  • Hi Shawn, I would just like to complement you on you ability to relate you knowledge and your understanding of the fundamentals of the golf swing. I've seen quite a few of your videos and there is really no flash (use this drill to fix this fault) to them. The basics are the key to success! Thanks and keep up the good work.

    Craig

  • Shawn,

    An awesome oldie but goodie....this is a really good lesson here...

  • Hi Shawn, I can maintain my spine angle, but still get disconcerted when I spy the club head come over my leading shoulder (right shoulder, I'm left-handed). Sometimes even with irons!! I'm swinging past parallel & left of the target line (right of the target line for right-hander). Watched a slow motion video of myself, & although a lot of eminent golf techers say some elbow bend is ok, my leading elbow (right) appears to be bending too much. Also contributing to "chicken-wing" on the way down.

  • @mollydooka17 I have a couple more videos to help in this department; "Get Bubba wide; shawn clement" and "overswing and fast backswing; shawn clement"; You can also see my "Left arm straight; shawn clement" for a very solid way to feel the extension of your lead arm; Shawn

  • This video turned on the light bulb for me. I have always struggled with spine tilt especially with the driver. I never felt comfortable until I tried the position you suggested (hammering a nail).

  • There are many reason causing overswing, is not just spine angel. I can set my spine angel like what you mentioned in your video, but still make an overswing pattern.. The secret is not there....

  • Spine angle and rotation around the left hip socket you gotta feel it to believe it. Abosolutly incredible, repeatable contact. This is a very important lesson.

  • Shawn- if you have a spine tilt and you want to keep the club rotating around the spine, wouldn't there have to be some manipulation to make it look like it is on plane from a rear view camera...otherwise, I would think that crossing the line would be the natural top angle of the shaft?

  • @paularagon11 Great question and observation; the thing is that the relationship of the arm-club unit is one that gets placed by gravity and centrifugal force and the purpose of the body is to allow it to track by getting out of the way; which means that the body DOES NOT PLACE THE ARMS AND THE ARMS DON'T PLACE THE ARMS; they get placed. See "arms and body timing;shawn clement". "stop crashing; shawn clement" and "top view of swing; shawn clement" and you will understand; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

    Great vids/lessons. I've suffered from a bad lower back for some time, made much worse by an inadvertent taking of the club too far behind, a reverse pivot and a massive heave OTT. At it's worst I drove a ball with a 3 wood, 3 inches actually into the ground, and it was only just visible.

    Discovered your lesson and wow what a difference. Still feels a little strange, but the results are there when I maintain spine angle, the freedom and power is quite something, thanks!

    James

  • Oops I wasn't finished. Does this go for all clubs and shots like chipping and pitching? Thanks. You are tremendous help.

  • @DonDotta86

    I have the perfect video for you on this; "Short Game Chipping; #1 Most Popular Golf Teacher on You Tube Shawn Clement" video; and the quick answer is no, there is no pre-turn on chips, pitches and fade shots; Shawn

  • Wow Shawn, you already know this but I can't tell you how much since this makes. I've been struggling with a reverse pivot that I couldn't seem to get rid of. All so

  • This lesson on spine tilt has done wonders! Even just from a concept point. With the spine tilt and keeping the width in my arms it keeps me from overswinging as well.

  • For right handers keeping the left shoulder lower than the right shoulder in the back swing and vice versa in the downswing has really helped as long as you transfer your weight properly back to your right side then to your left side

  • Great as usual.Found out I was doing something wrong. When I was setting up and creating a spine tilt to the right ( I am right handed) I wasn't allowing my tail bone to go to the left. I was bending instead of shifting that angle, if that makes any sense. It wasn't until I watched another of your videos where you talk about having your head behind the ball and your tail bone in front of the ball that I realized I was failing to do this. Has made a big difference. Thanks again for the help.

