ed balls 2010 = michael portillo in 1997. governments become arrogant after a decade and instead of doing their best to improve the country they become obsessed with winning elections. i hate ed balls because he and gordon brown believe they are entitled to be in power forever. i hope the tories win and lib dems become main opposition. 5 more years of not so new labour would be terrible. think of your kids!!!!

Ed Balls typifies the smugness and arrogance that infests New Labour - the sooner him and his ilk are out of office the better. Enjoy it while you can Ed ...
@fodsaks Compare the path IDS took after he stepped down from the leadership of his party to the one chosen by Bliar: setting up the Centre for Social Justice and grafting away for years to gather the data necessary to understand Britain's social problems - that's selfless. Tony Blair on the other hand having served his time on the left has set out on to become as rich as he possibly can.
Balls is like a school yard bully who has lost the argument and tries to shout down anyone who dares try to speak against him. He needs a good slapping.
In the next election I hope we lose Balls and his equally despicable trough feeding, bubble headed wife, Yvette Cooper.
I think Ed Balls can single handedly destroy the labour party himself without Brown. Smear campaigns and a general persona of a creep...a PR nightmare...perhaps he will organise a Sheffield pre election 'do' 92 style, invite the equally dire pocket lining Kinnock along for a full suit of unelectable donkeys.
I hope he does. Socialism as a concept is alien to the British people, who developed classical liberalism under people like Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, Ricardo, Gladstone etc.
yeah there's never been any famous british socialists, like say, george orwell, or tony benn, have there? and its not like britain has ever elected a socialist party, like say, the old labour party, is it? and it isn't as if britain has a history of socialism with people like the tolpuddle martyrs and the diggers is it? i mean its not like marx lived in london or anything...
Your point is...? The Labour Party in the 20th century managed to get elected 3 times. The Conservatives were in power much of the 20th century, and Blair had to abandon socialism to get Labour electable.
Socialism is alien to us, because people haven't accepted Marx's ideas, or Orwell's. They tried it for 5 years after WW2, and elected a Tory government for 14 years afterwards, and for 18 years when socialism ultimately collapsed.
er, no, technically they were elected at least eight times. nice counting. of course you forget 'socialism' wasn't just tried for 5 years after WW2 (voted for in a massive landslide by the way - the almost 12 million who voted for labour in 1945 wasn't topped until 1992, when the population was almost 10 million larger) but was incorporated by the conservatives and upheld until thatcher demolished it. except even she didn't completely. do you think the NHS is NOT socialist?
Oh certainly they voted for it, and they never voted for it again. Mr Wilson was very ambivalent to Clause 4, and Blair abolished it completely, leading to a landslide victory in 97.
13,500,000 voted for Mrs T in 1979, 13,000,000 in 1983,
13,700,000 in 1987
14,400,000 in 1922.
Labour has never polled higher.
The NHS is socialist. It is why I don't use it. The fact is socialism is alien to this country.
so i guess you never went to a state school either. or use public transport. or the postal service (or, if you take the argument to its logical conclusion, public roads, the police, fire service, or emergency healthcare).
let me guess, mummy and daddy pick up the bill? that's very enterprising of you. really says something about meritocracy doesn't it?
Home schooled. Private car. We don't use the postal service because we email. We don't buy things over the internet because we shop. Never been in a fire. And roads have always been here. They weren't a socialist invention you twerp.
And I pay my own way because I work.
Is stupidity something you work at or is it a gift?
who do you think builds and maintains roads? its the government you cretin. being a public, freely usable good there is no motivation for any person or company to build their own road unless it is for private use. therefore the government has to provide. the same goes for every public service. obviously home schooling produced the same result in you as it does with most - brainwashed idiocy. does your family live like deranged hermits because they think living in a society makes you socialist?
And where does government get its money from you cretin? Us. The taxpayer... the money we work for. The government doesn't have to provide anything. We only need government for defence and enforcing property rights.
