  • Emotional Ballad with a story and poetic substance -another classic.

  • Want our gospel choir in Oxford to sing this! Seen so many versions but this simple piano one is lush!

  • We are singing this song in Choir!!! I love it it almost makes me cry. ;(

  • Are those all guys in the crowd? lol

  • ...who the hell is Mariana's Trench?

  • @LarryTheTubaBoy A Canadian band who does an acapella cover of this song sometimes. Here's (in my opinion) their best performance of it: /watch?v=4v7cH9PudVY

  • @LPHJHGuitar

I know!!! Marianas Trench is just sooo amazing! I Love their cover of it!!! =D

  • @LarryTheTubaBoy

    A Canadian Band, they're amazing =D

  • When Marianas Trench has the kind of awards that Billys got, then MT fans can talk all the shit they want.

  • My dad, not knowing this song, would always say "And so it goes". I always took it as a "this too shall pass" sort of saying. I never knew this Billy Joel song. I just You Tubed "So it Goes" and hit this song. My dad has left this earth, just a few days ago, in a better place. I find comfort with this song, and am glad to have discovered it. I find it a bit sad, yet comforting in a very odd sense......so it goes. So it goes.

  • @perss2000 I get the feeling your father is trying to show you he is ok...I really do..especially 2 days after his passing....you might find comfort in a book called "Heaven is For Real." I hope you are doing alright.

  • @thisisfunny88 Thanks I'll check out the book. Hanging in there. This song helps.

  • @perss2000 Funny that you should use the phrase "so it goes" in reference to death. In Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, that phrase is inseparably connected with mortality. That's not what Billy Joel was talking about, but nonetheless you should read the book and see what I'm talking about. It's one of the most highly rated classics.

  • The first time I heard this song was not from Billy. It was from a barbershop quartet who were known as Underage (now known as LoveNotes) at the Women's Barbershop International Competition in Detroit 2005.

My wife and I were in tears and had to hold each other afterwards.

Simply one of the most beautiful songs ever.

  • Singing this in Choir class :)

  • billy is awesome

  • This is my favorite Billy Joel song!!

  • One of my favorite Billy Joel songs...so beautiful..

  • This makes me think of my boyfriend, who is currently serving a church mission. This just echoes how he felt about leaving me, I think (and he sang several Billy Joel songs to me before he left). alsdjfoasdjfadsof ;___; All my creys.

Admittedly, I downloaded the Marianas Trench cover of this song first, BUT Billy is one of the best at what he does. Gah I love his music.

  • @CassitheCombatButler lol I did too. TRENCHER 4EVER

  • The TEARS...The TEARS....they pool in my eyes, run down my cheeks, into my mouth, onto my tounge...salty, sad tears. This song is always sooooo beautiful, its pangs the heart!!!!!!! BEAUTIFUL LOVE IT

  • I can't listen to this song guys. Gotta mute it. I don't wanna cry.

  • The word to describe this performance is "Goosebumps"

  • just love billy, this is one the songs that i always play when i'm feeling my lowest

  • Watching this video and then seeing an advertisement for Nicki Minaj's "Stupid Hoe", really makes me depressed about the direction music has taken over the past decade.

  • @AchromaticRefractor my exact thoughts.

  • @AchromaticRefractor Right said

  • Oh... a song that actually made me cry... this was...

How do you describe a song that you feel someone has plucked the words from your heart and had given life to them?

  • My chorus decided to sing this song this year. I'm excited

  • @timhogan44 mine too

  • 22 years ago, when my late husband and I were first together, sitting in the bar of our favorite Chinese restaurant (no bottles of red or white there) this was the song we played on the jukebox--played and played and played until other patrons complained.

I chose to be with him, he chose to break my heart by leaving me, momentarily, in death.

And so it goes, as Vonnegut, and later, Joel, tells us.