  • Thanks Shawn, hey everyone how about a litte chip shot over to The Golf Channel and check out Shawns Golf Video for the next instructor on the Golf Channel. Give it a thumbs up and support Shawn on this one. Lord knows he helps all our golf swings. Thanks Shawn for all your instruction and the very best technical info on the internet. Good luck with the Golf Channel instructor. You deserve it. Take care. Jeffs45

  • @Jeffs45rpm Thank you for the support Jeff! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

    i write you from germany.

    My question is: What can i cure the hook or pull-hook.

    On a video in slowmotion i can see that i`m coming from the outside with a closed clubface.

    I never had a slice and although i try to hit a slice or fade with a open clubface and a wide open stance i always hook the ball.

    I would like to have a slice, because of the reason that most of my hooks are long but out of bounds and i think a slice will be shorterand not so dangerous.

    Thanks for your tip.

  • @callaghan153 I have a couple of videos for you: Please see "golf pro lesson working the ball" part 1 and 2 so you have a complete understanding of how to start the ball in the direction you want and end the ball on target; then make sure you are sending the action with rhythm and power with "golf pro lesson ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2! Shawn

  • Shawn, at set-up I am fine. I know my spine angle is changing during the swing as I can feel myself straighting up somewhat. I am hitting the dreaded hozzle rocket a lot. I know my shoulders must not be level but what is the correct shoulder relationship to the spine angle? Thanks for posting a great teaching video. I really think most poor shots or at least many are a direct result of poor spine angle. Jeff

  • @Jeffs45rpm Both Jeff and jtill75; you can see my new video from the top view which will help a lot; "golf pro lesson top view of swing" and "golf pro lesson working the ball" part 1 and 2 and make sure you maintain the feel of starting the shot to the right of the target through out the whole swing! "golf pro lesson head steady" part 2 will help too; Shawn

  • Just played today with all the new info and my commitment to the tilted spiral and shot about 10 strokes lower then usual. For the most part I hit he most beautiful and solid right to left shots. I did notice though that every once in a while I would have a real bad pull or hook to the left. Do you know what might be the likely cause of this or How I can fix this? Are there any drills at the range that can help eliminate this? Tilted spiral has really worked wonders for me though. Thanks!

  • @jtill75 Just make sure that you are focused on the area where you want to start the ball and that you are sending a nice powerful, effortless, rhythmic action in that direction. See "golf pro lesson stop crashing" as a reminder. Shawn

  • When I set up it feels like I am going to hit it right, but when I hit it starts right but comes back to the left and down the middle. I just thought I'd let others know its going to feel that way because this right feeling was holding me back from keeping my spine angle. Love the lessons keep up the good work. If I had the money I would definately fly to Canada in a for personal instuction.

  • @jtill75 Yes; nice deduction! See "golf pro lesson tilted spiral part 3" as well as "golf pro lesson working the ball" part 1 and 2 for the full reveal on what you just discovered!

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

    Love your instructional DVD I bought about 12 months ago, its taken away a lot of mystery and guess work in why I was hitting the ball so badly.

    Been meaning to ask about the spine tilt at address. As this was key for me to hitting my long irons and rescue club better! Before I was prob too much over the ball.

    Was wondering tho I suppose you can over exaggerate this tilt and this would lead to other problems, but does the spine tilt vary much between the short and long irons?

  • @parttroll1 Yes, if you overdo it, you will have too much weight on the right; also, remember that the arm club unit uses gravity and centrifugal force to track the arc and does not follow the feel of the static position at address; see "golf pro lesson work the ball" part 1 and 2 and the tilt does change with the width of the stance and the look of the shot; Shawn

  • @clemshaw

    Ah cheers Shawn that cleared things up. It was one of my many faults having lessons with my pro that I did tend to leave weight on my back foot, usually by over swinging leading to hooks etc, but managed to get out of this habit now

    Like most things in golf the spine tilt is a subtle feeling. I'll keep working on it as my golf is slowly improving!

  • I tried folllowing the natural arc and found that with the tilt I was pushing everthing right. I closed the clubface and get a draw but its hard to control. I used less tilt and then the ball flight was straighter. I think keeping the arms wide lets the club pass on a shallower path so it stays longer down the target line but if I 'give the club to gravity ' it tends to come inside. My point is that I am having to consciously keep the arms wide or I end up with a push or push slice.