Home schooling worked well for me. I scored 148 on my IQ test. I have scored 4A*'s, 5 A's and a B in my GCSE's, 4 A's in my A levels and I am going to Oxford to study PPE. I'll bet you are some jealous, envious socialist tosser who believes in something for nothing.
yes well done for realising that the government gets money from taxes. the fact remains that the 'taxpayer' would not provide these things on their own.
a modern state existing without policing, emergency services, public roads and street lighting, subsidised businesses, etc, is a naive utopian dream. libertarianism is a vision far more 'alien' to the british than socialism. what you are after is presumably somewhere nice and 'free' like singapore.
No it isn't. Tony Blair only managed to get elected by tricking the British people into believing he believed in free markets. Margaret Thatcher was an economic libertarian, and she won three straight landslides.
Private enterprise can provide healthcare, street lighting etc. And it can provide it much cheaper because of competition. If we abolish taxes, we will be able to choose our own services.
You are a totalitarian statist who believes you should choose what people have/
please explain how you have managed to solve the eternal problem of market failure in areas such as road building and maintenance, street lighting, sewer systems, water, electricity, radio, television and internet/phone line provision, pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, traffic congestion, policing and the prison system, to say nothing of the more debatable issues of education, healthcare, and emergency services. hint: the answer is not 'poll tax'.
Markets don't fail, governments do. Governments and central banks control the levels of credit and money in the economy, causing boom and bust.
Contrary to what you may believe, businesses take great pride in their product. It attracts investment flows and consumers. Sweden has a supply side education system which is excellent. Sky is a private entertainment system that is infinitely better than the BBC.
you clearly don't know what market failure is, and i can't be arsed to give an AS economics lesson to someone who claims they're going to oxford.
adam smith, etc, were important economists in their own right but there are obvious problems to their work - for example political economy is derived from private property, it doesn't explain it. they treated property as some kind of primordial human condition. their ideas are outdated at best.
Natural resources aren't overexploited. Global warming is a left wing lie. The internet is already provided by private enterprise, so you are a hypocrite by benefitting from capitalism despite criticising it. Education can be privately supplied, as can healthcare. Just abolish taxation and let the market create competition, thus lowering the cost and creating better healthcare because businesses seek consumers.
'global warming is a left wing lie' - priceless. and i suppose every climate scientist who supports it is a communist, huh? the US recently released high res spy satellite pictures showing vast reductions in arctic ice sheets caused by global warming. damn reds!
education and healthcare can be privately supplied, but not to everyone. would you just allow these people to die? without at least a minimal welfare state providing free education, for example, there is no equality of opportunity. without equality of opportunity there is no meritocracy. you might as well support feudalism. that is the real legacy of thatcherism - soaring levels of inequality, massive unemployment and poverty, rising crime.
The poll tax was a good idea but badly implemented. It was the victim of a left wing smear campaign, with monstrous hypocrites like Tony Benn campaigning against it, despite him being a dirty tax dodging bastard. Tony Benn claims to represent the working classes. I wonder how he does that from his country estate in Sussex, Stansgate Estate, and his mansion in Holland Park, one of the most exclusive areas in London, not exactly Croydon or Hackney.
sure, dodge the argument and just make a baseless ad hominem attack on a famous socialist. makes you look very clever. except you chose the wrong guy. tony benn used to be a lord. he renounced his title just so he could stand as an MP. he's hardly a tax dodger but you must realise how hilariously hypocritical it is for someone who supports the tories to attack others on the basis of their inherited wealth. just look at the tory front bench.