    And so it goes.

    ta da. finis

  • This always succeeds in making me cry because it's so beautiful :')

  • This song may have a nice poem or a touchy story, but what Im searching for is good melody, and this one doesn't got one. I'm not criticizing this either

  • beautiful :)

  • I really want to do this song in choir it would make me so happy

  • I'm really questioning my mode of perception right now... I read that Billy Joel said he associates his slower songs like this in light shades of green and blue. When to me this song is obviously tinged light yellow, orange and brown... Would love to hear other opinions on the subject!

  • I have sang this song to my daughter every night since she was in my tummy :)

  • @TesSamonkey You ate your daughter? :0

  • Wow tv sucks...

  • Lord of the Rings? May it be?

  • Hi everybody, could you check out my cover of this? I really would like some feedback on it. Thank you, and thank you Billy Joel for this AMAZING song.

  • This will forever be one of my favourite songs. Classic.

  • Comment removed

  • Classic..Joel. I love him and all his music.

  • Only around a million or so views? What has this world come to?

  • @justforlescomments not everyone can handle how beautiful and sad and perfect this song is.

  • Well what can you do...

    forever alone

  • who else is here because of Boston Legal?

  • @MsCreepyChan I am, sir!

  • @MsCreepyChan So strange, I read your comment yesterday, and in the evening, after i went to a christmas party, i put on the television at half past 2 in the night, and I see Boston Legal, and it is the exact part with this song! I felt really happy!

  • This is what music is all about. Someone pouring out his heart into his music, this is exactly what music today lacks.

  • No one beats the piano man. This is his song, and he feels it.

  • Billy Joel's music played a hugh role in my younger years that matured into womanhood. I passionately lived my life then, as I do now. He was a prolific artist and entertainer. An icon in his glory. Thank you Mr. Joel .

  • marianas version is cold, all-polish....totally loses the beautiful quiet melancholic quality of this song...for me Kings Singers & Billy Joel's versions are best...contented wd it.

  • @gazunt mariana's trench did a beautiful cover.

  • youtube seriously needs an automatic replay button so songs can just go on and on and on...

  • @blckbooty

Type "repeat" into a YouTube URL before the ".com" to watch it on repeat:

  • thank you Morningstar.....I'll cherish this memory forever!

  • We used this song for our ballad in marching band(:

  • @TheKay865 Our band too! :)

  • Billy was hopeful in the phrasing of this most underrated ballad, yet bitter in its execution. That bitter hope -- contained here in his voice -- is not unlike the hope one might have about anything else.

  • @fmelir8 This song has a fairly simple, repetitive tune, but he manages to make it beautiful with his phrasing.

  • this song gives me chills every time! and my choir is doing it for our winter concert!!! yay!!!

  • One man on a piano had more impact on a generation than dozens of groups with fire and lasers and grandstanding. Outstanding work.

  • this song has soul. that is what modern pop songs are missing in this era of music that promotes violence and addiction. billy, we need to have more artist like you become great again in the eyes of everyone. you are one of my heros mr. joel. my hat is off to you. good job.

  • This ballad has such a timeless quality and sounds like an Irish standard. Odd to think he wrote this after his breakup with Elle McPherson, but it wasn't released until six years later when he was engaged to Christie Brinkley (for whom he wrote Uptown Girl). I would say Elle had a better artistic impact on Joel, but he was married to Christie for nine years and produced a stunning daughter, Alexa.

  • Billy. Your my idol.

  • it's funny how he wrote we didn't start the fire, one the worst songs i have ever heard, and yet then he writes something like this

  • @fitzay32 Yep you're so right. "We didn't.... " is not his best work. This is though. Like any artist, he has his hits and misses. Nobody's perfect.

  • look at the microphone tremble in awe

  • Why the fuck is there a background of Bieber behind this?? That's blasphemy, I tell you!

  • Charlie, where is my money?

  • But if my silence made you leave Then that would be my worst mistake So I will share this room with you And you can have this heart to break And this is why my eyes are closed It's just as well for all I've seen And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows So I would choose to be with you That's if the choice were mine to make But you can make decisions too And you can have this heart to break And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows.
  • 16 people have no taste in music.