  • @par1x Yes; this happens when you overdo the tilt; have a look at my others to tame it a bit more; see "golf pro lesson work the ball" part 1 and 2; and "golf pro lesson tilted twirl"; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn

    Any thumb rule for the degree of tilt or way to make sure that it is not excessive or it is not just the neck and head.

  • @mjs0039,

    The correct amount of tilt allows you to feel that you can swing to your target effortlessly without making any compensations/manipulations. Just feel that you are braced against your forward side and can swing in balance. Have a look at "Golf pro lesson Tilted Twirl" for an update/further explanation on this topic.

  • Shawn,

    This is a very good video. In my opinion, one of your best and most important. It's KEY to my current swing problem. Im gonna work at this.

    Shawn, its beginning to worry me how much time I spend watching your clips-I blame the snow outside. But I watch them in summer too! Guess I addicted, but they are improving my game-slowly, but surely. Golf is a lot tougher game than you make it look (u make it look easy). Time and practice are the key.

    Matt

  • Hey Matt;

    Stay tuned for more videos in the next couple of weeks to perfect on this issue with rhythm and brace;

    Shawn

  • Ok gonna make this real easy on people. I live in Orlando and work at the Mike Bender Academy. Home of Masters champ Zach Johnson. I wish I lived near Shawn because he is the best teacher I have ever seen. Shawn has helped me more than the no. 9th rated coach in the US. I play with touring pros each week and they comment on my ball striking. Get the DVD and watch it over and over best 50 bucks your ever going to spend period.

  • Hey Scott; I wanted to thank you for such a great comment; I am truly humbled.

    You can count on me to continue coming out with more solid videos and DVDs; maybe one day you will come up to Toronto for a visit! :) Shawn

  • Shawn, I am sure you mentioned that there is a reason why the pros don't do the spiral tilt at set up but do it at impact, but I can't find the reason on the videos or the DVD(which is great by the way). Can you explain?

    Jim

  • Hey Jim;

    SOME, you will actually see many pros getting tilted at address especially when playing a draw; the ones who don't are simply able to shift back against the left side before the strike of the ball and when the lower spine shifts closer to the forward hip, the upper spine swings back and voila, tilt that allows for a release THROUGH the ball; check out my "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 for more on this; Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • Yes Shawn, you have got to be the very best golf instructor I've ever seen. I bought your DVDs yesterday and I am looking forward to viewing them, I know I will learn so much. BUT, where do I go to get one of those magic clubs that you have. No human can hit a golf ball as smoothly as you do without one. Take care and I look forward to a lot of golf instruction from you. As we say in the South...you be de best!

  • Thanks very much Bob! You will enjoy the dvds; I put a lot of work into them and am very proud; and thank you for the kind words too;

    All the best to you! Shawn

  • is this the same theory with with the DRIVER.

    I PRETTY GOOD WITH MY IRONS BUT WITH MY DRIVER ITS SOOOO RANDOM

  • First start with the correct set up with the driver; the "golf pro lesson great driver tip" is the most ground braking; then go to the "golf pro lesson modern driver part 1 and 2" for more options! Shawn

  • best one yet i have learnt the most from this one

  • Hi Shawn, I like your videos and I have purchased your DVD set. A question, I throw a ball left ,write left b but I swing a bat and golf right handed. Most of my problem comes from not being able to release the club at the bottom after impact. I seem to hit pushes or snap hooks. I can't seem to relate to the skipping stones analogy. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Yes! The best analogy is the Frisbee Throw; you also want to make sure your backswing is not to shallow which would cause your snappers and pushes; see "golf pro lesson arms falling down plane", "golf pro lesson arms in front of body" and "golf pro lesson elbow close?" videos; then put it all together with the "Golf Pro lesson perpetual motion drill"

    Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • Watched the 3 videos, thanks for the advice I will pass on the PVC stuff & Explanar. Your videos really help!!! I continue to make great contact but hit the ball 30+ yards left. This ball goes straight but hard left. Is this lack of tilt? I do focus on one dimple on the ball through impact. Help??

