  • I just came across this video and I can't stop watching it. No words can describe it. Couldn't care less about his open passaggio. This is interstellar! Bravo Maestro!!!

  • superb....so much intensity and honesty in one performance.....truly one of the greats

  • One of the greatest masterclasses in facial acting you will ever see. The camera stays on his face throughout, and everything is expressed through the face and the voice. It is, I must say, perfection, and thanks so much for showing it. I have just sung my first Falstaff, and learned so much from Gobbi's performances. We can't act like that now, but , by God, we can learn and use his style

  • When I was a kid of 13, 50 years ago, I saw a film with Gobbi. That was the beginning of my passion for opera. He was not only the voice, but also the great actor. One of the greatest baritones of all time.

  • Il più grande! Tito Gobbi, il più grande!

    La migliore interpretazione.

    Eccellente sotto ogni profilo

  • we are in the presence of greatness. All bow!

  • WOW!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing this!!!

  • E poi? E poi?

  • I´m speechless. Thank you very much.

  • Who is the conductor?

  • Charles Mackerras, nel 1957.

  • assolutamente magnifico!

  • A grand presence on the stage. Immense talent, fluently dramatic, very expressive, great voice, sweeps you away! He's my fave in opera. I'm speechless, well just a little. Thanks barwyton for bringing this video to the public.

  • Gobbi è un grande!

  • When Tito Gobbi is on stage....He IS that character......Scarpia; Iago; Rigoletto; or whoever..........Great Baritone, Great Actor. There is, and never will be another artist like him.... He may be 'gone' but his voice will live forever. Thank You, Mr Gobbi

  • Where is this passion and voice today? Some of you experts can direct me here.

  • My dear sir...in not any place...this art, this passion, this magnificent spirit is extinguished long time ago...

It's a sad thing...but..it's so.show biz has killed true beauty.

  • Whoa, I meant to say baritone! Embarrassed...

  • What a magnificent, delightful, lusty performance! What an actor and tenor. Unbelievable. I saw this the other night on "Classic Arts Showcase", and was mesmerized. I'm not an opera man, but this just might hook me. Truly expressionistic and over the top but completely appropriate. And I love the chiaroscuro lighting, it makes it even more extraordinary. Kudos for everyone involved.

  • I first saw Gobbi as sing Scarpia at the Old Met in 1963. Opposite La Tabaldi as Tosca. Been an opera fanatic ever since. I'd use the word "intensity" here rather than expressionistic. That's what it's about intensity.

  • Yeah, that's it ! He IS Jago. Seems as if Verdi wrote this role especially for him. Have compared it to a lot of great singers... but only this one matches perfectly. Mr. Gobbi: thank you so much ! This is one of the greatest performaces I've ever heard or seen. Unbelievable !

  • What an actor! What a voice! He was my favorite baritone from my teen-age years--still is. Nobody else could get that snarly.

  • Wow!

  • Il miglior Jago di sempre! Che attore, che voce!!!

  • Un jago formidabile, una interpretazione stupenda. Che dire bellissimo

  • He was incredible!

  • I'm not sure if this is part of the Otello with Del Monaco in the title role, but you can get THAT video from the Bel Canto Society 800-347-5056 (if it's still good)

  • Terrific! After hearing this aria many times on CD it's wonderful to see it on video too. Makes my day.

    ;- )

  • P.S. Gobbi had some of the most espressive eyebrows I've ever seen!

  • Looking more closely, I can see that the voice track is not in synch with the video; is this the fault of the technology, or was the voice track recored separately?

  • Amazing performance but one that I suspect has been created by mouthing the words to a preexisting vocal track. Also a mention of the conductor would be nice.

  • The definitive Iago, no matter what you might think of the actual sound of his instrument or his too open way of singing the passaggio. Gobbi INHABITED all of the characters he performed; he even made SHARPLESS interesting! He owned many roles, and there are some phrases in opera in which I only hear him as the benchmark.

  • che espressività! Da brividi...

  • This video was on Youtube and I took them to my favourite:) and now Youtube show this as mine.

  • The definitive Iago of the 20th century perhaps. Gobbi in his prime here - but where did you find this video? Is it commercially available? Please add any more Gobbi material. I'd dearly love to see any film clips of his 'Simon Boccanegra', if they exist.

  • Beautiful voice,tremendous evilness...dramatically PERFECT!!!!!!

God!In these days I can`t find an acceptable version of this aria!!!!!!!
