interviewer is- its distracting!

  • I was privileged on several occasions to sit in the buss after the gigs with Maynard, Stan Mark, Dennis Deblassiso, TIm Ries, Fisher and many other band mates. Talkin and rappin with the King of the Hi C's. I took thousands of shots and digital. Memories to last a lifetime. Maynard luved Gallo wine LOL, and Life in the JAZZ LANE ! My favorite album of all time New Vintage Ed Man

  • I Followed Maynard his work his bands and so on since the mid 70's and of course admired earlier work with Kenton and various other Big Bands. He was the Master of the Hi C's No one will ever come close. I luved his efforts in the school systems and how he'd grab up, up & Coming Musicians right out of college and give em a seat on the Band Stand and and in the Bus.

  • He says he used to play a .467 bore and now a .464? That's huge for a trumpet. It's like blowing through a water main. He is the Boss!! RIP MF.

  • 2:12 - 2:24 - What is he doing with his tongue?

  • who's that interview Maynard at the time? I believe is Reggie Watkins.

  • Fantabulous!! Mad about this album, every song is perfect.. Just downloaded this album for free at DownloadMusic[.]im , ..

  • RIP

  • i got to see maynard in the late 80's. he and his band came to town and played a local high school. i will never forget him standing 10 feet from me screaming on that horn playing hey jude. incredible.

i only wish i had gotten to see buddy rich perform before he left us. imagine the band in heaven....duke ellington, buddy rich, maynard, louis armstrong, harry james, steve marcus. tommy dorsey, glen miller, al grey.............the list goes on and on

  • @cadillacdude1975 Assuming that's where everyone ended up, a mighty band of musicians indeed!

  • RIP Boss!!......Hello Reggie!!

  • My father took me and a friend to see Maynard at the old Brandi's Wharf on the Delaware River in Philly in 1971. Randy Jones did a 30 min. drum solo while Maynard was at the bar.

It was AWESOME!! As a young horn player at the time...it blew me away. His sound was sooo true and penetrating. People were falling over! Rest in Peace Man!

  • Hearing the Chameleon album was what made me decide to do music full time. Saw him live a few times in the 70s

  • guantos snos ele tem o Maynard Ferguson

  • RIP Maynard. He came and performed at my high school jazz festival the year before he passed away, but I was out of town. I've been kicking myself ever since.

  • We miss ya Boss!

  • That would be a strad. Bach Stradivarius. A strat is a guitar.

  • How much do monette horns cost? I'm imagining with their clientele, they must be VERY expensive.

  • The one Maynard uses costs about $9,000 to $10,0000, i just talked to Monette trumpet company :(

  • What about some of the other horns? I know their mouthpieces go for about $150-$200, and PRANAs are even more expensive.

  • DAMN! My Bach Strad only cost 1800 :p

  • mine was 1300, anniversary edition

  • The Medication he speaks of for blowing your lip is good ole Preperation H Hemmeroid ointment. It works wonders!!Try it my fellow Brass guys! By the way, we need to get some Canadian Brass on here. No Jass, but They do INSANE ensembel pieces!

  • he says more ums than barack obama.... but thats okay, hes an incredible player! RIP the boss!

  • i noticed that too. :P

  • GREAT

  • your lucky to have a holten I am stuck on a tr500...SUCK

  • interesting video. i am fortunate to have one of MF's personal played and owned MF horns with his inintials and holton logo inside the bell. nice instrument. and some of his mouthpieces.

  • @MFHORNS111 When he did seminars the students were somehow convinced that his mf model was differant than theirs he said no they are the same ill trade you mine for yours if you want to they all said no

  • @spacepatrolman Yeah, I witnessed that as well. funny moment! mine has the engraved discs in the bell. Larry Ramirez of Holton/Leblanc told me they only made a few of those for MF. Larry told me they made them especially for him to go with the Olympic rings, when he played for the closing ceremonies for the Olympics in 76. you can see an ex. of it on youtube playing Conquistador on the Mike Douglas show.

  • @MFHORNS111 when maynard was on the mike douglas show he sang a song about linda lovelace with mike douglas a book on timothy leary has leary living with maynard maynards daughter didnt like leary she thought he was an oportunist another book said that maynard had the cops after him so he went to india a third book stated that he went to india because he liked ravi shankar

  • Hey Secretmarksman:You should tune your horn before you begin playing the reason for me posting my comments was just to make the point that brands do not matter however we can agree that you should buy a mouthpiece because it has all the chracteristics that you are looking for; the main thing should be that it fits you perfect and you can play it it should be the same for the trumpet when you are buying. My friend loves A.Sandoval but when he tried his trumpet model not a note came out.

  • ummm, since when do you not trust your ears for tuning? its not like you can pull out a tuner in the middle of your playing and adjust. most of your tuning probably will be done by ear.