  • Have a look at the "Golf Pro lesson tilted Spiral" part 3; it will open your eyes as to the different options with ball position; see also "golf pro lesson head steady part 2" Shawn

  • molson,get a buddy to tape your swing, great way to actually 'see' what you need to work on.

  • I'm a real fan of your videos especially as a beginner. I'd like to practise your drills but noticed that it's difficult/disruptive to do at a range. Any tips or feedback?

  • Hi Shawn, I've been suffering with the shanks recently. I noticed on a video of my swing that my body tilts forward towards the ball very slightly at the top of the swing. I presume this is what is causing the shank. Any tips on how I could stop this involuntary movement? I would be eternally grateful!

    Thanks, Luke, England

  • Hey Shawn thanks for all your help, one question I have is how do I know if I am tilting to much? I can't figure out how much to tilt

  • Balance is the key! You must feel balanced and in a position to effortlessly swing; see "golf Pro Lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 as well as the "golf Pro Lesson don't keep your head down" part 1 and 2. Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • Hey shawn, I love your videos. Anytime I'm struggling on the course I come back to your videos and they have been helping out alot. Not only am I hitting the ball more solid, I am starting to understand the swing more. Thanks for the help :)

  • i love your videos, but your audio needs help. lol

  • I know...you will see my new videos have blue tooth and sound great! Shawn

  • i videotaped myself. and my god i didn't realize that i lift up about 3 inches on my backswing. it doesn't feel that way, but it is pretty bad. any suggestions or other videos to watch?

    thanks! carmen

  • Hey Carmen;

    See my "golf pro lesson Head Bobble"; it will clear this up for you; Shawn

  • nice video,use gravity as your tempo.

  • You always see the Pros with a straight left arm on the take away. How straight and how long do you keep this going back. Grant B.C. Canada

  • See "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill", "Golf Pro Lesson Takeaway and starting the swing", "Golf Pro Lesson momentum toss" part 1 and 2 for a start...:)

    Thanks for your question! Shawn

  • Great work...

  • Shawn you are a genius. I received your DVDs I ordered last week and it really puts everything together. I had been using your utube vids and improved but with the DVD's, I really improved. I can now hit my 9i 150 yards( before it was about 130 yards). The sense of balance I feel now with this new swing is awesome! I don't even think about hitting the golf ball like before. I really love the one leg and feet together drill. Need practice on the blindfold drill.

  • Thanks very much for writing in Monty! Very much appreciated! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, great vid, I seem to loose my spine angle on the backswing I have a feeling it's because of my arms are coming back too much on the inside, should the arms be straight up and down in the backswing when I try this I feel I'm coming into the ball too steep, also is your own swing stack and tilt? I see your left leg is at an angle on your backswing

  • Hey Eddie!

    Not Stack and tilt...at all! :)

    What you want to feel is how the arms are tracking gravity and the body is turning out of the way; you will feel this in the "perpetual motion drill video" and then take it to the ball using the "Timing and Tempo Update" and the "Bilateral Golf Swing" videos...All the best! Shawn

  • thats what i do in my wing, have you got a drill, how to help me?

    luke 15 handicap

  • Hey Like!

    Check out the answer I have under Donnie...Shawn

  • Shawn, I maintain my spine angle well in the back swing but on the downswing I trust forward with my hips, get more erect and lose my spine angle. Can you help?

  • Check out the answer under Donnie!

    Shawn

  • Shawn, can you recommend a good drill to ensure that I maintain the proper spine angle, one of my worst tendencies has been a reverse weight shift which has affected my swing path into the ball on the downswing.

