Please do not allow posting of disrespectful and ignorant comments by whatchammacallit "Eosinophilia guy". I had the rare opportunity of meeting this doyen (80+ now) near Kapaleeswara Temple in 2008 and got his personal blessings. I am a student for over 15 years myself and look up to many of our doyens like sir, for my inspiration.
Jannagan has observed well. You gotta listen to sir playing to Madurai Mani Iyer's rendition of "Thathvamariya Tharamaa". Sheer silken touch magic.
The Mridangam goes back to ancient hinduism ,it is one of the oldest and original indian classical instruments ,lord bramha was the inventor of this ancient instrument and lord ganesh was ordered to play it,thus making lord ganesha the first one to play the mridanga and taals to lord shiva ,this is where taal was invented,this also proves that the source of indian classical music comes from hinduism.
@Jannagan - Good observation! Watched it carefully a couple of times. He actually uses the traditional dhin - where the middle finger stays in the air, and the tonal beat comes from the index finger, and the ring finger just provides natural support and does not muffle the nAdam. Much of his sollukattu (combination of phrases) combines Pudukkottai Dakshinamurthy Pillai's lessons and Thanjavur Vaidhyanatha Iyer's lessons - a divine combination indeed!
i see what you're saying here, he keeps switching between conventional and pazhani style while playing the nadais. He starts with the conventional and when the sammam is coming up he switches, so almost every other second. Interesting observation, he may be either showing off or some parts may be easier to play by pazhani style while others with conventional.

Some times we fall into it! should be careful in selection. My opinion, this kinda of video should be distributed free of cost to all the music students and furnished with the caption "How not to play mridangam".

@Gopis108,
Well it is used in concerts as an accompaniment to singers, other instruments etc.
It is not the same as the 'mridanga' or 'khol' that harekrishna people use

great video SOTD!
just a question....does Vellore sir use the pazhani style dhin, or the conventional. In this video it looks like he uses both....

@Jannagan,
I have not paid much attention to that. Thanks for pointing it out. We live in a hybridised age. everyone uses techniques from various schools
sonofthedestroyer 2 years ago
Very true, i too use both techniques...i guess it is because they both can be of easier use in different situations

That guy enissophilia was criticising Ramabhadran because he feels that he dosent play the mridangam in a more complex way like other masters do.
However he keeps it simple and sweet. Each to his own style i say.
