How can you say the captain was drunk, even if it was his birthday, do you know that for a fact? Stop believing the propaganda you're fed by the NZ government.
The captain wouldn't have even been on duty at that time of the morning and would've been tucked up in his bunk . Rather like the government who were also caught napping in the days that followed.
The critical importance of this terrible tragedy must not be forgotten, In the current climate, those responsible NEED to be held accountable. We will all suffer, and it must be made known that to pollute on this scale will incur the full punishment of the peoples law.
WTF.. MSC - a shady greek outfit?? Get your facts right first. MSC is a liner Company. They dont even own this ship. And the nationality of the captain is not of importance. What an idiot you are. Go back to the to Whale Wars you prick and pirate the sea's
@leetyler2000 yes you are right. MSC does also run cruise liners, which dump their bilge oil into the ocean. in the last case they were fined US$10m in the US. And if follows a long list of environmentally marginal practices. they also run many container ships, just like the one that was run aground here in NZ. some vessel are leased and some they own. I don't think it makes much difference if they are leased or owned. they are still all run by MSC
Cheers for putting this together Pete, and for your efforts against the Japanese whalers. You are a national hero and are single-handedly making a difference. We will spread the word about this. Hopefully pressure is applied on the NZ government to the extent that the Greek government are forced to intervene. It's a tragedy that the National government did not act when it had the chance. I can only imagine how angry the locals must feel about it.
Laying blame doesnt help anything at this point, particularly when it is based mostly in assumption and rumour. I wonder if Pete Bethune will still be interested in Tauranga in a month or in two months and will be here helping to clean up the remnants once the media coverage has blown over.
@Mortalwonder so we should not lay blame on bastards that destroy our fucken beach? easy for you to say sitting in the US. so lets not lay blame on BP for the gulf oil spill then. and lets not lay blame on the japanese for their whaling in antarctica. and lets not lay blame on the chinese for taking all the rhino horn to give them stiffys. and why don't you hide behind a fake profile... oh you are.
@petebethune My name is Karen Armer and I live in Mt Maunganui, Tauranga. All Im saying is for this situation right now I think it is the time to focus on clean up and getting our beach back. Blame can be laid when we have the facts - or at least as close to as we can get.
This oil spill is a major catastrophe for us NZ'ers, the bay of plenty region is a beautiful area, and it strickens us with grief to see what is happening at the moment. But please don't go pointing fingers with racially undertoned comments. As fuseman stated, being filipino has nothing to do it, your comment alientates kiwi/filipinos who are willing to help in this diar situation. I don't hear you blaming the 'UK' for "BP's" oil spill????!
@Buzzytymezproduction oil rigs on the GOM are crewed by many nationalities. whereas in this case, the crew is filipino. you think it has nothing to do with it, but it has. these poorly paid and trained crews have become endemic in shipping, but they are cheap. which is why MSC have increasingly deployed them. they also have little regard for the environment. MSC had a number of ships fitted with "Magic pipes" to pump bilge oil into the ocean! last case was $10m fine. crew were all in on it
So why is the focus not on the corporation itself, instead it's "dodgy philipinos" and "dodgy Greek". (You wouldn't refer BP as a 'dodgy english' company now would you) Surely it should be about MSC utilising underqualified personnel, and cheap labour. Race-related gestures that you make come loaded, and as someone else pointed, detracts from your main objective and fuels an unbiased hate and distrust to a group of innocent people. Apart from that, kudos on your efforts thus far :)
@Buzzytymezproduction well the dodgy corporation is mentioned several times in the video. they, along with the crew, are responsible. Although it is unlikely they'll pay anything like the true cost of the cleanup and recovery operation.
What is the importance of nationality in this, Filipino, Greek or otherwise?
Your narration with racial undertones, rumor and conjecture does nothing for the environmental issue which you are trying to highlight and in fact detracts from it.
the actions could have been caused by the captain of the boat along with his crew. race has got nothing to do with it. individuals are responsible for it. the way you tag filipino and talk about it seems to be a bit much when oil spill accidents happen all over the world. this is exactly the attitude that has caused scare on tauranga and filipinos being verbally abused. This is all so tragic that has happened, but i hope race would be left out of it.
well it just so happens the captain was filipino. as was most of the crew. and between them, they ran the boat aground. or do you think it is just coincidence that the captain / crew were filipino? and the accident was caused by someone else?
@fuseman i am afraid so many vessels plying the seas these days have poorly paid filipino crews lacking training, lacking proper working conditions... and they are involved in many maritime problems. and that greek company has a long history of appalling environmental practices. they were fined $10m a few years ago for example for pumping bilge oil directly into the ocean. the fact they are greek allows them to generally get away with it.
@petebethune I still don't see what race has got to do with it? Anyone of any nationality can be underpaid and udnertrained. That's the fault of the mega corporation that they work for.
They are gonna try to cother this up don't let them. Lets put anonoums onto this governmint we must for stop them and get behind the Anti Wall Street movement and show these polical capitalist morons whos boss. This is what globalism dose it is all about money and the reil people always lose.Don't relie the law corts and politions we must march down the citiy streets in ANGER and clench our fists and demarnd change away from corperit poluters.
Don't like to be picky but giant shipping company MSC didn't own the ship, which incidentally I believe is a marginally seaworthy boat with rusting bulkheads and antiquated navigation gear. Morally of course this doesn't absolve MSC for chartering a crummy tub with low crewing standards but in a court of law I am sure they feel quite invincible. The real question remains "why did the Rena hit a well charted and famous reef near the entrance to the destination port?". Accident or convenience?
@VisionProductionsNZ at the start of the video he states that the minimum wage captain was intoxicated. I dont believe that chasing the shipping company to fulfill a moral obligation that to them they perceive as a 'loss of profit' would fix the problem at hand. I do however think that fast action is needed and money needs to be spent, fast and lots of it. To prevent any further damage. Recovery of the spent money by those found responsible can be chased later on in court. Wish i could help
Next time you should get your facts straight.
I understand where your coming from but any disaster regardless of who was at the helm is avoidable but do you think Kiwi Captains never run aground.
BTW the ship is not owned by MSC you will find that nearly all the MSC Container Vessels are on charter and most are in a pretty bad state of repair,
Why didn't the Port VTC monitoring the Vessel notify the Ship that they were standing into shallow water??? I'm sure they were Kiwi/Maori.
