Great song dont knwo why most people call angel eyes his best hit his cover of ole buttermilk sky is amazing and linda is one the best songs i ever heard
I'm a fan... no doubt. Rooted up a Hi Lo's LP from the Old Man's collection and was smitten... But I especially dig the dark socks, wing tips, bermudas and sports coat... Now I know what inspired his lawn mowing ensemble!
Imagine: I wrote a high school term paper on Matt Dennis, Anita O'Day, and June Christy in 1957. It was - back then - an avante garde thing to to do. I still remember Dennis's "Junior and Julie," which I hope someone will post. I've never heard it since the "Plays and Sings" album. I like him better than Sinatra or Bennett; he was a better improvisor and had a richer, jazz-inflected vibrato. His "Angel Eyes" is the definitive performance.
Here here, the old West Coast jazz sound was the most. I too dig Dennis as well as Cy Coleman--who were both superb on the piano, singing and song-writing. In fact I just posted Matt Dennis' rendition of "Angel Eyes" today (just mosey on over to my channel for a listen). I will definitely be putting down some more Dennis...
@whitetigermoon The short guy in the hi los was a vocal arranger for the association and jim yester the guy from the association said he liked matt dennis songs
@whitetigermoon I love your grandfather's music and I smile everytime I hear him sing "Will You Still Be Mine." I learned to play piano because of his teachings. You were lucky to have him in your life!
That's Matt Dennis? He's cute! Also wrote Everything Happens To Me.. and Violets For Your Furs, and the Night We Called It a Day. Didn't know he sang or looked like that!
one of my favorite lp albums in the 50's was Matt Dennis's. He wrote Angel Eyes. He also sings ACottage For Sale. I also love the Hi Lo's, along with the Four Freshmen who were on top of the charts