    OR LIFE.

  • i like this song and i like marianas trenches cover aswell

  • My mother really liked this song. She died in 1991. Every time I hear this song I think of her.

  • this is the ballad of my marching band's show this year :)

  • @msannalouise95

Wow. We did New York State of Mind

  • @Kbchick1 and @msannalouise95

can yall send me link to that cause id love to see it

  • Tears every time. ='(

  • I just love Billy Joel, and it makes me so sad that many people my age are unaware of his talent. We're singing a beautiful version of this in choir, and I just love how pretty it sounds. Billy's lyrics are just perfect!

  • My school Chamber Choir sang a SATB arrangement of this, a capella. It was so beautiful, had many people in tears or on the verge of tears. Mr Joel is such a talented musician, and this song is one of his most beautiful creations. Always has me nearly in tears listening to him singing it- so much emotion.

  • im singing this is voice class and i didnt know that joel had such a great voice

  • here's to billy joel... to real men singing real music... real meaning behind real words that are not only sung but felt by everyone

  • @serinbo Yeah!!! There is a time for fighting and a time for singing. Spartacus.

  • @serinbo yes i agree totally with you..this song , leningrad, saigon and piano man are among the best songs ever, the lyrics and tunes are so emotive and powerful they kind of draw you in..pure magic...

  • @59jimmyb i know right! i got my brother who had never even heard of Billy Joel to start listening. and of course he got it. i can never explain what some of those songs mean or how they can make one feel it is as you said 'pure magic'

  • why only 1.5 million views? so sad how many people have no form of any music education at all and think its just fine when their 15 year old slut daughters listen to kesha.

  • Every Billy Joel video I go to, someone is singing it in a concert.

  • My choir is singing this.. I put as much emotion into it when we're singing, to make Billy proud <3

  • @Iamfofreakinsho I sang this song in my choir too!! I had the solo :)

  • 16 people just added to my To-Kill list

  • we're singing this in show choir :)

  • @myloginemail101 Upload it to youtube, will you?

  • we sang this in choir today and i had never heard it before and i was acctually tearing up because I was getting flashbacks which was weird...

  • My school choir is singing this song for our concert. It's so pretty. I feel like I'm gonna cry whenever we sing it.

  • And did those feet, in ancient times...

  • Śliczny utwór !!!

  • 16 people are deaf !

  • beautiful song.....too bad he lifted the melody almost note for note directly from the classic English patriotic hymn "Jerusalem".....the version that starts "And did those feet in ancient times walk upon....etc. etc."

  • @ljdann1 This is simillar but 'note for note'?

  • were singing this song in chorus and everytime i cry. its such a touching song<3

  • in love with this song.. just..amazing.

  • in love with this song.. just..amazing.

  • Where is the love button???

  • and still i feel, i said too much . my silence is my self defense

  • The lyrics in this song is just perfect. Makes me cry everytime.

  • Always manages to bring those strong emotions and that piano is just singing along with him. Masterpiece.

  • can't stop listening to this song

  • Billy is a genius - this is amazing!

  • I'm pretty sure every choral nerd (said in the most approving way ever) has visited this site after singing some rendition of this song at some point in time. =]

  • ''But if my silence made you leave

Then that would be my worst mistake

So I will share this room with you

And you can have this heart to break''

  • God fucking dam it that add ruins the mood.

  • WOW !!!! what music what a voice what a artist !! billy joel !! :)

  • This should be the national-anthem of LoveLandia.

  • @Retrofanatic10 if you're talking about making babies, really??!

  • @Retrofanatic10 no way

  • @InnocenceExperience That was kind of stupid. Sorry about that.

  • @Retrofanatic10 its all right.

  • i want this played at my funeral

  • Been listening to him for so long, but I never watched any of his videos until recently...he does NOT look like I had pictured him.

  • @irethamandil how did you picture him?

  • one of the best songs ever written.

