The Japanese creators of this show had a real hard on for the Yamato. Yeah, let's turn the old girl into a space battleship. It was only bombed, torpedoed, capsized, exploded and sunk to the bottom of the ocean in about a hundred pieces. Sounds like an easy fix. The battleship Missouri would have been a better choice.
Remember, this was a show made in Japan for Japanese audiences. Yamato was the largest battleship ever built--bigger than the Iowa class, and for the creators of the show a real point of pride. No other ship, and certainly no other concept than Yamato would have been considered. Certainly not the American battleship where the surrender was signed.
Yamato Spaceship was - of course - an entire new ship, built in secret, from inside out, but why? The symbol!!!
"Japanese castles were destroyed and rebuild over and over again, but keeping the same name, the idea, the spirit!"
-> Show basic idea: a single battleship, defending their home from thecnologicaly superior aliens that were using radioactive weapons, sounds familiar after Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
@rich2365 Ah but the Missouri didnt go out with quite an unforgettable end did it? Besides the Idea of a ship that never had a chance getting a second chance in a whole new league is just cooler!
Anyway america was completely destroyed in the series since it was the main power of earth so the Galilons woulve had to take it out quickly before any real counter attack could be made
I miss this show. I watched it as a 5th grader over 30 years ago and it still fascinates me today. I wish it was on so my son and I can watch it together.

The whole idea of turning a battleship into spaceship was pretty ridiculous, but DAMN was it awesome!
