I love how young players here comment on how easy this boss is... but back then, just being face to face with this boss was EPIC, your hands were shaking, you had no idea how to beat him, by instinct you tried to jump over him to kill it, but that wouldn't work and by the time you could think of an strategy you were dead... back then we had no internet, and no magazine would throw the trick out there as easily... still this game will never get old.

@pandaumk3 Well said! I only knew how to beat Bowser because my friends had told me. And it was only after many plays that I was able to make it to the last level as Fire Flower Mario and actually kill Bowser, but otherwise, there's no glowing axe at the end of the bridge or any other indication of how to beat him. You just have to wait it out and figure it out.

I was able to beat Bowser with Hammer Mario and Fire Mario.  Couple shots with Hammer Mario and beat him without using the bricks.

My big brother had pretty much given up on level 8 but I was hellbent on clearing it. I'd spend days, literally, trying to beat it. Facing bowser I had cold sweat and my heart was really pounding. Beat him first try though, by a hair. Oh my god it was intense

I agree that it is more fun. I really only try beating it using warp whistles when I'm showing-off or have only an hour to play. When I have time, I like to play through other worlds, especially 4. World 4 is so totally awesome, and it is very fun. I do wish that SMB3 would have been part of Famicom Mini or NES Classics, as SMA4 isn't the same as the Famicom.
