  • I've been watching this due to Bryce and i kinda love the film as it's oh,i've never seen such a simple (set, etc.) film being so profound and good, woah, thumbs up!

  • know your enemy.

  • Why cant i find this movie anywhere in English online this SUCKS

  • They slaughtered a donkey for "dramatic" purposes in this movie but edited from the movie, then John C Reilly quit in protest. This movie didn't pass the Animal Humane Association "No animals were harmed in the making of this film".

  • not as good as dogville

  • When the hell "Washington" will be released ! I'm so excited to see the last act of Lars von Trier's trilogy !

  • Bryce is a amazing discovery but nicole kidman far more "fit"..you know?

Anyway, i just love the music. who composed that?

  • Why Nicole Kidman didn't play the sequel of Dogville?

  • I loved Dogville, but this seemed so bleak and boring. Dont get me wrong, the concept is genius; I just didnt enjoy it, until the very end.

  • Von Trier is a fucking heartless asshole. I'm happy that John C. Reilly walked off this set because of that poor donkey. Making an animal suffer and slowly bleed to death like that is fucking sick, even if they did get it from a vet who had scheduled it for death anyways. And before you call me a PETA freak, I think PETA is evil. They euthanize more animals than they save and they're money whores.

  • @CarmelitaLeFink They killed a donkey, yes but they didn't make it slowly bleed to death. I personally don't support the killing of animals, but they weren't exactly doing it for fun or in a sadistic manner. It was an old donkey that they were euthanising.

  • Was this filmed as a play? It seems to take place on a set.

  • no.. it's a "dogme" movie.. wich is a very low budget movie made very artisticly.

  • @stickmand123

Isn't the word dogma? anyways just as dogville, manderlay is not a dogma movie since it lacks one of the requeriments of such movies, that is: In Dogma movies, everything we on the screen has to be real. They can't use sets. Hence, manderlay is NOT a dogma movie.

  • Im sorry, i didn't know the word in english, cause here it's called "dogme"

    you're probably right.. idk

  • @chatelazo Dude, Von Trier INVENTED the dogma rules...

  • @stickmand123 Wrong. A dogme doesn't mean that it's a low budget movie, it's about the way they film and only use natural effects/sounds etc... there are a couple of rules for dogme.

  • @Eschutaz I know, but the rules makes it almost impossible to be not low budget :b

  • u are afraid of true,,, and this film is not about slavery ...is about how people had change living in america..white and black....if u watch the first part dogvile u will understand.....but i doubt ...this movie is not for dumb people who love superman or spiderman

  • What wimps the Danes of our age have become! No wonder that now even the brutish minions of the vile Camel Merchant Cult dare to insult and menace them! No Beowulf would come and aid those wimps, who dare to call themselves Danes! For what is this trash? Rewriting the post War of Secession (just because someone does win a war does no make him the righteous war party!) history in the US? One needs only to remember how the valiant general Sherman has subdued the South:

  • As his wimpy soldiers were unable to break the staunch resistance of the ever diminishing Southern armies even with vast numbers, he abandoned regular warfare and ordered his troops to ravish the country side, thus becoming the first so-called modern general, for attacking the civil population instead of soldiers; the US continued with that valorous behaviour and rather used nuclear weapons than confronting the Japanese Samurai warriors on there home island...

  • ...not to mention that the reconstruction era, the forced return of the legally seceded Southern states into the now Northern union, was pretty much the opposite of what our unworthy Dane tries to convince the world! The movie The Birth of a Nation is by far more authentic than this one; I think this Dane should be forced to watch it so that he may learn not to annoy the world with his movies! As it is the same here than with modern non-art: Just because something is ugly does not make it art!

  • go to hell you idiot!

  • You are not very eloquent, are you?

  • How I wish Nicole would be in this. She was the best Grace ever ♥

  • One of the best films ever made about slavery and the psychic toxicity of its traumatic legacy. Too smart for most... One have to know and understand what the film is showing the viewer. One of the things I read and hear is that people think it about America but its also about the West in general. It's about Europe really and its "empire" (sic).

  • Where is the happy ending in Dogville?

In that Grace (the forgiving new testament christ figure) accepts that she is misguided and accepts her father's (old testament god figure) violent and vengeful manners?

  • for shinwalkexxx - how exactly does Dogville end with a happy ending???? Run me through it please?

As far as I remember, at the end Grace demands that the whole town be eliminated. In particular, she gives the order to have Vera look on at the murder of each of her kids. The film ends in a crescendo of violence: the town is burned and all its citizens are brutally murdered by the gangsters on direct order from Grace, with the exception of Tom, whom she kills personally with a revolver.

  • Did not see this one but Dogville was a masterpiece. It was the first Von Trier "complete" movie. And what's funny is that Dogville denounce America yet what makes Dogville works it's because Von Trier embraced the American Hollywood happy ending.

  • I loved Dogville. Well, maybe "loved" isn't quite the right word but it was a brilliant movie. Really want to see this, but I think I need a little break after Dogville; intense.