  • Hey Donnie; Thanks for the comment;

    The building blocks for this are very important so I would recommend my DVD to start; the videos you want to watch are "Feet together drill" (super for spine angle issues) "One Leg Drill" ,"Sequence power drills", "2008 Golf swing Review" part 1 and 2, "Downswing Weightshift"; the key here is to have enough backswing so there is no need to thrust; which means getting the left knee to rotate in behind the ball in the backswing to allow the full turn...Shawn

  • Comment removed

  • i noticed in front of my mirror that when i set up with just the left hand on the club, when i put my right hand on, my spine tilted automatically. i notice you do it deliberately. maybe my sppine tilt isn't enough? it actually feels wierd tilting to one side. i was taught to stay stacked with a straight spine. so much for

    that teacher!!

  • You actually have 2 choices at address: You can pre-turn and tilt; but see the "Golf Pro Lesson Be a solid Ball striker" to make sure you don't over do this; many of my students have a tendency to over do that tilted position when they are not using their instincts; the other video I want you to see is the "Golf Pro Lesson 2008 golf swing review" part 1 and 2; All the best! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

    I am a beginner and I love your videos. They have given me a good start. But I am having problems with consistency. I know part of my problem is evedent in my divit. The divit is not on line with the target, it is deep and looks like I am cutting accross the ball. However the ball flight, when I do strike the ball well, is straight. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?

  • Hi Cheryl;

    This video here is a great start; combine this with a solid brace into the left side; have a look at "Golf Pro Lesson Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3; all 3 are important; also the "Braced Tilt part 1 and 2" videos...Then add the "Perpetual motion drill" video to the mix on all 3 as you are keeping your eyes on a spot in front of you; see the blur of the club pass back and through in front of your eyes and see a nice oval arc; then let gravity do the work around a steady head!

  • Hi Shawn,

    Thanks for the great videos. Using your lesson I get a 85 today, after fighting with 90 - 95 during several months.

  • many thanks for the time to reccommend a group of videos for me to watch. The videos on the tilted spiral (1,2,3) have provided a very informative insight into a secret of golf- for me anyway.After one session on the range i conclude it must be what the good players must be doing (for starters anyway)but youre the first to demonstrate it. considering i've been going to a golf clinic why hasn't this been in my set-up routine? many many thanks for all your helpful videos, alan

  • Hey Great point! The golf teaching industry still has a long way to go and my purpose is to get the information out there for all to enjoy and digest and it is through all our interactions that we will get somewhere; through all your feedback, I have become a better teacher and communicator and it is well worth the effort for me to do this; keep learning, stay open minded, ask questions challenge your local pro to get better! Thanks for your comment! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

    Thanks for the great videos. I have a question re: braced tilt. Do you have more weight on the right leg or the left leg.

    Thanks

  • It would be more against the left leg (60% left and 40% right)

    Just like I wrote in the comment below,

    the answers are best explained in the "No Bones About it", "be a solid ball Striker", "braced Tilt part 2" and the "Tilted Spiral" part 1,2 and 3 videos.

  • at address with the proper spine tilt what would you say is the weight distribution between the feet? i think i'm either tilting too much at address or loading too much weight on my right foot at address which obviously increases during the backswing making it difficult to get it back on the downswing.despite this with your video help things are improving for the better, alan

  • Thanks for the question!

    The answers are best explained in the "No Bones About it", "be a solid ball Striker", "braced Tilt part 2" and the "Tilted Spiral" part 1,2 and 3 videos.

  • I hear alot of talk about bringing the right hand over when following through on the swing, is this right? Again like alot of people out there your teaching is putting many on the right path. We now have a saying after a good shot, I just had a Shawn Clement Moment. Thx Paul

  • Hey Paul;

    Good question! Although the body does most of the squaring up when it returns out of the way of momentum in the backswing, there is a point when the club head catches up with the hands just past the ball but the release of the right hand over the left is more upward than around like in baseball...it feels exactly like the pop of the right hand over the left hand like the baseball swing but the plane is more up and down...you will see this in the "Taut swing Philosophy" video...

  • I reviewed this video and it's been invaluable threefold. It's not only allowed me to prevent overswinging, but also to eliminate my swaying and to get me to a complete finish onto my left side.

