i know it's using MS-DOS but what OS did you use to boot? my guess is 98 or ME but maybe you can make a boot able floppy to boot 2000 just maybe, anyways great video and am just browsing youtube for these vids because am on my way to building one my self just as a hobbie and to test out some old stuff i had in mind so thanks for the upload i love your machine. please send me links of videos of these kind i need help planning my machine abit but thanks anyways!! cheers! from seattle!!
@Cr0z2010 The OS I am using to boot is infact MS-DOS, version 6.22. What may make you see different is all the text. Those are the various drivers loading. Like soundblaster, ethernet card, mouse, himem. It purely is software wise not younger than 1993. I may have used various newer drivers which are smaller than default so that I have more memory while running but appart from that...
get free-dos it was created when the development of ms-dos was dropped, it has full compatibility and is ms-dos but up to date, faster and even more sick-ass
@doktersbaitso I know of the fix, but searching for it this day and age, and making sense of what is required in order to implement it is quite frustrating.
@doktersbaitso Thanks, It will be good for the future reference. I think I'll cope with MS-DOS on this particular machine as I installed it some years ago and alot of things have been built upon it which I don't think I could get back right again If I started over. If I make another DOS machine (which I hopefully will) I will use what you share :)
@Blurredman Long file names, NTFS support, a mouse driver that takes a whole of 3K of RAM... CD installation, USB support, Simpler Network drive mounting, Generic Drivers, pretty much 95/98 without the GUI and much better DOS support.
Unfortunately i didn't grow up in those times so i wouldn't know. Yeah i will make some more vids one day. Of the PC itself too. I make visual basic programmes on it sometimes.. :)
visual basic is not bad, but if you want some hard-core coding action, try pascal (you can find the old borland/turbo pascal all over the net, or just use freepascal). it's a rewarding experience and surprisingly easy to learn.
yeah, this PC is too young really, most of the card dates are from 96/97.. not old enough for a real dos machine! Thats when you need backplate instead of a mobo xD
What are the specs for your PC.I think that I have a couple of similar older PC's as yours.I have a 133 Megahertz (AMD) 486 and a 486 that was upgraded with the Intel Pentium O.D. CPU at 83 Megahertz.I also have a AST Pentium 75 megahertz system that I have a lot of DOS games on (I put Windows 95 on it but it originally came with Windows 3.11 WfW.
It's acctually a pretty new system for what Windows 3.1 requires.
It is:
Pentium 1, 200Mhz (MMX)
ATI Mach64VT (2MB) - Gets 30Million colours in Win.
128MB RAM
Yamaha OPL3SAx Sound Blaster
So its pretty new really. I actually only got it because I phoned a local place enquiring about a DOS capable PC. Even then I got it free because they were clearing out. Although I did have to buy the LAN Card (3COM 3C905C) cost only a bit
At the time I got it I also put win95B on it. But then changed to 3.11
same kind of story as me really.. I inherited my dads old pc in 2006 i think and i used that until christmas 2008 where i baught a new one. the old pc was 6 years old, still have it actually so probably nearly 7 :) it was:
AMD Athlon 1700+ 1.1Ghz
512mb ram
120gb hard disk
nVidia GeForce 5200 128mb, which later got replaced with an 5500 256mb :)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ overclocked from 2.2Ghz to 2.4Ghz (Not much, but a better experience when it comes to games)
2GB DDR2 RAM
500GB Hard disk
nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512MB DDR2
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack Three ( I will 'aquire' a copy of 7, i will never get vista) :)
I am a PC gamer myself so i mainly use my PC for playing games, but i like to record from my stereo (phonograph, tuner, casette player, cd player & amp) aswel as doing homework on it of course :)
Dude INTERNET?!?! Thats OFF THE HOOK! That totally pwnz mine. BUT it would be cool if you could get internet for just DOS =). Wolfinstien and Doom, WAY better exhibition of DOS gaming! Music Player for dos!?!?! thats BADASS! KANSAS! EPIC! Awesome vid dude! Retro forever!

I'd rather use DR-DOS 6, but it's incompatable with Win.
Blurredman 1 year ago
@Blurredman
There was a fix to make DRDOS 6 compatible with windows in that time.
I used it frequently.

But I know its specs
Pentium® processor @ 70Mhz
