This is the MTV I remember. Not the Empty V now. Creative video, good music, animation.
Not the crap they have now. I'll take this show over some teen moms, obnoxious jersey people and their Snookie monster, and I'll take this over whiny spoiled brats on "My super Sweet sixteen."
Thanks for sharing -it's always great to be reminded that the idea of the 'remix' is not a new thing i.e. that it has a heritage, and that this heritage is analogue -not digital!
Wow! This is great to see this again. It was a show that inspired me what I do today. When I was growing up in Northern Ireland, miles from anywhere with nothing to do it tuned me into the rest of the world. With only 4 channels in those days it was the only thing worth watching. Apart from maybe Network 7.
I recorded some of these episodes and still have some on VHS. Maybe I'll upload?
@TheSecretChannel Thanks for the view! I still have three or four episodes to convert to digital if I can break free from working long enough to do it. I believe that Buzz was one of the single most ground-breaking video productions in recent history, It's a shame more people do not know about it. I was teaching vid production at the time and also have worked extensively in the video prod. field.
(part 3) As far as I know it's the only TV show ever to have been made that way, with the creation of the sound track coming first and then the pictures added back in afterwards. It's nice to see some of it again!
I made my first video project in 1990 by recording the episodes of BUZZ and resampling it. We made the soundtrack on an old 4 track and edited the video on a VHS system in Leeds, UK.
I may upload it and the original episodes on either/both of my channels.
Great groundbreaking and highly original programming.
Oh, that's brilliant to hear! We really got to grips with the production style of Buzz when we made the 'Appropriation' segment which I think is in segment 3 of this first episode, so it's wonderfully appropriate that you re-sampled it to make something new! Hope life is treating you well, all the best, gerard
(part 2) After that I'd make the sound design track underneath, either using bits of sampled and cut up CDs, music from Tomandandy who produced a few minutes of original music for each show and sent it over from the US, or composing music myself from scratch. Then, in the early hours of the morning, we'd mix the audio to DAT, log the start time for each of the audio samples, and send the DAT and the time log to the onliners, who would resync the pictures with our soundtrack. (ctd)
I was credited as 'Features Audio Mixer' or something similar on this whole series. What that meant was that myself and either Jon, Mark or Mark would get together at Orinoco Studios where, log the audio for all the footage for a particular segment, write it all out on little slips of paper then arrange them in the order we wanted. Then I'd sample all the appropriate bits of audio off the videotapes into a stack of Akai S1000s, and use Cubase running on an Atari ST to trigger them. (ctd)
I echo the previous comment, I've been looking for this for YEARS as well. For the longest time I couldn't even remember the title of the program. And I can't believe how cool MTV used to be. Is there any place anyone knows of to get the entire series, whether purchasing a DVD or downloading a torrent or whatever?
I have been looking for this series for years! I (club DJ/producer) remember watching the first episode with a friend (Bouncer) and remarking how far ahead of its time the show was, he looked at me and shook his head in disbelief, not getting it at all. Right then I knew BUZZ would be pulled from the schedule, they don't call it "broadcast" for nothing. A "narrowcast" doesn't pay the bills, and obviously very few of us knew what we were seeing. Thank You for sharing, and nice work!
Cool. If there's any chance you could upload a higher-res version as a torrent that would be really appreciated. For a VHS your copy looks well preserved. A higher quality torrent would allow this AAA grade material to have a well-deserved long afterlife on the net. I'm glad to hear others liked it as much as me. I had completely given up ever seeing any of it again. It frustrated me that something so good could disappear without trace from the mediasphere.
I will be posting the remaining episodes I have in the next few weeks. Please tell us more about the series... there is so little information about it available.
Very Zoo TV- which Pellington also did work for. Aside from the U2 tour, MTV aired four Zoo TV stand-alone (not U2 related, but inspired by) episodes in '97, for which I think Pellington also contributed. I hope that has survived on VHS somewhere too. But this is a total gem. Thanks a ton!
Yeah, I remember watching it after work and school ( late night ) and it just sort of disappeared. This show was sort of a forerunner of the Adbusters magazine.
Thank-you for sharing this. It was REALLY cool! I can't even find a Wikipedia page on this show. What the hell? How many episodes were produced? Did it ever air in America?
Please upload the rest of your VHS! I love this how. It was a huge influence on me and my video art.

Thank you! I have been looking for this show for 10 years and haven't been able to find a clip any where.
This show was fantastic and groundbreaking as it took one idea or concept and exploded it into a "stream of consciousness" video barrage.
If you've ever seen the docu-movie "Zeitgeist", it's opening sequence will seem familiar to those who remember "Buzz".

It was sold as a 13 episode show... as far as I can remember, only about 6 episodes aired in 1990 on MTV. It only aired once that I know of.