    I think the biggest hurdle for me was visualizing (and feeling!) how to maintain the spine angle while incorporating the tilt. I really do feel you've given me the key to having an efficient swing.

    Thanks again Shawn!

  • I have been slicing for the last week (BAD)lol, come to find out, I have been over tilting? Is that possible to over tilt?

  • My bad... it was my grip making me slice. It's amazing how important the grip is.

  • Shawn, good lesson. I'm on the pga tour and have been working on maintaining my spine angle. You gave some good insight, thanks.

  • Thanks Kyle! Appreciate the comment;

    Let me know what I can do to help; I have been coaching some top college players for the last 6 months and they are coming up the amateur ranks fast; one just made the top 32 at the US women's amateur...Shawn

  • Shawn - During the backswing ....."maintaining spine angle" = "maintaining tilt". Correct? I've always thought the right shoulder rises above the left at the top of the backswing - but if I maintain my tilt, it feels like it remains lower (like at address) at the top of the backswing. I assume this is just a feeling. If I understand that correctly, this may be an "a-ha" moment for my swing.

  • You are on the right track here;and the term feel is to be kept in mind...the key here is to feel like you are staying forward over the ball with the chest like in the "Brick Break"video from the "You Tube Analogies" page of my website and the "don't keep your head down" part 1 and 2 videos on the "you tube Shawn" page

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • Shawn - Thanks for the response. Your YouTube videos are a great compliment to your DVD - which I highly recommend. Between the two, I've made great improvements in my game this season. Chris.

  • i get the width of my glove hand (leftie) but i have a problem with spading my left arm out and messing up the rest of the swing. thnx for great videos

  • Holy crap, that is a good lesson.

    My instructor has been telling me to "watch out for the lateral shift." I've noticed that my downswing has started to come closer to to the shoulder plane (rather than the original shaft plane - video analysis is addictive). Now I can see they are related. Can't wait to try this with the momentum toss. One question: when you show the proper address, are your hips a little closed to the target (1:53)?

  • Yes; you will get a more complete story on this in the Braced Tilt and Braced Tilt part 2 videos;

    Thanks for the comment and keep at it!

    Shawn

  • That's exactly what I did. (You must get tired of telling people to just look at your other videos - which is really a testament to just how many videos you've uploaded).

    The results were ASTOUNDING. In one swing I went from a weak slice to a crazy hook. Before long I figured out where the plane was and was launching it, straight. Its going to take some getting used to (odd pushes and pulls for no apparent reason), but it definitely took me out of a rut.

  • That is great feedback; thanks for writing back! It is much better to have someone go to another video than have to answer half cocked in 500 charaters or less! You guys deserve it!:) Shawn

    Shawn

  • Shawn,

    I had a real "Ta-Da!" moment after watching this. That's exactly what I've been doing with my swing. Thank you! You're awesome. BTW- do you have any comments on a woman's vs. a man's swing? Anything specific we should know?

  • Hi and thanks for your comment and question;

    Hard to answer in less than 500 characters here; wow is there a lot! What I can say is that to hit well you need qualities from both sides! :)

    Maybe a nice topic for a video...hmm

    Shawn

  • Hi, Shawn! Every vid you posted here is great, just can't stop but watched them again and again. Over swing is a killer that bother me for long time, now I know how to get rid of it. Thank for you great vids, and look forware for more your new vids!!!

  • good vid shawn but im still dont know how much i should tilt my spine for my setup i keep having trouble getting the ball up in the air higher where it should be please help thanx

    Kenndon

  • I don't know why the comment did not post; sorry about that! I did a video talking about the way Leadbetter teaches how to hit crisp irons in my watchdog blog...look for it in the watchdog blog section of my "you tube shawn" page on my website;

  • I think I'm keeping my spine angle but my back always get into an arch shape..is that because i'm not extending my arm through the follow through?