  • I don't like the camerawork in this it looks more frantic than Dogville...

  • I think the real reason he will never go to America is cuz he is scared of planes. He drives his trailor all way to Cannes...While his stars fly in on private jets. At Cannes Kidman said she would do the trilogy, anyone know why she backed out? Dogville was hard to make, LVT drove the cast crazy. Its worth seeing on the bonus material on t he Dogville dvd.

  • When LARS VON TRIER shot the third movie before DOGVILLE and MANDERLAY its right to make another movie

  • ¿Qué dicen? ¿habrá "Wasington"? SPOILER-Recuerden que Manderlay se quedó aún pendiente para una tercera parte... qué final!!-.

  • its the sequel to dogville,i'm doing a movie analysis about it.

  • yeah, it's actually a trilogy...

the last part is called ''Washington'', but Lars von Trier haven't started shootin it yet...

  • thats true.

  • sorry, the third is called ''Wasington'', with no ''h''

  • looks like dogville with a different name bt fuck i so badly wanna see it

  • I'm mexican and I think that this film can tell us something about our own towns and the kinds of slavery and colonizarion that happened here.

  • Um dinamarquês cutucando a onça com vara curta. O filme é muito chato!

    Boring

  • o.O

  • I loved Dancer in the Dark, but was sort of repulsed at Dogville, though I mildly enjoyed it. I found the style of the filmmaking too calculated and contrived. Plus, I have never liked Kidman. I don't know whether I wanna watch this, though the premise looks interesting.

  • I think Manderlay is better that Dogville, so you can just tell what I'm expecting from Wasington (the third yet-to-be-done installment, without and H )

  • Yeah thats if Lars finishes it, aparently he has been having some trouble with it. Tho i have to challenge ur view on Dogville, actors were way better and the movie was a shock cos of the way its done. Manderlay tho, it was expected to b set out the way it was and it was expected to hav a story line which challenges society laws through Grace trying to change the society and the society using her. However if u like the challenged idea in of Manderlay more than the Dogville one then fair enough.

  • The Von Trier charm is lost on me. And to say Americans won't like his films because he levels criticism at America...is silly. All my friends do nothing but criticize our government and American lifestyles. Many Americans feel very good about cricizing their country. They get very good grades on their art projects doing so.

  • Lars von Tirier ist absolutely grat!!!

  • Lars Von Trier is so fucking mad, I love his films :)

  • What do you expect, it's Lars Von Trier. This is all from Lars Von Trier's head, you can't expect a normal film from him.

  • Never...and I mean NEVER, have I been more insulted by a film, both as an aspiring filmmaker AND as a human being. I actually thought I would vomit during the end credit sequence. Liking this movie is the same as liking the Nazi party...They suck you in and make you believe the most ridiculous things imaginable. I have NO respect for the director whatsoever.

  • The very fact that you got sucked in proves he did his job as a director, don't you think? I think he is brilliant and avant guarde and making motion picture history. What have you done?

  • i am an aspiring filmaker too and i think the reason why you hate this movie, and the director, is because you are an american student. lars von trier movies are not for americans. lars von trier las movies are against american ideal of democracy and moral. its obvious that all americans will vomit during the film.

if you really want to make motion pictures, here is an advice: try a second look to the thinks that you do not understand our like. in them you will learn something.

  • i'm canadian...

    but nice try

  • "...not for americans" yeah right, LVT made a great movie with a US setting and respected US actors, but really it's for every /other/ nation's citizens to enjoy.

"...all americans will vomit..." no one who knew americans would make such a snobbish, bigoted remark. "it is obvious" you are a victim of mob-mentality.

try this: "look at things you do not understand or like. in them you will learn something."

americans are caring and intelligent. whether or not your movies tell you so.

  • Well, I would expect such reactions from the people I was so obviously insulting, although I've always though that both Dogville and Manderlay represent many countries of the West side of the world, and not just the US.

  • Yes and no. He is a Danish that will never be in America (continent), but still has some power and influence to work with well known actors.

    Mainstream Indie if you ask.

  • I have a great idea, you should shoot a movie or do something creative in order to actually have the credit to insult a director like this. He has worked real hard to make this movie, he has created a world when did this and if you want to question it you should inform yourself more about the director intentions, not all movies belong to the entertainment industry but some, like this one, belongs to the art universe so watch it with a more critic point o view.

  • *thumps up!* von Trier is a genius

  • This is one of the best Movies i have ever seen.

  • That's because you've never seen DOGVILLE!

It's much more powerfull than this one..

Actually, is a trilogy... Dogville came before this one.

    It's simply breathtaking! You'll love it ;) I did =D

(or maybe you did see Dogville and you like this one better for a reazon that I cant' actually understand! xD)

  • hehe... no, Lars von Trier is one of my favourite directors. ive seen most of his movies and I love Dogville AND Manderlay.

  • ok, then! :P My bad

But I don't see your comment on Dogville's trailer here in youtube saying how much you love it!!

    Humff!!

    =P