  • I think he's getting at the natural intonation of the horn, so you can get a good feel for what your going to have to do to adjust (if necessary) most horns usually have some kind of imperfection...generally

  • freaky laugh

  • Ya Know, a GREAT player will sound good on ANY horn or ANY mouthpeice. Give a listen to Buddy Morrow on Trombone... find "The Golden Trombone" album or "Night Train" on RCA or Mecury... I was with Buddy Morrow for 15 years and he told me that Bill Ratzenberger (Jet-tone mouthpeices in Fairfield, CT )gave hime a mouthpeice and it became The Buddy Morrow Personal Model" Buddy could play on a garden hose and sound great!!!

  • I have the same type of monette that MF had in this vid. I love it!

  • I was really upset when he died. He will be missed for a long time. He was truly one of the best.

  • correction suki.....he was THE best

  • FACT, MF preferred Canada Dry ginger ale. actually not a joke

  • Maynard would have sounded great on just about anything!

  • get a good instrument no matter what model the , learn to play it and just be your self! do you walk better becuase you bought nice nice nice and expensive Shoes? NO

You walk and run beter because the seize and shoes you wear are conforrtable not the Model of the shoes! <adiddas or nike or what ever. <thats thesame with with trumpet playing!

  • word

  • i just got a Van Cleave MV3 love it, it has a real fat, mellow sound to it

  • cool. you're the first person i've ever heard that has one of those horns. is it well built? better than the horn you played before?

  • yea its definatelybetter than my old horn, and better built, i used to use a King 600

  • I have one too it's sick real responsive and does have a fat sound snd is awesome in all ranges of the horn. i've never had a valve stick on it yet and barely have to oil it. but it's an awesome horn ( Highly recommended)

  • Save yourself a few grand, go buy a gold plated Schilke B6L or S42L. Bill Chase played a B6Lb and Roger Ingram plays a S42L. With the extra money you save, you can buy a gold plated Schilke P5-4 Picc to use on legit gigs.

  • I cant believe there comparing holton to monette, its like mediocre horn company to the best in the world, lol.

  • Monette is not the best in the world at all, its just like any other horn company...except the horns are over-priced and goofy looking. it hardly makes any difference in sound. the player is what matters

  • Right! These big musicians were never approached by Monnete when they had no Names! The made up their names playing on different model instruments...in secret most of them miss their former horns...

  • @GooStreet play one then say that again!!

  • Maynard,um trompetista que jamais será esquecido por todos aqueles que são adeptos do trompete.Cachoeiro de itapemirim ES BRASIL

  • r.i.p. maynard!!

  • lol his laugh is funny :) ..

    mooo HEEEH EEEAH!!

  • actually, the cheapest one is around 8 grand lol. But i think i can handle the cost

  • Rowan University loves Maynard!

  • No Monette instrument is free, Monette makes them pay for everything. They might get special treatment though ;-)

  • i was thinking about getting a monette, anyone know what kind i should get for classical music?

  • P3 or P1 is probably best for classical

  • Just watching him speak makes me smile. I miss him.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean.

  • yeah- i use a 22b and w46 mouthpiece and i get a big sound on that- .464 is huge!

  • In Japan he play

    Locky -- Gonna Fry Now!

  • .464" of bore, that is big!!! My 2B has a .485"/.495" bore... that's only .020" of difference!

  • If any of you weenies ever approach the level of Maynard's virtuosity in your own horn playing, then maybe, MAYBE, you'd have room to talk about free horns and the like.

Yeah, he got old. We all do. He was the best thing that ever happened to the brass section in the high school band room. May he rest in peace.

  • a person can hit those notes with a 7c mouthpiece.

  • Yea, but you wouldnt want to play lead with a 7c.

  • ah ah ah ^^

  • "we don't want to go there do we". damn brilliant joke!!! and a brilliant player i might add

  • he just sounds soo... so ...... old but he's a legend.... THE man

  • Maynard did not make much sense in the last minute of this clip...kind of sad really.

  • Sorry, but I disagree. His discussion of the contact point where horn meets stratospheric trumpeter was fascinating. He was locked in tight.

  • recuerdo de manera muy especial cuando MF, estuvo en Venezuela. eso fue a principios de los 80

  • I thought it was quite interesting that Maynard, for a long time, used v-cup mouthpieces. I played mellophone in high-school, and had a *beautiful* instrument by King which had an adapter so you could use a real "French" horn mouthpiece instead of the standard one. I thought it gave a *much* better tone (concert-horn mps are v-cupped as "standard", unlike trumpet mps), with some "roundness" to back up the "edge".

  • THE legend...may he rest peacefully and continue jamming with the greats who have past. Is it me, or do you get the feeling Peter Griffin from Family Guy is being interviwed here?

  • Love and miss you Maynard...RIP...miss you.

  • Interesting! Way to go, Reggie! He (Maynard) wasn't digging anything out of the mpc - he was feeling the contour of the cup and inner rim. I'd love to play the Monette MF PRANA trumpet. I passed up my opportunities to try one because I know I can't afford it!

  • Maynard is the greatest but what is he digging out of that mouthpiece?

  • maynard, louis, and arturo = the best trumpet players ever

  • This is great! please post more maynard ferguson stuff. Thank you!
