Sedgewick Bell's bad behavior was predictable. First he had a dad who ignored him and showed him no love. Then he had a teacher who never leveled with him and talked to him as a person. Huntert is on such a high horse.
Sedgewick had no respect for him and that's why he cheated.
What a powerful scene and for that matter a powerful movie. Everyone should watch this movie with their friends or family, the teachings for life achievements through contributions is grand.
You missed the main point of the movie. Sedgewick got no love from his father and his Huntert talked down to him and never leveled with him. Even when Sedgewick asked the teacher whether his father being a senator was the reason he wasn't called out for cheating, the teacher denied it even though it was true.
Ultimately the teacher himself had no integrity. Plus the teacher gave Sedgewick a spot in the Mr. Julius Caesar competition that belonged to Martin Blythe. No wonder Sedgewick was an ass.
It is a sad and regrettable commentary on our society today, that so few get the rather obvious point of the film. Every day, fewer and fewer kids grow up into real men and mature women. Instead, they just become yet one more regrettable waste of space.
I always hoped this film inspired someone to change their life for the better. Inspired one of the people who ordinarily would not have lived a life of virtue and character.
@MrWakethesheeple How does he not have character? He dedicates himself to teaching his students important life lessons, and tries to be involved in the students' lives.
Sedgwick, on the other hand, simply tries to lie & cheat his way to the U.S. Senate; he was no interest in educating others or contributing to society in any way. He specifically says, "I am going out there and I'm going to win that election, and you're going to see me everywhere! Then I'll worry about my contribution later."
simply appreciate it on the status which is presented to us, the lucky public, as we really should bow down and grovel for more as we are certainly not worthy.... i found it streaming online at
I'd say that the teacher is the good guy and the student is the bad guy. The student goes against everything society tells us is wrong and doesn't "give a sh**" about the consequences that come with his behavior. Ironically, with his son hearing that, his consequences caught up with him.
@MrWakethesheeple You are either an idiot, a total fucking asshole, or someone who knows better but is just looking to get a reaction from those of us who have integrity. If the first case is true, have someone with intelligence explain the film to you, difficult as is may be for you to understand. Otherwise, FUCK YOU.
The teacher lied to Sedgewick and he cheated Martin Blythe. If you didn't catch that, you didn't watch the movie carefully enough. Once you absorb these facts, it provides you with a deeper understanding of the film. It also reveals a shocking truth about educators: You can put yourself on a high horse of knowledge and ethics, but at the end of the day we are fallen creatures. Was Huntert more moral than Hiram Bell? Definitely. Do I wish they made him headmaster? Sure. Still a conman.
@ZkinandBonez There is no good or bad guy.. This film shows some interesting characters and how they evolve throughout the years. I do recommend watching this film
hey do you remember the last scene that mr william is talking with that guy..bell...at the bathroom......can you please type in what mr wiliam said?? :)
lol, it's true, I'll bet every politician that watched this movie (including business and etc) probably did their best efforts to downplay the movie's real credentials.
Does anyone know where where I can find the clip from this movie where the teachers says: Great ambition and conquest without contribution is without significance. What will your contribution be? How will history remember you? PLEASE SEND ME A PERSONAL MESSAGE
the little boy was depress what do you because he found out his dad was a lier and a cheater his whole life so what do you Expect and would you feel shock surprise and sad if you found out your own Father was a Lier and a cheat then that would make you wonder if your dad lied to you as well.

The teacher himself had no character. Why would you expect the student to grow up and become a man of character?

What exactly is the meaning behind this film? Ho's the "good guy" in this film; the teacher or the rebellious student?
ZkinandBonez 2 years ago
@ZkinandBonez i think the meaning of the film is that the world is full of people that get successful in life from bluffing.

At first glance the student is the bad guy. A more careful look and the teacher is the bad guy. No doubt.
