Just a perfect voice....One of my favourite songs ever.Russell you have such passion and emotion in your voice....sheer brilliance ....what a great man.Love this video....thanks for sharing.
Definitely the guy has the inborn talent to sing opera but I don't think he really studied. He changes the color of his voice. But let me say that I enjoyed listening to his high natural notes. He has a gift. I know what real purists are saying that he is not a true opera singer. But in fairness to Russell, his talent is inborn. I enjoy his singing here.
Somebody told me he used to be a club singer, singing popular music, then there was a power cut, so in the dark he started singing opera as a joke, and everybody thought it was amazing. Maybe it was fate.
That's strange since my favourite classical composer was so poor when he died that he had a pauper's funeral. Music from the shows or from opera is a darn good start to a life of enjoyment of the wonderful music of the classical composers.
@ifuliki Yes but if you have been to a rubbish rough school like I did, that was run by hippies, all they do is to try to make the kids like ethnic music where all the immigrants come from and playing the bongos is about as far as they bother to teach. If somebody who looks more like a pop star sings classical music, it helps to make those not familiar with it take notice.
That wasa stupid mistake. My musical tastes are eclectis. I love a jolly good tune whether it be Schubert's Trout sung by the Wiebeesangerknaben or Music of the Night by Russell Watson. All I sk is that it be decently performed. Jussi Bjorling and Tom Joned are both favourtites of mine. And as for Toms Jones it is not because I am half Welsh
@SuzLa1 Good, but have you actually gone on to listen to any actual classical music (not just crossover) by actual opera singers? By that, I mean singers who sing in opera houses.
Look up Juan Diego Florez, and of course anything by Pavarotti, for a start.
@colino72 What do you mean by crossover music? Isn't the reason some music is more popular, because it's better? I don't listen to much foreign language music such as Italian because I can't understand it but I like Andrea Bocelli and I enjoyed Amore e musica when Russell Watson sang it. I don't see why music has to fit into a category as if somebody wants to sing it, they should. Freddie Mercury helped to make opera popular with younger listeners when he helped make Barcelona.
@SuzLa1 Of course I don't mean all of the most popular music is better as a lot from the USA is based on expensive advertising and hype for gullible teenagers to fall for, but I class whether music is good based on if it's still popular after a few years
@colino72 ey buddy. if i may just ask. . have you proven something yet in your ECLECTIC AND IMPECCABLE TALENT AND KNOW HOW OF THE CLASSICAL MUSIC. as that of the world recognition of watson? where have you performed and released your albums?
@iamric22 I have never claimed to have done so, and it is completely spurious and intellectually barren to claim that no-one can comment on something that they don't do themselves. As for performance, yes absolutely I have - as a keen amateur, and it is my main hobby. Does Watson have a good instrument? Yes. Is he an opera singer - no, because he has never sung in an opera. Good luck to him, though, and on the plus side, after listening to him I moved on to others, so I thank him for that.
We like this, his interpretation is theatrical, storeytelling, rich with feeling, and makes a difficult song much more full and imaginative. Cheers! :-)
Russell has many singing styles. He is also an impressionist and can change his voice from one style to another. He does sound rather like MC except on the higher notes. I d love to see him in Phantom!
I have to agree, this is a very old clip- thats why there are inconsistencies in his vocal tone. Im sure hed blow us away if he sang it now. His potential even back then was obvious.
Wonderful ! I heard Russell sing this when I saw him in Brighton in July and he capitivated me as he always does. Does anyone know when he is going to be on t.v. again. I watched every episode of "Last Choir Standing" and as I was hoping he did sing at the final. Do hope they get him to sign at the opening of the 2012 Olympics I was delighted to hear he had topped the Classical Singer Chart, so well deserved.
Funny - he changes his voice funny funny. Completely split personality. haha. He´s voice is great end fine. But all the changes in voice is pretty "not good"
I am absolutely devasted. This is an astounding version. The switches in range, to me, highlight the myriad emotions and behaviours: yearning, seduction, threat, supplication, loneliness and desperation etc. in this song. Wow. I am in tears. ( which makes typing hard)
Yes, I see where it sounds uneven, but everyone has to remember that, comparitively, he is a very new talent and new singer- cut him some slack. The song is otherwise very very powerful, in the captivating way it should be sung. The manner in which he sings it also makes this song, a very slow song, more captivating.
what a voice! I have seen phantom in the west end and this is way better than the last 3 "phantoms" which have performed this on the stage the current phantom is awful go and see him for a laugh he is only about 5ft tall
Very, very uneven. That's so annoying..It's like he is singing a duet with himself - "oh, I'll use the hoarse, mysterious tenor voice. No, the deep one...no, wait..."
Russell Watson is my favorite singer to date. I love his songs and his voice. Yet this is, in my opinion, a less than beautiful rendering of this song. The way he switches vocal styles is not pleasing (Va Pensiero is excellent in this regard). I do much prefer Michael Crawford's "Music of the Night."
Thanks Russell, beautiful

The first part sounds do much like Michael Crawford, then he does his classical tenor style. Perhaps this was in tribute to the original Phantom?
Not as good as Crawford, but better than Butler. I really like to hear this song (and many others by Lloyd Weber) sung by trained tenors or baritones.
