Thanks for sampling this song- really. It is one of THE most versatile blues harmonica tunes ever recorded for one thing, way ahead of its time. Another thing that it is one of a few instances of any blues harmonica played in the key of F (Mr. Downchild-also Rice Miller-is another), Rice Miller is perhaps the only artist to record in that key, whereas MOST harmonica blues only in either C,D, E, G, A or Bb. Not even the Walters (Little/Horton) that I know of played F.
> one of a few instances of any blues harmonica played in the key of F
I'm actually using an "E" harmonica here (cross harp, so I'm in the key of B).
> Rice Miller is perhaps the only artist to record [using an F harp]
Hmmm, well, yes ... I don't know of any other harp tunes using an F harp. And it happens to be that my favorite harp playing by Miller is in the song "Once Upon a Time" (watch?v=3ukxPeAE6E0), and he's using an F harp (key of C).
Regrettably, I have no skills in harp tutorials ... but if you want to check out a *great* harmonica instructor, look up Adam Gussow's channel - his YouTube name is KudzuRunner.
Hi Andrew. I picked up the harp sometime in the early 1990s, when I used to work in Manhattan. Back then I would practice for about 20 minutes every day (for about ten years) while walking back & forth from the subway.
> are you using a combination of tongue-blocking and puckering (i presume)?
Puckering only. I actually don't know how to tongue-block yet! There are lots of things on my harmonica To Do list ... but at present, whatever free time I have is consumed by my writing. (My "musician" YouTube channel = ToddGates; my "author" channel = ToddAllenGates.)
