Dr. Amy, I came across your website a few months ago and since then it has become my Bible. Your defense of government is very accurate and thoughtful. Thank you for providing this alternate view of the frequently-maligned "big government" ideal in this country and allowing the American people to look at it in a different way than what we are often told by the media.
Its good to see that there are people out there that realise the necessity ofBig Government an understand its virtues in a very sincere manner, and not just as a knee-jerk reaction when the private sector tanks.
I find it funny that even though we're sending over the US military to Haiti in good numbers, people aren't talking about how important it is to pay your taxes in full. In fact, even for all the bad it has done, the government is much better equipped to deal with any number of crises. Kindness alone just doesn't cut it.
Confucious once said that the king having the people's trust is more important than winning in battle or being able to feed his people, for without the people's trust, the king cannot solve anything.
I tend to automatically grumble and groan when I hear about the bailouts and such, but then I think about it and I can understand why collective(i.e. government) programs are needed if we want to keep the complexity of our current society. This video was pretty good at making that same point.
What reality are you in? The last time the economy tanked was NOW, after eight years of Bush and Twelve years of Republican Congressional rule. And no, all the girls don't want you.
5 stars, we need more of this to counter the Neo-Con garbage...and keep it with a comedic flair...perfect example of the differences between free thinkers(comedy) and sheep (fear)
Before big government, 90% of people didn't have a pot to piss in. The peasants paid all the taxes, raised all the crops for a pittance, spent 1/3 of their time doing free corvee labor, got whatever "justice" the landlord felt like dispensing in his court, and mostly just starved.
Thank you for this excellent piece! People need to be aware of all the GOOD things that the gov't does. The example about coal mining accidents and child mining labor is perfect. For decades,1880-1920, the AVERAGE number of mining accidents deaths PER YEAR in the US was 1,500. Big business always puts profit above people. Gov't regulations are necessary to maintain a middleclass. Imagine America without social security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, veterans affairs, OSHA, etc. Nice video!

Great Vid!!!
Tax Cuts = Lack of ability of government to serve the people/common good.
Their are only two kinds of people who really believe in small government: Rich people and fools. Same goes for Republicans...

The trick to government is making it big enough to ensure opportunity for all, but not so big that it hinders freedoms. I loved this video. Genius.
