This was, still is, and always will be, my favourite of the Mario Kart series. Nice variety, excellent music, brilliant courses, fantastic characters, and no Nintendo racing victory screen rubs it in with the "Congratulations!" (and you maybe uncork a few bottles of sparkling cider while you're at it) like Super Mario Kart.

Guys, you obviously don't know how the coins work unless you played Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart Super Circuit. The coins increase your top speed, and it's brought back in Mario Kart 7 to again increase Top Speed and unlock Kart parts. Kids these days.

Dug this out last weekend to re-live the fun of 20 years ago.

You can try hopping a second time while sliding at Ghost valley, but the second time, release the steering. It feels alien, but will straighten the kart up, and you won't hit the wall. This tactic is essential for trax like Vanilla lake, Koopa beach, Choco island and Donut plains.

The original SuperMarioKart is the best iteration, and always will be.

20 Years later it is still holding it's own.

honestly this games controls sucks wrinkly balls thiz is the worst mario kart ever just because the steering is atrocous,jerky,and horrible can be very frustrating all the time but musics great i couldnt manage to beat star cup and special cup on 150cc due to the suck ass steering controls but for new comers i do not recommend you play this because i literally wanted to throw my wii classic controller and console across the room because the controls are clunky

You have to unlock 150cc just like on MK64 where you have to unlock 200cc. The goal is to get gold in all race cups in 100cc and you unlock. This game has a back up battery so it saves 150cc and lap times. You can reset by pressing L,R,A and B on the title screen, make sure to reset if you pick up the game. Thats part of the challenge other the 1st place :) Old skool gamer that floged this game

I don't care about the nostalgia of this game, it was fun for a while until I got into the special cup and it is BRUTAL! its like every driver is out to get you. not to mention they are able to jump over items that you or any of them drop. plus they can even jump your red shells! I was only able to get 2nd place after many many tries. I remember playing this as a kid and I wasn't very skilled with games back then and never knew it was this difficult after getting to the special cup.

Legendary! The original and best in the series. This game takes some SKILL to master, the newer mariokart games are to easy and even a bad driver can win if hes lucky and get good items. Like in mariokart 64 you always get good items if u are last, but no handicap in this game, its all about driving skills.

Actually in this game al the characters were identical. The speed and weight changes didn't come until mario 64. People swear up and down that x character is better and faster and handles better, but fact is they all handle the same in the SNES. I read that in one of the Nintendo interviews or heard on of the original programmers saying that. Still, people always swear they feel a difference, which is a testament to how much people get into the game.

@RazorBladeLight There were definite differences in Super Mario Kart's drivers, and pairs of drivers were the same. Mario and Luigi were good all-rounders, Bowser and Donkey Kong had the best top speed. Yoshi and Princess had the best acceleration. Toad and Koopa had the best handling.

How on earth did u sleep on this game in 1992? Easily was the best SNES had to offer. Seriously none of your friends had it? I was only 8 at the time and played this game non stop with my brother (9 at the time). Anyways Toad is the best to play with in the original. Although I loved this game, Double Dash trumps this game. The Wii versus is just disappointing due to the battle mode change some other things lack in that version IMO. 64 version is just okay nothing spectacular.

i never liked this version because the computer players cheated with items and coins, they never slowed down without coins, they jump over shells that are shot at them, and they all have stars and poison mushrooms that they abuse multipul times durring a lap, and if you had noticed each lap is that the course only has one space to get items. But its really fun to play with multiplayer

I am really lucky, because even though I'm twelve years old, my older siblings were raised in the 90's and introduced me to the classics. My friends have no appreciation for the classics, and would rather spend their time playing halo or call of duty 0_o. I played all the MK games in order and I say that MK64 was my personal favorite but I did have tons of great memories on this on too. I still play this from time to time. The newer MK games are just not as good as the SNES and N64 classics. The newer fans are missing out if they never played these ones.