Actually, he does it by getting down on the streets and actually meeting voters face to face. I meet him every year at the Glastonbury festival and he is one of the only politicians prepared to face questions face to face with the public. He is a true political icon and its a shame that others couldnt follow in his footstops. And a massive LOL that you think that poll tax was anything but ridiculous. If it was a good idea, it would have worked. End of.
blair genuinely did believe in free markets. my god, are you really so deluded that you think blair was a socialist? how will the government pay for defence and enforcing property rights if tax is abolished? how will people be protected from fraud, robbery, violence, etc? would you just leave the those who are 'naturally unemployed' to die? whats more, how can you have true capitalism with no protection from monopolies or other forms of government nudging that keep it alive?
monopolies may occasionally be helped by government - because economies of scale make large companies easier and cheaper for government to work with - but they are not created by it. without some form of protection against monopoly, large companies such as microsoft, coca cola, walmart etc, would long since have taken over their entire market. once they have done this they can easily crush potential competition and rack up their own prices. how would this be prevented?
Well done Ian, he took Gordon's boot boy to the cleaners. And no you will never be labour leader Ed. It was you who took away the supervisory role away from the Bank of England which contributed to financial disaster.
Young master Balls, hateful of everyone who made fun of his stupid name, decided to join the Labour party and wreck the whole country.
Vindicitve little hypocrite - claims to represent the working class yet refuses to live in his own constituency because the housing's too down market and the schools are shit - crazy given he's in charge of education!
You shouldn't have to ask that question, but I will obligingly answer. He's arrogant, aloof and so punchable. Even Jack Straw threatened to punch him, and Jack Straw is one of the few likeable members of the Labour Party. He's also a vicious bastard who will stop at nothing to further his political position e.g. his dealings with Damien Macbride.
I read that story about Straw, I think in the Times, although correct me if it wasn't. I also read the stories saying that it was "garbage". It was also the Times that claimed that the whole smear campaign, which I found utterly contemptable like everyone else, was the work of Balls. I am reluctant to take the word of a Murdoch newspaper over such matters. I have already acknowledged his ineptitude, but he is not the first politician on either side to display arrogance and allofness.
Fair point. Murdoch is a snake no doubt. He supports whoever is popular in order to sell newspapers. But on the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised that somebody wanted to punch Ed Balls. His constituency is close to mine, and he is not popular at all. He claims with his wife nearly £500,000 when they both have MP and Cabinet salaries. The only reason he became an MP is because of Brown's patronage and the fact that in Wakefield, a paedophile would get elected if they were Labour members.
It's a great shame that there are constituencies like that, where MPs can just be parachuted in and expect a large majority. I mean look at the defector Shaun Woodward, a man who's so left wing he owns property worth about 10 million quid! It devalues the whole process for both sides in my view. For me the issue of Murdoch goes beyond politics. You're right, he is a total snake, and he has polluted the British press more than any other figure in our history.
An on Ed Balls, I'm going to reserve judgement on him for now. You clearly know more about him than I do and it would be wrong for me to make a judgement without knowing very much about him. I'm going to continue keeping my eye on everything!
I think Balls is probably one of the most vile politicians ever of any party, the man is repulsive in his manner and policies. A disgusting man and is a real "Poster Boy" for Labour!! Revolting!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
IDS has failed in his political career and now massages what is left of his ego by coming on shows like the Daily Politics and sniping away at the party who destroyed his dream. I feel sorry for him becuase I can't imagine how awful it would feel to be in his position.
Ed Balls, a champaigne socialist. Criticises grammar schools, yet went to a private school. His father criticised academic selection, yet sent the young Balls to private school. He, like Brown, always referes to the previous government, instead of concentrating on his own. Just another fool
Apparently most of the Cabinet loathe Ed Balls. Jack Straw is supposed to have threatened to thump Balls during one Cabinet meeting.
If that's true, I think Straw let everyone down. A decent man wouldn't have just "threatened" Balls. A decent person would have just hit him anyway then asked if anyone else would like to join in.
Balls is such a cretin; and a total asshole for talking over IDS. Balls is supposed to be moron Brown's top adviser, no wonder Labour is in a worse situation than when Michael Foot was leader.
Ed Balls certainly has a way of bringing out the ire in people...I saw Duncan Smith in a much more positive new way after he went for Balls like this. Ed Balls is everything anybody needs to know about what is wrong with the Labour Party.