  • You are either not letting the head come up enough to allow for your stacked finish or you are thrusting too much with the legs or hips-pelvis;

    Go to my website at shawnclementgolf dot com to my "You Tube Shawn" page and watch the following vids: "Feet together Drill" and "Stacked and Complete" and let me know what you think;

    Shawn

  • I think my hips going forward too much... I NEED TO GET YOUR DVD!!!!! I'll have to persuade my parents to get me your DVD.. um one question, in some of your videos, when you are down swinging, your hip looks like it's moving forward, but in other videos, it doesnt look like it. Like I said, I'm kinda pushing my hip first instead of turning.. I think that's the problem. Do I have to turn my hip instead of kinda pushing it forward? THANKS!!!

  • How long does it usually take for the DVD to come? I currently live in Bloomfield Hills, MI

  • The DVD takes on average a couple of weeks to get to destination...In the meantime for your hip question, watch "Hogan Power Drill" and Hogan Power Move", "Transition", "Leverage Power", "Catapult Power", "One Leg drill", "Swing Sequence" and "Sequence Power Drills";

    Shawn

  • Thanks! You're the best!

  • good vid shawn but i still dont know how much i should tilt my spine for my setup and through my swing i keep having trouble getting the ball up in the air higher where it should be please help thanks

    Kenndon srry i had to repeat myself i forgot to hit reply

  • Go to my website at shawnclementgolf dot com to the "You Tube Shawn" page and check out the watch dog blog april 2008 with David Leadbetter's crisp irons article; I show you how to use the width of stance to gauge the level of tilt; Also look at "Braced Tilt Part 1 and Part 2"; Shawn

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

    You are the bloody ... MAN ! THANK YOU !

    I cannot believe how much my ball striking and overall swing has improved in just a matter of weeks ... Hey.. my misses tend to be pull draws (not really bad hooks) is there one thing that causes this ? or a place I shoud look to figure it out?

    Once again.. thanks ! the DVD hasnt arrived yet.. but I can hardly wait !

    Thanks again from Las Cruces, NM !

  • You are welcome!

    Have a look at my new vid called "Golf Pro Lesson Braced Tilt Part 2" to make sure you are braced into the left side through impact;

    Also look at the "Swing Sequence" and the "Sequence Power Drills"

    All my vids are on the "You Tube Shawn" page of my website;

    The DVD has been averaging 2 weeks for delivery; please send me an email to give me the date of purchase and I will check in on it;

    Shawn

  • Hello Shawn! One thing I still don't get is how do I figure out the accurate spine tilt position? Secondly, it seems to me that you achieve that position by kind of pre-turning your hips - is that right? And if so, why does that move not affect your swing direction because obviously your shoulders can't be parallel to the target line anymore? Thanks for any response - keep on teaching that great way! • Great questions...ive been wondering the same thing...????

  • Have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson Braced Tilt" video which will explain how this works...and yes, the hips and shoulders are slightly pre turned since I am behind the ball at address...which will be different when I get to impact with the head being the only component behind the ball with the shoulders square to slightly open and the hips at least 30 degrees open;

    Shawn

  • Thank you Shawn for this wonderful video correction which help me understand that I should retain my spine angle on the backswing. I always changed spine angle as I swing but now I will not & hope to be more consistent in accuracy!

  • great video

  • Hi Shawn,

    Thanks for the great Golf Tips.

    I would like to know if the "Pre-Turn" at setup is different from the Spine Tilt at address?

    All the best.

  • Hi and thanks for the question; it is a pre-turn and pre-tilt all together..."Golf Pro Lesson Braced Tilt" has the elaborated version for you; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn. Great teaching. I have been tinkering with the "stack and tilt" method, and I noticed that I am getting more power and distance....but I dont feel like I have much control. Any thoughts?

  • Yes, Your arms, shoulders and hips should swing around a very steady axis; the head is the top and the tail bone is the bottom; this video here is a great example of steady tilt and the "Golf Pro Lesson Head steady" should help do the rest,

    Shawn

  • I have watched this video several times and have tried to put into practice what you talk about. However I find that my overswing isn't a result of not maintaining my spine angle but I often inadvertently let my arms and wrist collapse at the top of the swing.