  • I sang this at my Esteddfod last week it was me and the pianist it was so nice to sing it to an Audience!!! love it xo

  • My most favorite Billy Joel song ever. So melancholy...but oh so beautiful. If this doesn't touch your heart...then you have no soul.

  • My girlfriend just broke up with me, and I've been listening to this song nonstop for the past hour. "But you can make decisions too, and you can have this heart to break." She did have this heart to break.

  • und auch das tut mir heute wohl....

  • is this live? or is it just edited to make it seem that way?

  • @chanchalarescue- I feel as it's from a live tour, perhaps the Storm Front tour in 1990? Didn't he have a few performances in Yankee Stadium that year too?

  • This song moves me everytime I listen to it, and the intensity of feelings received has never shnged since the first time. "And So It Goes" is simply 'sublime' in every aspect. One that is able to maintain its emotional charge; one that strikes us not because of beauty but wonder and awe. This song, which title was taken from another genius (Kurt Vonnegut) is great Art, and Billy, great Artist.

  • How does anyone "dislike" this song? It's amazing!

  • I'm not sure if billy has saved me tonight or not, but I'm not dead yet, so maybe he has. Good night everyone...

  • and 2:49 is so magical i get goosebumps every time i listen to this song

  • i love his voice in his video

  • Ahhh i remember playing this song in orchestra (: good times, and a wonderful song <3

  • I love this song! It gives me goosbumps every time I hear it.

  • who the fuck disliked this?

  • @92mascara People who hate music.

  • @NovemberPines *Correction* people who hate life. This song could bring a tear to a glass eye.

  • @92mascara LOL!! not I!! great song, just piano and voice!

  • I know everyone says this, but 16 people don't know what in the world they're talking about.

  • How i wish my parents or some figure in my life introduced these songs to me, when i was younger. Yes, I still enjoy and prefer songs from nowadays, but I love these as well. It's just hard and troublesome to look for songs like these nowadays

  • @StrawhatxLuffy I am one of the lucky ones, i grew up listening to Mr. Joel, and i'm really upset you didn't. His voice s comfort to me, it's the voice of my father, the voice of reason, the voice who reminds me who i am. I am 18 now, getting ready for life to really begin. And this music reminds me of substance, of purity, that is lost amongst people of my age. It brings me home.

  • @kombucha123 IM 14 and wished i grew up with Billy Joel instead with justen bever and the fake music people

  • @kombucha123 Oh, but you're still growing up if you're only 18 :)

  • @atnasomfg haha i know, but with the teenage peer pressure from some people my age to like the same music, fashion and so on, Billy joel reminds me that i have substance, and as i said, reminds me of who i am and where i come from.

  • @kombucha123 lovely thoughts....

  • @kombucha123 i was thinking to like but need to comment and say realy nice way of thinking . cheers from other part of the planet were the shit things happen

  • @TheRainforestt Thank you so much, your comment really made my day, and just now it turned to midnight :). Bad things are not happening where you are, because you are there.

  • @kombucha123 wow.... people just don't write like anymore.... go into songwriting and make a revival of great music with lyrics that actually meant something. I'd love to grow up in a generation that listens to music that actually encourages purity in youth, musical comfort, and substance. save my generation and the ones to follow

  • Marianas Trench (a band) did a cover for this last year. Its really really good.

  • Every graduating class chose this as one of their two the chorus sang at the ceremony. <3 it!

  • 2:50 epic crowd chant

  • Billy Joel's music can really strike a chord for me. Especially this song.

  • Not to be negative on such a quality video...but does anybody else find the arm waving of the audience to really take away from the affect of the song? It's just so ingenuine to me. Not just in this video but always.

  • @KrfNYC2 actually yeah, esp the guy 4 from the left lol

  • @PaulRay462 Are you serious?

  • @KrfNYC2 er...yes. Why?

  • @KrfNYC2 sorry I should have said "4 from the left at 2:48" - just my opinion!!

  • @PaulRay462 Oh yeah. I see him.

  • God this song still gives me shivers every time I hear it.
