how can people praise him for his work. his structures are so UGLY. plain and simple. they may be revolutionary/cutting edge/etc but when all is said and done - they are UGLY. his last name (Gaudi) has become synonymous with low class/loud/in your face/ugly architecture/interior design.
Pity BBC chose to call him "Antonio" in Spanish instead of "Antoni" in Catalan. The fact that, in his time, Gaudí was forced by law to "spanify" his name like all Catalans, because Catalan had been outlawed, and was until the end of the fascist regime in 1978, is no excuse for Hugues and the BBC to perpetuate this injustice.
Esto no es del todo cierto. Gaudí es muy anterior al régimen franquista (no fascista como se dice... que era una cosa italiana). En aquél tiempo no estaba prohibido el catalán. El nombre Antoni se podía utilizar igual que Antonio; del mismo modo que puede decirse Nueva York ó New York. En cuanto al régimen, no terminó en 1978... El régimen no era transitorio, sino permanente... y sigue vigente hoy en 2009. El distingo es muy importante, y no hay que olvidarlo.
Mejor te informas antes de abrir esa gran boca que tienes. En los años 20, el estado español vivía en una dictadura, la de Primo de Rivera, donde el idioma y la cultura catalana fueron prohibidos. Duró sólo unas horas y, sin duda, hizo subirse por las paredes a las autoridades por contestar en catalán; pero el motivo fue su enfrentamiento con el "orden". A mí me han detenido por menos.