I wouldnt trust Balls to look after my cat let alone trust him with trying to run the country. He does look like a nervous psycho come to think of it.
Because nobody else wants to get involved thats why. Getting involved in politics Lib/Lab/Con is a waste of time. They are there to give an illusion of choice - in short YOU DONT. Look at the people and parties the corporate media dont mention and then you will find that somewhere in that area lies the truth.

How come Ian Duncan Smith only got good AFTER he quit the Tory leadership?
fodsaks 2 years ago 2
@fodsaks Compare the path IDS took after he stepped down from the leadership of his party to the one chosen by Bliar: setting up the Centre for Social Justice and grafting away for years to gather the data necessary to understand Britain's social problems - that's selfless. Tony Blair on the other hand having served his time on the left has set out on to become as rich as he possibly can.

Ed balls, wants to ban bnp/racism from our schools? what about islamic schools! that have teachings from the koran,
which are inherrently intolerant, anti-semitic, discriminatory, racist
and supremacist, and much of the time taught as such at these schools,(as they are only following the texts, which are refered to continually)
you cannot be anti racism/discrimination on one hand
but an apologetic appeaser FOR racism/discrimination on the other

Balls is like a school yard bully who has lost the argument and tries to shout down anyone who dares try to speak against him. He needs a good slapping.
In the next election I hope we lose Balls and his equally despicable trough feeding, bubble headed wife, Yvette Cooper.
moorlandhunter 2 years ago
I think Ed Balls can single handedly destroy the labour party himself without Brown. Smear campaigns and a general persona of a creep...a PR nightmare...perhaps he will organise a Sheffield pre election 'do' 92 style, invite the equally dire pocket lining Kinnock along for a full suit of unelectable donkeys.
ukeuro23 2 years ago 3
I hope he does. Socialism as a concept is alien to the British people, who developed classical liberalism under people like Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, Ricardo, Gladstone etc.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
yeah there's never been any famous british socialists, like say, george orwell, or tony benn, have there? and its not like britain has ever elected a socialist party, like say, the old labour party, is it? and it isn't as if britain has a history of socialism with people like the tolpuddle martyrs and the diggers is it? i mean its not like marx lived in london or anything...
bobzilla211 2 years ago
Your point is...? The Labour Party in the 20th century managed to get elected 3 times. The Conservatives were in power much of the 20th century, and Blair had to abandon socialism to get Labour electable.
Socialism is alien to us, because people haven't accepted Marx's ideas, or Orwell's. They tried it for 5 years after WW2, and elected a Tory government for 14 years afterwards, and for 18 years when socialism ultimately collapsed.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
er, no, technically they were elected at least eight times. nice counting. of course you forget 'socialism' wasn't just tried for 5 years after WW2 (voted for in a massive landslide by the way - the almost 12 million who voted for labour in 1945 wasn't topped until 1992, when the population was almost 10 million larger) but was incorporated by the conservatives and upheld until thatcher demolished it. except even she didn't completely. do you think the NHS is NOT socialist?
bobzilla211 2 years ago
Oh certainly they voted for it, and they never voted for it again. Mr Wilson was very ambivalent to Clause 4, and Blair abolished it completely, leading to a landslide victory in 97.
13,500,000 voted for Mrs T in 1979, 13,000,000 in 1983,
13,700,000 in 1987
14,400,000 in 1922.
Labour has never polled higher.
The NHS is socialist. It is why I don't use it. The fact is socialism is alien to this country.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
so i guess you never went to a state school either. or use public transport. or the postal service (or, if you take the argument to its logical conclusion, public roads, the police, fire service, or emergency healthcare).
let me guess, mummy and daddy pick up the bill? that's very enterprising of you. really says something about meritocracy doesn't it?
bobzilla211 2 years ago
Home schooled. Private car. We don't use the postal service because we email. We don't buy things over the internet because we shop. Never been in a fire. And roads have always been here. They weren't a socialist invention you twerp.
