Fabulous! Didn't know this existed. A blow back to my Fri. and Sat.nights at the Central Plaza and Stuyvesant Casino here in NYC in the early 50's when we used to see Wild Bill along with Bechet, BabyDodds, Pops Foster, Teagarden, Willie the Lion, James P., Pee Wee, Edmund, Jimmy Archey, Hot Lips, Red Allen,etc.- everybody would drop by for jam sessions ($1.25 entrance fee! )
Those were the days. I'm a bit young to do that (53), but my father lived in NY about the same time, and he had a ball listening to all the boys you mentioned. I was lucky enough over a period of three years to record some of the finest traditional jazz from a public radio station in Syracuse NY, program run by Leo Rayhill. Daily, from 630 to 730 each weeknight. You should have heard Edmund Wild Bill Matty Miff even, in the 30's
Totally agree. In my humble opinion Gene Schroeder was an amazing player. A fantastic band pianist, Im thinking also of the commodore stuff from the 40's where there might be a wonderful 4 bar intro by Gene into something like Im Confessin or Peg o my heart.. setting the whole thing up brilliantly. I recently got a CD of the Condon mob live in 1955 and Gene's solo on If I Had You puts him right up at the top of the list of jazz pianists, a wonderful free flowing style, always interesting.
Underated does'nt even begin to cover it.Gene had a sound all of his own.A wonderful player.I very nearly fell off my chair laughing at Cliff Leemans brilliantly musical and at the same time humerous drum breaks at the end of these clips.Pure magic from a master.See the way he recoils from the final bass drum bomb.Great joyfull music. What is it with the people who refuse to make these clips available on DVD while at the same time stopping others making them available.Shooting would be too good!!
This is GREAT!!!! I think of Eddie Condon and Wild Bill as lead when I think of high energy HOT JAZZ. What i have learned over 40 years of playing jazz is that the reed player can be as powerful as any instrument to drive a band! Edmond is the perfect example but is buried somewhat by the salvaged recording; still this is a Beaut!!!!!!!Thanks. WONDERFUL STUFF!
Is there any film footage of the Eddie Condon Floor Show TV shows? I know there were a few lp's of the show with the audio portion. Those lp's are on some small label and very hard to find but they do have the audio from those TV shows. Are any of those Eddie Condon Floor Show TV shows on cd?
Very good question, I really don't know, but check ILBOFILMS here on youtube, he's great for surprises and has the most amazing collection of Jazz clips on youtube.
I checked my old buddy ILBOFILMS and to my surprise they have suspended his account - a real blow to the Jazz community here on youtube!!! He had the greatest and largest selection of all Jazz videos.
I also searched the web for Eddie Condon on Video there is only one that I found and that's of 1962, with a different band. I don't know why the old footage is not being released on DVD obviously there are plenty of people who'd be interested in them, just Like The Film SATCHMO THE GREAT!
I hate being at the mercy of these people who can suspend someone's account without notice. By removing old recordings and film clips they are putting the history of America's music in a closet where no one can hear it or see it. But hopefully the whole lousy American system is going to self destruct from the current economic crisis and the big companies owning the copyrights will go out of business and can no longer harass or prevent individuals with great recordings to share from sharing them.
totally agree but sadly, don't look for them to go bust. What a great point you make and so well said re. music kept in the closet. Pity the pin-head bean counters can't see that.
@jazzgirl1920s Your ignorance is pitiful. What good is all the music in the world going to do if the world collapses into a communist regime where music is outlawed anyway. Study your history before your ignorance dooms us all to repeat it.
These guys could swing. Just imagine if we could hear them with Bix. Wild Bill just drives them. It must have been difficult for those on the stage with him, that is, hard on their ears because of the decibals.
Yeah, they are one of the very very best in that formation - The Decibels were not a problem :)
Armstrong for example played much louder, but Wild Bill considered Edmond Hall the best clarinetist ever and he also introduced him to the Condon band, Jazz at it's best no doubt!
When Louis Armstrong band was touring South America (late 50.s) Ed Hall recorded a few themes with an Argentinian trio(Ruben Lopez Furst, piano;Horacio Malvichino, guitar;Baby Lopez Furst, drums)and they are great,Ed souded really good. I had those records but unfotunely they were lost while moving. I like Condon`s band very much and both Ed and Wild Bill sond terrific. Thanks
I lived and worked minutes from the original Condon's on W.3rd St.& I was a regular attende. This was a mid '50's group appearing on the Kate Smith TV program. She was a Dixie buff. She also had Phil Napoleon regularly, my clarinet teacher was Napoleon's clarinettist, Sal Pace. Any other info I can be of help please contact.......Sonny (Gene)
Hello everyone, thanks very much for your comments, sorry for not responding sooner, as I see most questions have already been answered.
The combo here plays at Eddie Condon's club in New York City, most likely around 1952, since that was the line-up Condon used at that time (according to the Edmond Hall autobiography), he played with Condon until 1955 then Joined Louis Armstrong's All Stars. This band here was only "beat" by Armstrong's All Stars from 1955-58. Can't get much better than that.
Great to see and hear! A pity that Hall's solos are so short, but they're perfectly constructed and swing so well. Davidson really grabs a hold of the group and leads, doesn't he!
a pitty that the black and white here is so distorssioned,.,,,but memorable sessions were this ones...Ive lost them all as you know,Tom,I had them all...thanks for this gift,MAX

who plays the piano?

The piano man is Mr Eugene Charles "Gene" Schroeder - another very much underrated master of the music.
