Tidal waves are caused by the moons gravitational pull on the earth. Even the sun imparts a small percentage of that. So if the moon was to suddenly dissapear we would still have tides, but nothing like what you see in this video.

It definitely is not fake. The guys name is Parsons, don't remember his first name but I think it's Mike, and there was a short one-page story about it in Sports Illustrated.