And I pay my own way because I work.
Is stupidity something you work at or is it a gift?
Mickmars90 2 years ago
who do you think builds and maintains roads? its the government you cretin. being a public, freely usable good there is no motivation for any person or company to build their own road unless it is for private use. therefore the government has to provide. the same goes for every public service. obviously home schooling produced the same result in you as it does with most - brainwashed idiocy. does your family live like deranged hermits because they think living in a society makes you socialist?
bobzilla211 2 years ago
And where does government get its money from you cretin? Us. The taxpayer... the money we work for. The government doesn't have to provide anything. We only need government for defence and enforcing property rights.
Home schooling worked well for me. I scored 148 on my IQ test. I have scored 4A*'s, 5 A's and a B in my GCSE's, 4 A's in my A levels and I am going to Oxford to study PPE. I'll bet you are some jealous, envious socialist tosser who believes in something for nothing.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
yes well done for realising that the government gets money from taxes. the fact remains that the 'taxpayer' would not provide these things on their own.
a modern state existing without policing, emergency services, public roads and street lighting, subsidised businesses, etc, is a naive utopian dream. libertarianism is a vision far more 'alien' to the british than socialism. what you are after is presumably somewhere nice and 'free' like singapore.
bobzilla211 2 years ago
No it isn't. Tony Blair only managed to get elected by tricking the British people into believing he believed in free markets. Margaret Thatcher was an economic libertarian, and she won three straight landslides.
Private enterprise can provide healthcare, street lighting etc. And it can provide it much cheaper because of competition. If we abolish taxes, we will be able to choose our own services.
You are a totalitarian statist who believes you should choose what people have/
Mickmars90 2 years ago
please explain how you have managed to solve the eternal problem of market failure in areas such as road building and maintenance, street lighting, sewer systems, water, electricity, radio, television and internet/phone line provision, pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, traffic congestion, policing and the prison system, to say nothing of the more debatable issues of education, healthcare, and emergency services. hint: the answer is not 'poll tax'.
bobzilla211 2 years ago
Markets don't fail, governments do. Governments and central banks control the levels of credit and money in the economy, causing boom and bust.
Contrary to what you may believe, businesses take great pride in their product. It attracts investment flows and consumers. Sweden has a supply side education system which is excellent. Sky is a private entertainment system that is infinitely better than the BBC.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
you clearly don't know what market failure is, and i can't be arsed to give an AS economics lesson to someone who claims they're going to oxford.
adam smith, etc, were important economists in their own right but there are obvious problems to their work - for example political economy is derived from private property, it doesn't explain it. they treated property as some kind of primordial human condition. their ideas are outdated at best.
bobzilla211 2 years ago
Natural resources aren't overexploited. Global warming is a left wing lie. The internet is already provided by private enterprise, so you are a hypocrite by benefitting from capitalism despite criticising it. Education can be privately supplied, as can healthcare. Just abolish taxation and let the market create competition, thus lowering the cost and creating better healthcare because businesses seek consumers.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
'global warming is a left wing lie' - priceless. and i suppose every climate scientist who supports it is a communist, huh? the US recently released high res spy satellite pictures showing vast reductions in arctic ice sheets caused by global warming. damn reds!
bobzilla211 2 years ago
education and healthcare can be privately supplied, but not to everyone. would you just allow these people to die? without at least a minimal welfare state providing free education, for example, there is no equality of opportunity. without equality of opportunity there is no meritocracy. you might as well support feudalism. that is the real legacy of thatcherism - soaring levels of inequality, massive unemployment and poverty, rising crime.