    A bad habit I am trying to correct.

    Any drills you could suggest to keep that arm and wrist from collapsing?

    Great series of videos the best on YouTube and the internet I have found.

  • Hi and thanks for the kind words;

    Have a look at "Golf Pro Lesson Taut Arms" and "Golf Pro Lesson set Up for taut arms" as well as "Golf Pro Lesson Arm Motion" to help you with this;

    Let me know how you do, Shawn

  • Wait a minute! I have never tilted my self behind the ball, mostly just putting the ball in front of my head but I have not tiltet the upper spine away from the body like you do here.

    Can that be the reason for my pushing it the right?

    Very educational this video

  • shawn i have watched some of your outdoor lessons in the past, which are great. thanks. but i just had to point out that i could'nt give these indoor ones my full concentration because of the terrible echo on the audio. if others are having a similar problem then it could be having an adverse effect on your efforts

  • Some are and I understand...I will be getting a bluetooth mic for this upcoming winter...I am just amazed I was able to put that many out! It has been so busy here...Thanks for the kind words and comment! Shawn

  • Love your vids. Shawn they are very helpful.

  • Another excellent video, Shawn!

    I have a tendancy to push the ball right of the target, and I'm wondering if it's caused by a change in my spine angle. Around 4:27 you mention a change towards a straighter angle and and over-the-top strike that seems like it would pull or hook the ball left. Can a change in spine angle cause me to regularly push the ball right as well, or is it indicative of something else?

    Keep up the great work! We all appreciate it!

    Erik

  • Yes; especially if you thrust with your right side in the downswing or if you let the arms fall towards the body instead of falling in front of the body and down the plane...have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson Arms Falling" Video as well as the "Golf Pro Lesson Stacked and Complete" Video and let me know.

    Shawn

  • an overswing isnt necesarily the club goin past parallel. so if i swing past parallel because of a large shoulder turn, is this a problem, if i can control it on the downswing? im not tilting and losing my spine angle at the top, so is this a problem

  • If you observe these 4 things, you are not overswinging: Letting go of the club at the top, loosing width with arms, changing spine angle, or loosing your centre (sway)...if all this stays in place, and you go past parallel your fine! I have the tendency in my left handed swing too!

    Great comment! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, I have been setting my head behind the ball using the technique from this video and my iron shots are amazing, but my longer clubs like the hybrid, fairway wood and driver all seem to want to go to the right. Tim

  • Just watch out that you are not tilting away from the target rather than tilting into the left side...must be a balanced tilt;

    Shawn

  • Confusion. Don't we want to tilt away from the target?

  • Yes of course! See "golf pro lesson Braced Tilt" part 2 for the best analogy! Shawn

  • Hi Sir, one question please, you emphasize on spine tilt but when i do that at address,the club head opens but when i have zero spine angle i can place the club square but i dont feel comfortable .

    with no tilt still my right shoulder is lower than my left so has it got anything to do with my posture? i'm quite an athletic person i'm 17 years of age and play 8 handicap

    Thank you,

    Ernest

  • i understand the constant spine angle, but what about tilting slightly away from the ball at impact. isnt that the correct postion to be in, epscially with a driver when you want a ascending blow?

  • Yes I agree; that is the point; when the head is behind and stays behind the ball, it will give you the desired result you are talking about;

  • Great stuff!

    Thxs Shawn

    John

  • Awesome video Shawn, is there a drill to help maintain the correct spine angle?

  • great vid..loved it! keep it up Shawn!

  • Great lesson Shawn !! My backswing is very flat and I think this will help!

  • Nice lesson, tells you alot indeed!

  • Hi Shawn, shold i be concerned about the position of clubhead on the backswing halfway back ? You hear so much about the toe of the club having to be pointing to sky.

  • thanks for doing this shawn.

  • More Lessons! Your principles make so much since!

  • Hi, thanks a lot for those videos! Great and pretty easy to understand and a good help for, maybe students like me, who can't afford to take lessons! Keep them going!