bobzilla211 2 years ago
The poll tax was a good idea but badly implemented. It was the victim of a left wing smear campaign, with monstrous hypocrites like Tony Benn campaigning against it, despite him being a dirty tax dodging bastard. Tony Benn claims to represent the working classes. I wonder how he does that from his country estate in Sussex, Stansgate Estate, and his mansion in Holland Park, one of the most exclusive areas in London, not exactly Croydon or Hackney.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
sure, dodge the argument and just make a baseless ad hominem attack on a famous socialist. makes you look very clever. except you chose the wrong guy. tony benn used to be a lord. he renounced his title just so he could stand as an MP. he's hardly a tax dodger but you must realise how hilariously hypocritical it is for someone who supports the tories to attack others on the basis of their inherited wealth. just look at the tory front bench.
bobzilla211 2 years ago
Actually, he does it by getting down on the streets and actually meeting voters face to face. I meet him every year at the Glastonbury festival and he is one of the only politicians prepared to face questions face to face with the public. He is a true political icon and its a shame that others couldnt follow in his footstops. And a massive LOL that you think that poll tax was anything but ridiculous. If it was a good idea, it would have worked. End of.
binstig 2 years ago
It was. It was badly implemented and ill thought out. But the principle of paying based on services used is a good one.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
blair genuinely did believe in free markets. my god, are you really so deluded that you think blair was a socialist? how will the government pay for defence and enforcing property rights if tax is abolished? how will people be protected from fraud, robbery, violence, etc? would you just leave the those who are 'naturally unemployed' to die? whats more, how can you have true capitalism with no protection from monopolies or other forms of government nudging that keep it alive?
bobzilla211 2 years ago
No he didn't. He was a third way social democrat. Social democrats believe in corporatism, not capitalism.
A local sales tax can be used to fund defence and law. It's simple.
Monopolies are created by government. It is the reason why big business loves government because it helps them monopolise the marketplace.
Mickmars90 2 years ago
monopolies may occasionally be helped by government - because economies of scale make large companies easier and cheaper for government to work with - but they are not created by it. without some form of protection against monopoly, large companies such as microsoft, coca cola, walmart etc, would long since have taken over their entire market. once they have done this they can easily crush potential competition and rack up their own prices. how would this be prevented?
bobzilla211 2 years ago
Well done Ian, he took Gordon's boot boy to the cleaners. And no you will never be labour leader Ed. It was you who took away the supervisory role away from the Bank of England which contributed to financial disaster.

flymogram 2 years ago
You shouldn't have to ask that question, but I will obligingly answer. He's arrogant, aloof and so punchable. Even Jack Straw threatened to punch him, and Jack Straw is one of the few likeable members of the Labour Party. He's also a vicious bastard who will stop at nothing to further his political position e.g. his dealings with Damien Macbride.
Mickmars90 2 years ago 5
I read that story about Straw, I think in the Times, although correct me if it wasn't. I also read the stories saying that it was "garbage". It was also the Times that claimed that the whole smear campaign, which I found utterly contemptable like everyone else, was the work of Balls. I am reluctant to take the word of a Murdoch newspaper over such matters. I have already acknowledged his ineptitude, but he is not the first politician on either side to display arrogance and allofness.
flymogram 2 years ago
Mickmars90 2 years ago 4
It's a great shame that there are constituencies like that, where MPs can just be parachuted in and expect a large majority. I mean look at the defector Shaun Woodward, a man who's so left wing he owns property worth about 10 million quid! It devalues the whole process for both sides in my view. For me the issue of Murdoch goes beyond politics. You're right, he is a total snake, and he has polluted the British press more than any other figure in our history.
flymogram 2 years ago 2
An on Ed Balls, I'm going to reserve judgement on him for now. You clearly know more about him than I do and it would be wrong for me to make a judgement without knowing very much about him. I'm going to continue keeping my eye on everything!

dragonlee90 3 years ago 4
Apparently most of the Cabinet loathe Ed Balls. Jack Straw is supposed to have threatened to thump Balls during one Cabinet meeting.
If that's true, I think Straw let everyone down. A decent man wouldn't have just "threatened" Balls. A decent person would have just hit him anyway then asked if anyone else would like to join in.
